Riding at High Altitude - Bicycle Touring Central Asia | Cycling the World
There are some killer 4000m+ climbs ahead and fierce headwinds make our progress even tougher. We team up with Karl, a 70 year old German/Aussie solo cyclist, to tackle this notorious difficult stretch of the Pamir Highway. The high altitude tests us to our limits, the views are otherworldly and we form a very special friendship with our highly inspiring new ally...

Great job well done for the high passes. Extra respect for Karl. It's super tough to do Pamir Highway for younger folks. Imagine doing this when you're at 70. Just a piece of interesting story. We met a French guy in Murghab. We later found out he rode from Murghab to Sary Tash in one day on Strava. Absolutely have no idea how he did that. Super human.
@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander 4 жыл бұрын
Karl is the man! So incredibly inspiring. If totally re-framed my 70 year old picture and hope to still be as active as he is 💪🏼 In one day! Wow, that is crazy... I think we had to camp 3 times and did fairly well on the road. Did he pack a lot as well?
@spektrumB
@spektrumB 4 жыл бұрын
@@WheelstoWander That French guy has a bikepacking set up. He wasn't carrying as much as we did. But still insane to cover this distance in one day, given the nasty headwind, really bad roads and three 4000+m high mountain passes. It also took us four days to reach Sary Tash. I think we camped at the same abandoned house as you did. The place is 500m downhill after one of the high passes, 27km after Karakul. It was -10C after sunset. All the water bottles were frozen solid the next morning. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
@WheelstoWander

Insane is the word! I could (would..) never do that! That's the one, 500m after the high pass from Karakul (nasty incline there ;.) Lucky for us it didn't freeze... Great to be out of that nasty wind though! Thanks! Also a Merry Christmas and a Bike-tastic 2020 🎄

The Akbaital pass is about 80Km after Murghab, and another 50Km before Karakul. Just before the steep climb for the Akbaital pass. There is a house with a family living there(@ 3:55 you see a house). It's probably at 4450m altitude. When I read other older cycling journals, that family just had a baby boy. When I cycling there in 2017. The baby boy has already grown up to a teenager. I guess the herder @ 4:54 is that boy. Can't imagine what life is like living in such remote place.

Hi Graham, good question. The thought did cross our mind and although we both would like to experience the feeling of solitude & self reliance on a shorter solo trip, we both prefer cycling together on a world tour. In addition to that, I (Maudi) think I don't dare to cycle alone in certain parts of the world.

Fabulous videos, leave me satisfied and yet wanting more. Patience is rewarded. Genuine people. Tough riding. I wonder how well your panniers are doing. I am about to replace my 25-year-old beat-up Ortliebs with some new ones; wondering about the different fabrics and how well they will put up with a 5-year RTW bike ride. The two of you are real and wonderful, inspiring.
@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander 4 жыл бұрын
Hi D vM! Hey thanks, that is very cool to hear! The panniers had their share of wear. Maudi buckled the clips incorrect making some break so we had buckles replaced. She also has the Plus version, and the material is holding up great for her. I (Eric) am more clumsy ;.) So my stronger Frontrollers Classics have some holes due to a dumb action riding into a ditch. The Plus fabric should work great in the long run with a bit more careful handeling I would say, it is definitely not as tough as the Classic. A tip would be a small T15 wrench. The new (hook) system works great but the screws slowly come loose after some months and we lost a couple of them already. Especially offroad where there is more vibration. Also a small tube of rubbercement/seamgrip works great for fixing holes. Are you doing a 5 year RTW tour I gather? Thanks again and all the best! Merry Christmas 🎄

Thanks 😊 We use Premiere by Adobe. There are other good programs around and a lot of people use Final Cut Pro from Apple with amazing results. Do you do or want to edit yourself?

@@WheelstoWander Hi there. Thanks for the info. In answer to your earlier question, I'm not currently on a round-the-world tour. I am, however, now planning and preparing for such a ride that will begin in about 5-6 years, when I retire. My plan is to travel for about 5 years, possibly beyond. I have 25 years extended touring experience behind me, and for now I go on 2-month "practice" rides to ready myself for the RTW one. As for creating video, I am trained and skilled in visual arts which helps when it comes to photography and video. I do expect to take a Premiere subscription as I do use Photoshop and Lightroom, but about to leap from PC to Apple so I may wait to see what Final Cut Pro is like. Again, nice to know what program you're using. Best wishes.

Yeah, i did some mountain biking in Colorado once, and the 6,000ft to 10,000 ft elevation kicked my ass. But you two are on loaded touring bikes at much higher altitudes. Must have been brutal. That meal although expensive, looked delicious tho. And I bet worth every penny after such a grueling ride. What bikes are you riding by the way? Are those 26” wheels? I currently ride 29” wheels but was told 26” is better for remote places since it’s a more universal size. Anyway, love your vids. Very cinematic & beautifully shot.
@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander 4 жыл бұрын
In one of our earlier Tajik videos (Toughest Bicycle Ride) we got hit real hard by the altitude because there was so much elevation gain in a short time. About the time in this video we were much better acclimatised and already did a 4000+ pass before stretch. Still it was super tough going!! The food was wonderful, man could we use it ;.) We forgot to ask the price before hand and she kind of upped the numbers we later came to know from others. 26" is still the most universal wheel size as far is I know. Of course there are no bike shops out there, but we saw plenty MTB's. You could bargain for a wheel or perhaps end up buying a whole bike and only take the wheel. So possibilities for sure. That said, we also saw quit some people riding 28" (Karl for one) and 29"ers. Karl did have I believe 32mm tyres that gave him trouble sinking into the gravel. A nice 50mm+ tyre is a good thing to have in those conditions. Thanks & Happy Holidays 🎄

Yes well actually we did... when you gotta go you gotta go! We always search for a private spot, or wonder of far enough in an open space that it's difficult to see what's happening. It's not always easy, we obviously don't want to do it on private property / agricultural land.

@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander 4 жыл бұрын
We came from Uzbekistan and gradually climbed in elevation (almost perfect... aside from a little 3200m+ pass ;.) People also do this route in reverse and start in Kyrgyzstan. From there the elevation gains are much more rapid and we hear people struggle with that. The first 1500m shouldn't give much problems and then a steady gain of about 300m a day would be ideal but that all depends on the route/profile and the days to do it in.

Hi Jason, thanks for your comment. We don't mind paying a tourist price and we're not averse in giving away money to people in need. But this lady made up a price on the spot, the next people paid less than half the amount for the same dish, only because they asked about the total costs upfront. You're right it's a third world country but there's definitely something like charging way out of proportion, this was an amount we could have paid for lunch in the Netherlands.
