I was just perusing the various videos on this site and yours caught my attention. I'm NOT a wheelchair user but I learned so much on what extra work is needed for wheelchair users. I will be much more aware and empathetic when I travel since I really travel with 'tunnel' vision and need to be more aware and patient with the handicappable community. :-)

I wish wheelchair and other aid related things were affordable. I love my wheelchair- I have an off-road all terrain chair I love it out of everything I own it’s literally my favourite...but I really wish I could afford to make it more useable for me like I’d get E-motions if I could afford anything id pretty much just ask for them and a few adjustments to my foot rest and that would be about it.
@Wheels2Walking
@Wheels2Walking 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with the expense of these things. They’re too much and most insurance doesn’t cover them. However, I’ve heard there are grants for certain things. I believe it’s worth a look into
@MrSmitheroons
@MrSmitheroons 4 жыл бұрын
Excuse me if this is ignorant, but I know they are making less-expensive things these days with like, 3D printing. They can make a stethoscope that usually costs over $100 for about $3 or less I think with 3D printing. And it works as well as the best "gold standard" stethoscope. Someone wrote a scientific paper about it. I think there must be a way to design these things to work properly, really well, but less expensive. I think it's hard to make a profit, since so few of these chairs are made. So to make a profit, each individual one has to cost a lot. But instead, if it's more of a DIY or not-for-profit/free design, then somebody could make it cheaper, since the goal wouldn't be to make a profit, just a good design with high function/reliability for a low price. Hopefully someone can take an "open hardware" approach, to bring the price down? Bonus: with all the original design files being released, people could tweak it more easily for each person's unique specifications and needs. I guess it's just an idea. I wish I personally knew how to do this, and then I think I would do it myself.
@mobilesolutionsfl

I agree with you, Em. Anything that has "Medical" attached is uber expensive and, for the majority of us, it's unobtainable. I can't even get a decent chair. Im an amputee and the one leg I have doesn't work very well. My chair is all I have to get around and do things. Maybe I have the wrong people helping me out? IDK. I become very frustrated when I see other people with custom chairs and I'm stuck with the garbage I get.

I think it would be a lot more ethical when showing one of these products to discuss it's price. Let's be honest here, very little of the tech is new, very little of it is more complicated then any modern mountain bike yet they are priced like second hand cars. Same goes for parts. The price gouging needs to start being called out.

Wheels2Walking I really wish I had either a place to go to or someone to meet me to get the best wheelchair for me and my life. That powered trike. Also power assist add ons for manual wheelchairs needs to have more simple options. The “tank chairs” would be absolutely awesome to have here in West Virginia, it’s just way to expensive for someone with a very limited income. It’s crazy how much we take “the shortest distance between two places” for granted before being in put in a wheelchair. Spending time looking for a way to get in to buildings or having to go around areas because your wheels sink into the soft ground or you exhaust yourself trying to go 10 feet in a grassy area...

I really like this guy and his openness about his disability/abilities. I wanted to say it takes away stigma about people with his condition, but, after checking the definition of the word. I wouldn't agree with that comment. So, I'll say I'm happy he is a very open person who iswilling to inform the community about things that the average person probably doesn't know. I have had friends over the years (surprisingly.) Some of them had disabilities, but, I never treated them different, unless it was a request by them. They are just as normal as the rest of us. You would cut to the front of the line if you could get away with it. Maybe that sounded wrong. IDK, My point was they are happy, so be happy for them. Technology has came a loooong way.

I literally just got home from picking up my very first custom wheelchair when I saw this video. I would love to see a full video about picking a chair, options, accessories, etc. For most of the process I’ve felt like I had to do all of my own research to make any progress, and knowing the technical differences between two different options doesn’t mean I understand how those differences will play out in real life. And even if one option is a little better, is it better enough to justify the difference in cost/weight/whatever? I’m fine making tradeoffs to find the best tools for me and my lifestyle, but I have to know what those tradeoffs actually are first. Getting my first custom wheelchair has been really intimidating because there was so much to it and once the order form was sent out all I could do was hope everything was close enough. Unrelated, but thanks for making a point of asking about catheters for women. I don’t need them myself, but it’s really easy to overlook options that don’t directly apply to you and I’m sure the information will be super helpful for someone else down the road. Now to look at new leashes for the dog...

Its always interesting to play tetris with wheelchairs at summercamp when we have a ton of wheelchairusers and some of them don't have folding chairs. We have big cars with a lot of space, but if you need to fit 3/4 wheelchairs and some other walking aids into a car it gets difficult :) but we are all experienced tetris players now. And sometimes one wheelchair gets broken up into 2 cars (wheels in 1, rest in the other) :) its always fun

Unless the situation changes suddenly or me or the technician gets sick, I’m getting a Smart Drive fitted on my wheelchair on Monday :) I called the wheelchair center earlier this week to ask about the situation due to the Covid-19 stuff, if they still take planned appointments, or have had to scale down to emergency repairs only. They still do planned appointments as long as the technician and visitor is symptom free. But we agreed I’ll call on Monday morning again before driving from home, to check if it’s still all clear or if we have to last minute cancel. They have good routines so I’m not too worried about catching Covid-19 by going to that appointment, I’m probably more at risk when doing my weekly shopping even with having very strict routines around my hand hygiene and routines when getting back home. Hoping things will be as planned on Monday though, it would be amazing to get it fitted and be able to go outside more for some sunshine while self isolating. Outside and away from people is a safe place after all

I hope it goes as planned and I probably face the most danger at the store too 🤔 that place is gross 😂
@ReyOfLight
@ReyOfLight 4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully! I’m taking all precautions I can, and I know the wheelchair center does as well, along with having more control over who goes through their doors. Grocery stores on the other hand are outright gross in comparison because there’s just so much people (in comparison) and no control over who comes and goes and if people do actually follow regulations and recommendations regarding staying home if feeling any illness symptoms. I have hay fever so I sound like I have a cold at times this time of the year, but already told the wheelchair center that this is my totally normal at this time of the year and there’s sweet FA I can do about it other than taking my antihistamines, steroid nasal spray and inhalers daily, but I’d also know instantly if something was different and/or I start feeling sick because then it wouldn’t be the symptoms I’m used to at this time of the year. I can even tell if I’m catching a common cold during hay fever season because the cold feels totally different from just the allergies even though both tend to make my nasal cavity swell and make it difficult to breathe. They’re same but different if that makes sense 🤪 But so far so good at least, now I’m just hoping Monday will be as planned. It’s been lovely weather here for a couple of days now so I can’t wait to just get out a bit more and catch some much needed vitamin D (which is a chronic deficiency in most people up here in Scandinavia lol)

Ouch. I can imagine that you also lose a lot of energy trying to move these wheels. Since the energy would rather be absorbed downwards rather than the material resisting your push and actually moving.

@@theblackbaron4119 Fortunately, these accessories only keep increasing in variety. There are only so many people to pass them between, but a bit of price competition wouldn't hurt either way. Having to pay 600% more than the product would be actually worth, just because you need to turn a profit on 100 people instead of 10000 still doesn't justify the price premium. We aren't talking about a product of leisure, we're talking about a mobility aid.

I was 100% sure you where Brian Brushwood from the thumbnail, then saw you weren't him, then thought it again because your laugh is identical. It would make complete sense if you guys where brothers.

These guys make looking disabled so cool that I was finding myself wishing I had an excuse to use wheelchairs with suspension systems and snow plows built in.

This is so cool. I live in Canada and Germany. I'm a Walker but have seen offroad chairs, its amazing. Mobility is so important. It makes me sad and angry when someone can't do what they love because of the price. Way to go, push your limits to the max! We live just once.
