I came there once years ago but I didn't have enough cash to get inside. They let me look around outside but they said if I was 65 I could get in but I was only 64 then so I never got in. Tim came out and talked to me though. I was traveling and got to my bank the next day but never made it back there. A dollar short a day late and a month early. Now I have been paralyzed and can't walk anymore. I wish I could go back in time to Wheels thru time. I would have loved to see inside. I watch the shows and I can walk again

Me and my son are making the ride to the museum this Saturday. His whole life as a toddler and little boy (he'll be 11 next month) we would always go to the Harley Dealer and he would sit on the bikes with me and we would pretend we were on a ride somewhere. Well last July I made a lifelong dream come true and i got a Harley. Its an 03 wide glide. We absolutely love riding together and when I told him about wheels through time he said dad we gotta go. It's only about a 2 hr ride from us. we are both super excited about it.

Dale, we had the pleasure of meeting last fall at the swap meet in Davenport, Iowa. Years back before I realized the joy in having an all original motorcycle, I built a 45 from scratch. I bought a basket 1968 engine from the St. Paul, MN motorcycle escort service for $80. I then proceeded to build a complete two wheel 45 bike. I am sure parts are from many years but it is probably the only two wheel 1968 45 cu in motorcycle out there. And you know why. That being said, maybe it's time you built a 45 cu in bike for the yearly give away. Hear me out. I think half your viewers/visitots are old geezers (like me), and kick starting a knuck or pan gets tougher as we age. A 45 on the other hand is way easy and while they are not good for rode trips, they are beautiful for around town (when it's not to hot out). So please think about it. Maybe you could even find the fan I seen on a MN state trooper bike that mounted to cool the cyclinder off.

That shop reminds me of the shop I worked for when I graduated high school in 1983. The shop was in downtown Los Angeles and we did automobile electrical and air conditioning as well as being the only Westcoast distributor and authorized installer of Federal Signal lighting which make emergency light bars and all equipment for police, fire, ambulances. So yes we built police cars and installed sirens and spotlights and lightbars also. The shop was called Highway Safety Equipment Company and it had been in business since 1924 in the same building. Two story with the upstairs having an office, a studio apartment and parts storage. The old owner paid the new owner rent to use the upstairs office where he and his buddies have been playing a weekly poker game for over 50 years. The shop had old bay doors on each end of the building for drive through service and there were two bays off the left side. The shop counter was below the second floor and the 6 rows of shelving along with the 4 rows of shelving upstairs and the shelving on the shop walls had automotive electrical parts that had been there since the 1920s and '30s and '40' and so on. When things were slow I would just start opening boxes to see what was inside and the things I would find were amazing. Factory parts for Cadillacs from the 1930s and newer. Taillights and Headlamps housings and trims, aftermarket brake and turn signal switch assemblies for 6 volt cars that didn't come with lights from the factory, old police sirens and lights, air horns, Appleton spotlights with and without mirrors in the head, air conditioning units self contained that bolted on under the dash for cars without AC from the 1950s. If you needed a abturn signal stalk from some old car because the original broke, we had boxes full of turn signal stalks/arms. We had motors for convertible tops and motors for power windows and headlamp doors, vacuum motors for headlamp doors and heater doors. It was a treasure trove of rare parts and stuff that you never heard of. I found a box of Ford factory touch up paints from the 1930s all the factory colors. That's what I see you guys doing in your shop. You know you have a spot where certain parts will be and you have drawers and shelves of fasteners and screws and nuts and bolts and springs and they've been collected since the 1920s. Spend a few minutes searching and you will find what you need. It was an amazing shop. A great place to work and learn how to work on cars and specialists in electrical and air conditioning as well as getting to build emergency vehicles for cities and universities and the Red Cross and ambulance companies.

Man....thats kool nothing like a little time travelin
@13_13k
@13_13k Ай бұрын
@davewallace8219 --- it really was like time traveling. At that time in the mid 1980s('83-'86) when I worked there, downtown L.A. was a terrible place, crime, bums dying in front of the shop on the sidewalk, four stores down to the corner was a bar and the neighborhood was mostly people from El Salvador, the bar must have been nuts. It wasn't open during the day and usually at least one or two days a week as the guys I worked with we'd walk to the burger place across the street from the bar and at the entrance of the bar the sidewalk would have blood all over it from the night before. But it was all old shops around there that had been there for decades and we even wore the old school blue button up lab coats as our work uniform just like that shop always had worn since its original days. We were "automotive technicians". When we opened in the morning there'd be people waiting to be the first we didn't make appointments, and as a customer would drive in the shop the four of us, the owner who was 36 yrs old at that time, his youngest brother who was 23 yrs old another guy who was just 21 and I was 18 yrs old, the owner would say who is going to help that customer and one of us would walk out from behind the counter and talk to the customer and find out what the problem was their car was having and we had a sign on the wall that said Free Estimates Are Now $10.00. People thought it was a joke, but we'd have to figure out what was needed to fix the problem, turn signal didn't work or an electric window didn't work or their AC wasn't blowing cold or it could be a cop car or ambulance that the light bar wasn't working or whatever. Some customers had been coming in since the 1940s or older. Men who were in their 80s and 90s year old in their old cars and we'd get the young drug dealers in their lowered Cadillacs and their Porsches and hot rods. Customers always looked a little concerned that we were all so young until we fixed their problem that no other shop could fix, even dealerships would bring cars to us that they couldn't figure out the problem. We'd get burn jobs that the whole car needed all new wiring and old cars to be upgraded from 6 volt to 12 volt. We didn't have computers or diagnostic tools other than a test light to check for 12 volts and we did finally get a freon sniffer to search for air conditioning leaks. We used to use an old tin cup with a bar of soap and a little water and a paint brush to put soapy water on the ac fittings and hoses to look for bubbles being made by leaking freon. Hahahaha old school.

I have been following You and the museum for a long time. I appreciate what you do to preserve the past. My Dad was a tt flat track racer. He was a factory racer for Harley and Indian based out of Dothan, Alabama Dealer. When i was a child we still had a TT 450 Indian, part's were scarce and once the few nos parts were gone it sat, he slowly parted out most of it. I even put the front end and exhaust pipes to put on my 160 Honda Dream and Suzuki cafe with fiberglass tank, fenders and frame. People in our area used to bring Hartley's would being them in boxes and he would rebuild them from scratch. He even modified the magneto from an F104 airplane for a Harley on one.😂. Man, that's something I really like about you.. For a lot of people their mantra is "if it ain't broke don't fix it!" and they'll just leave it as it is and start it and ride it and end up breaking something.. But you want to know what you have and make sure there's nothing broken or about to get broken before starting it. That's much more my style, like how I pulled apart my great uncle's 1961 Ruger 22 before really shooting it so I could make sure it was fully cleaned and properly lubed before I put a bunch of rounds through it.. which absolutely pissed my father off when I was struggling to put it back together. (turns out their recoil spring is a complete pain to set right.. when we did get it back together we ended up setting it tighter than it was and the thing actually kicks even just being a 22LR.. oh well I guess, better practice for a bigger pistol) I'm definitely one of those people that can't leave "well enough" alone, I want to know everything about whatever it is that I have.. though part of that is probably my autism. If only I didn't live in California and lived anywhere near you I'd probably be there hanging out all the time and taking you up on the bead blasting offer and maybe even do some welding/brazing for you if you needed it.

To me, it would be honor just to touch a piece of history like that bike. If it could talk, imagine the stories it had. I dont own any old bikes, but when people ask me why i ride a harley? I tell them im riding history. To me, it's all of our history. Thank you for posting these videos.

I discovered this again and have now subscribed. And am not into Harleys or bikes really. They need 4 wheels! Though my brother runs the workshop in a major dealer and my father rode Triumphs and Ariels before I was born 70 years ago. But I like the presentation and the knowledge of the show.

Got a basket case WLA in 87,i was 17.it came with hi comp aluminum heads, stamped with letter 6, a m88 linkert carb,foot clutch, suicide shift with reverse,it had an earlier cast beam Springer.all of the WLAs were military,as the A was dropped after the war the 47 WL i currently own is a civilian model, they were utilitarian so even the 2 wheelers had reverse and side hack mounts on frame. I believe the 45 motor holds the record for longest production motorcycle engine.

Why did I never think to see if y'all had a YT channel? I've been missing out! Those old tires that went on the 120 year old bike looked like United States Tire Company Chain Treads. I can't believe thise were still pliable enough to go on those rims.

Truett & Osborne is in Wichita, not Topeka. I've been fetching parts from there for other Bikers for 50 years. It's about 40 miles from where I live in Winfield, KS. I say "fetching for others" because I go to Wichita a lot, and I never had a Harley for myself until recently. Now I go there for myself to get parts and advice on rebuilding the 73 Servi--car I have now.

Your excitement is infectious and i can see your dad Dales enthusiasm and excitement around bikes in you. I also love the bikes made between 1920s and 1960s especially Harleys, indians BSA rigid A7 twins of 1949 and the original Triumph tiger 100 made in 19e9 with the very special bronze head, yes believe it or not they are so rare and were when they first made the speed twin in 1938 I do believe. My dad had one and had a sidecar on it. I wish he had kept it in the family but those times in the early 60s were very grey before the Beatles with many slums, flattened streets still from WW2. I remember Fred Warrs, the main dealer for Harley Davidson in Europe. It was very near to where i was born in East Fulham and I remember seeing old Harleys being ridden along the Kings Rd Chelsea when you could buy a house there for $10 k usd. Now its real estate gold with places now costing several million up. It would be great to get some old photos of Warrs with the bikes of yesteryear. What a beautiful red that 1951 Harley was painted in. I love these so much but only have a plastic model of one from america thats my favourite ornament and is over 35 years old.
