quick note to anyone else having the calf strap problem: if you don't have the money to get it sorted out properly a good bodge is to get some of that sticky velcro and put it on both your chair and the strap, so it will stay in the right place!

Well let's start with the mindset... Today.. so let's start by standing up.. ok you up? Now sit back down. Now stay there. And stay there. Stay seated for the rest of the day. Then without standing up, do everything you have to do to get ready for bed tonight. Drag yourself into bed, then in the morning drag yourself back into a chair. And stay seated for the rest of that day too. Then just continue to stay seated until the end of your life... AND VOILA! YOU HAVE THE MINDSET!

I'm currently using a wheelchair because of spinal stenosis. The thing you mentioned about always feeling the need to scoot back on the seat. I do that all the time. It's like the seat is too short from front to back. I had a chair made for me and even though I put in the order that particular problem it wasn't addressed.. Now I don't think anything can be done about it. I got my chair through Medicare so I doubt if I can get another one. Also the leg rest are to short and push my leg up into my hip Which is very painful. I'm so thankful you posted this information. 😊

I love pink but if I were ever in this position (I’m no I just find this stuff fascinating) I’d go for dark blue, a little colour and blue goes with just about any other colour. Plus I have learned you can get rim covers and wheel spoke covers so I’d like have like 10 different sets LOL. I really want to see what the ones with donuts on them look like btw! Reminds me of the Simpsons.

I’m currently in the process of getting a wheelchair because I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and I can no longer walk any long periods. This is super helpful. I grew up among wheelies and that knowledge pays off now (besides skipping months of rehab), I had full say in my current wheels ordering and other than the cushion not being waterproof it's perfect One thing that I can recommend, if you're extremely active, give your wheels a beating (my wheels where I go not the other way around like most), get a boxframe, some companies give that option, it makes them more sturdy and soft roll wheels reduce the amount of vibration that you get from hard casters, also think of their size, the smaller they are the quicker they get caught in cracks
@Gdesign959
@Gdesign959 5 жыл бұрын
I would agree with everything you said except the box frame. These days the frames are insanely stiff so no boxing is needed. My non boxed frame will actually 3 wheel if the floor is not flat because there's no flex at all. No sense in adding weight and having it take up more room in your car if you transfer your chair into the back seat.
@davidbrouwers7309
@davidbrouwers7309 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gdesign959 it actually depends on the manufacturer and how much abuse the wheels take and it doesn't really add much weight overal (my handbike connector weights more than the few extra bars) but I use my wheels more than atleast 90% here, go where many of you stop (like off road areas without offroad tires, freewheel etc) so yeah, some of us need a boxframe and all of my wheels are always on the floor unless I hit a bumb, curb or purposefully lift them despite the terrain so sounds like your wheels are off a bit It's why wheelchairs are custom items
@Gdesign959
@Gdesign959 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidbrouwers7309 What I am saying is that if the floor is not perfectly flat my non boxed chair is so stiff that it will actually 3 wheel. My boxed chair from ten years ago would never do that because even though it was boxed it still flexed more than the modern non boxed titanium chairs.

I just wanted to share that I coach FLL Jr. Teams (a robotics team for kids in grades k-3) and the emphasis on accessibility is awesome. This year's game is called Boomtown Build. The students build a building that is strong, sustainable, and accessable. One team has a tree house restaurant with an elevator. Another built an apartment with an automatic door, smooth flooring, and an elevator to a rooftop garden that has a smooth path. I am pretty proud of what they have built. And I am thankful for to FIRST for emphasizing accessablity in it's curriculum.

After spending 10years in a standard (push your mum around in) wheelchair i finally found out i should have been in an “active user chair”!! It has come to late to stave off the damage that has been done but at least i’m on the waiting list (18months in the UK!!) My hope of keeping enough mobility in my left leg to get around the very small bungalow we live in using 2 sticks has gone out of the window. Thanks for your unbelievably helpful channel and advice, now i know i can say NO that won’t work. Happy wheeling to ya.😊👍

Nice chair. My first chair was a TiLite as was my second and the scripting process was quite extensive. Had a few changes in the second chair and a couple of after market mods. Had to deal with TiLite through a local agent (I’m in New Zealand) so the opportunity to have much factory modding was reduced. Then we had the pandemic years around the time I needed a new chair so what with the delays on imported stuff, I went local. They did such a good job, everything built on site, absolutely custom fit. Couple of things to note - got rid of the leg strap for same reasons you pointed out, it slid up or down, so ended up with a fixed padded crossbar at the right height which stopped my feet curling back and off the back end of the footplate. Thought carefully about using carbon fibre but I’ve seen it shatter and last thing I want is sharp shards where my hands go. Stuck with aluminium for the clothing guards, and lately ABS. We’ll see how that goes. Modded flip up footplate that rests on top of the front wheel fenders, means it doesn’t need a big hinge at the back, but it’s rock solid and will take my weight (over 100kg). Chair is heavy duty titanium. Had the slip forward problem but always considered that a problem with the cushion rather than chair design. I’m using Roho cushions, and the Spirit cushion has a rubberised frame and front (air for all the pressure point areas) which holds you in place quite nicely. I’ll never go back to an off the shelf model, the local fabricators are total pros at what they’re building and ongoing support is excellent. EDIT forgot to say, when going completely custom, bite the bullet and do away with adjustable parts. The driving philosophy we went with was the less moving parts the better, the less complicated anything was, the better. Fixed frame, about the only moving parts are the footplate (an indulgence), the seat back which folds forward to reduce the size for pulling into the car etc, the brakes and the wheels themselves. No squeaks or creaks - magic.

Wow, awesome video man! Another benefit of Hands on Concepts is that they had other wheelchairs that you could look at and sit in to see what you liked. They make beautiful chairs! I really want one - I'm hoping my next chair is from HOC. I wish I had this video when I bought my first one. I found the abled salesperson was not the most helpful and I didn't get the chair I wanted. I found that they made assumptions about how I live my life and it was way off. I had the same issue, they gave me a wider seat than I wanted (and I insisted on smaller than they had suggested). I've lost some weight since getting a proper chair (I was in a hospital chair for over a year) because I'm able to hike and be way more active. My chair is also better suited for someone who was an indoor user, so I've spent a lot of money upgrading various components so I can get out and do the things I love, which involves a fair bit of off-road stuff. Thankfully I found a local company that specializes in wheelchairs and is run by people in wheelchairs, rather than the large medical supplier I bought the chair from. If anyone is in the Toronto, Canada area, check out Bespoke 49, they are similar to HOC and a real lifesaver when it comes to getting the chair you want.

Hard to describe how much better this is. Same story about width as well. This chair is 50mm narrower which is what my first chair should have been. Buy from a person in a chair so they understand. Being able to walk is one thing; being able to walk with comfort without exhaustion and not being able to complete a normal day because of it IS another concept! However some health professional don't seem to gather this concept. As far as they are concerned a handicaped person should be suffering some... Yet, this time has passed! Able bodied people are seeking all kinds of comforts, so should the handicaped persons be allowed the same, no questions asked.

As a Spina Bifida T-11, I've spent every waking hour in a wheelchair since the age most people learn to walk; it was only with my current chair that I've felt like it was customized to my liking/needs, rather than just the most common needs for customers with Spina Bifida. Having been a wheelchair user since most people learn to walk, and I never noticed that wheelchair companies often make wheelchairs wider than necessary. In fact, in thirty-two years of consistent wheelchair use, the only chair I've had that hasn't been unnecessarily wide is the wheelchair I'm currently in. Being able to tell wheelchair companies NOT to make the chair so wide would've saved my parent's house from so much damage from misjudged turns over the years.

I have been putting off having a wheel chair in the last 18 months. Now I cannot walk round the house without severe pain, so this weekend I plucked up the courage I went to Aspire2Mobility in Oakham, Rutland. I was so scared as I had never been in one before. I wanted an active wheelchair rather than electric to help me burn some calories, and be stronger. Krystal was fantastic and I was able to use many different types of wheelchair. I couldn’t believe how much goes into a wheelchair, and the many different extras. Which all add up. I’ve now got to wait 8-10 weeks for my chair. I can’t wait. I can be back to being independent again. It’s been so long

Every single time I look at another active wheelchair I find new appreciation for how perfect my Meyra XR 1.911 is. Every single one of the other ones has at least 2 faults mine doesn't have. When something is adjustable on your wheelchair, it doesn't necessarily mean it's built that way so more people can use the same component so it's easier to mass manufacture, it also automatically means that you can make changes without extra cost to conform with your changing habits. An angle and depth adjustable footrest is such a feature, so is an adjustable rear wheel, for when you need to take those curbs with a 30 LBS backpack on the back of your chair while you're traveling. Chairs that lack this kind of versatility and can therefore be used only one certain way don't appeal to me at all.

@Wheels2Walking

You’ll have to call and talk to them. The don’t take insurance for the frame but I think they can help you to get insurance to pay for wheels, backrest, cushion. Every other place I’ve got a chair from will pay for frame but not accessories. I still say reach out to them and see what experience they have.

Excellent video!! I’ll likely rewatch in a few weeks when I order a chair. I’ve been in three chairs that I’ve slowly realized are not fit for me. I’m so frustrated with mine right now. I’m ready for a change but am scared since it’s a huge purchase that I’m stuck with everyday. It’s a big deal. I can probably google it but do you know if I can get those brakes on any chair? I absolutely love them. I have thumb busters but have never had that issue with hitting them before. Or at least I don’t think I have. I’m probably going to realize it now. Haha.

Hi, dear, now I got my first fit - to - me - chair! I couldn't create it from first frame - piece on fit to me. But I watched tons of vids about the new ones, I wrote a list what I need, what I want, and after watching this vid and that of wheelsnoheals L so much more knew what I have to have a sight of. What is important, what's estethic and what I really like. I wanted a woam! red one but noticed every bang would be seen and would make it ugly. Then I saw the SunriseMedical EasyLife SA, foldable (I haven't much power nor arm craft nor power at all.). It fits to my M 25 electrified wheels! Color: black with some red accessories like caster - holder and around the back there goes a tiny small red line, all around! Then my rim covers wich are two at each side to make them bigger firmed with velcro which fits best: the inner ones are black, the outers are red! The seat is 2 and 1/2 inch longer, the seat is 2 inches lower, no arm rests any more, that let my arms make impossible bad moves to push my wheels!Now my shoulders and my back don't hurt that much! My feet: I need s. th. that I can highten and lower up and down my legs and knees cause they both hurt and swell, they swell much, that hurts for days and nigths!here I can position them to the same hight as my seat is! So cool! 5" casters, but I want some with lights, I must search, don't know where to get them. It's so much more active! But I must learn to come clear with the way it wants to go up with the casters!!! I've got 2 security - roles behind, at each side under the seat close to the street one, 7 cm above.I easily can get curbs now, can drive better, faster, the streets are more plane to me, it holds the line. Do you know what I mean? It's 4 kg lighter than the first! i bought handles which can be done higher or lower, for if I go behind the wheels (to transport soup or so I do) or to trai inside of our house between kitchen and livingroom. I want them low to fold all and put it in my car. Now it fits all in all! I'm only sad that I couldn't get handles up and down AND to lay down the back when I fold it. We both don't know why that can”t be together! My shop chef doesn't know and I definitively don't. But all in all it's great! I'm happy! Before I could sit about 2,5 hrs and then had to lay down for 6 or more hours, now 5 to 6 are no problem in sitting! Thank you so much! Lots of the things I had to change are known by me cause I watched your vids - and that of wheelsnoheels. You both got it for me! Thank you so much! Be blessed!

I keep telling people to have as little as possible on their wheelchairs due to the weight every accessory adds. I have a Panthera U3 chair and haven’t had anti-tippers for over 6 years now, but on my current chair I’ve had since last year, I do have push handles because they come as standard (so does the anti-tippers but I had them removed) and my backrest is very low these days (30cm or about 12”) so the push handles is more for my sake when I have to walk a little with my chair or take it up or down stairs as the push handles means I can walk with straight back instead of having to bend down to reach the bar across the backrest. But the push handles of the 3rd generation Panthera chairs really weighs nothing, they’re truly super light compared to the old push handles and they’re also very easy to use and adjust. One thing I really love about my chair is the side guards, they’ve got hard plastic on the sides and then just over the wheels they have semi rigid rubber that you can sit on pretty comfortably if doing the sit on the wheel trick to reach, or while transferring, they’re also great for when you need to slow down as you can push them down onto the tires while also holding the push rims, it’s especially useful if you have Surge push rims (which are AWESOME) or some other super grip rims that risk burning your hands off while slowing down if not wearing gloves

I use a wheelchair ambulatorily! I have a Mohawk (the hairstyle lmao) and I wear mainly black and gold, I covered my chair in motivational stickers so it’s fun to look at (you know, if they’re gonna stare, give them something to stare at). I even designed a disclaimer sticker explaining why I use the chair even if my legs can move. It’s made to be fun for little kids to learn about :) keep on rolling, homies!

My biggest worry now is that I'm losing weight intentionally and safely, so i didn't know they'd pressure me into a bigger chair. Also, gunna ask and see if i can get those locks because on the chair i have it's push to lock and i have fucked up my thumbs plenty of times

With my last chair order, I went through this entire measurement process for a new TiLite chair and we had what I would have considered a perfect chair sized out for me. The problem arose when the guy who had all my paperwork with everything about my chair quit working for the company on bad terms and refused to return any of the papers he had, so the company tried to hide it from me and sent me a standard 16X16 chair with zero measurement modifications. Needless to say, it was way too small and by the time a new one came in, I was in the hospital from a pressure wound and it was a long stay, so I got stuck with a chair that was not set up for me at all other than the seat width and depth. I have a high injury level, (T3-T5) so you are very correct about the bucket being used for balance and the back of mine is way to straight-up for me and it feels like I'm always being pushed forward. Best chair I've ever had, but also the most uncomfortable chair I've ever had and I've been in a chair for 33 years. I've since had to move to a power chair at home and now can't get another manual chair that fits me. I still have to use the uncomfortable chair when I go out because I don't have a way to transport my huge power chair.

Thanks for making this video! I'm right at the beginning of finding a wheelchair that works for me and am still waiting for an assessment. I've heard a lot of negative reports about people getting a chair that doesn't suit their lifestyle or needs and so I really appreciate having some idea of what to ask them to consider in an assessment, especially since I'm a new wheelchair user. One thing that I've been considering is whether having footrests that split and fold to the sides will make it easier to get in and out of a chair. As somebody who has some ambulatory ability do you find that your fixed footplate gets in the way at all when you transfer in and out? What are the advantages of a fixed footplate/rest for you?

Looks amazing sadly I don't have as much ability as yourself. But when you said don't get a bright wheelchair my heart kind of sank. My lean green eco machine is at the hospital, I can't change the colour now. I don't regret it. But I can understand the idea people will stare more. To be honest I see soo many chairs here it doesn't bother me and generally as long as I wear a smile noone cares so far (I've been renting chairs to get used to the effort it needs). My chair is definitely going to be chunky that's how it's gonna be for me. I do wish I could go thinner but I need it to somewhat contain my flails, I need the handles for help etc. They really wanted me to go straight to electric but I'm stubborn. I do now need to find e-motion wheels. Which cost half of my entire income for a year between hubby and I. But that's not a huge rush just something i know I need relatively soon to allow me to actual go any kind of distance. Ilive in Scotland and everywhere is hills. I can go down fine but up just ain't happening even with help
