As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult this is a huge problem for me. It makes me an overthinking perfectionist that's constantly exhausted but never relaxed, and I can't plan out decisions that require several steps. So I reach that decision paralysis constantly. If anyone here feel like they are struggling more with life than they should but can't put their finger on why/is constantly stressed and depressed and can't put their finger on why/knows someone who this applies to - read up on ADHD. A lot of people think they know what it is when they actually don't. It's hugely underdiagnosed in adults, especially women. It's also not an excuse for laziness, it's a severe lack of dopamine. The classic signs are not sticking to a budget, always being late, lacking structure, making plans to get your life in order and then not following the plan, make a new plan and still not sticking to it, not managing to eat regularly when left on your own, only being able to focus on things that interest you, bad memory, being labeled an air-head, emotions being really strong, feeling restless and frustrated. A lot of people with ADHD did fine in school, so that's not a good indicator in itself. Edit: ADHD is one of the most succesfully medicated psychiatric diagnoses there is. If you think you may have it, talk to your doctor. Another tell tale sign is if you went out to party and tried some speed but felt more relaxed than energetic. People with ADHD react differently to this drug than other people.

A friend of mine in college told me about how she’d experimented with a little coke, and ended up sitting down and doing her entire semester’s worth of PE homework. I was like, “yeah, you’ve got ADHD, go get tested.” Having been through the process myself I took her to the school psychologist (for someone with undiagnosed/unmedicated ADHD making/keeping appointments is way extra super hard) and wouldn’t ya know it, ADHD aaaallll up in them brains.

Reducing decisions was one of the few useful things I learned in college. Had a quirky professor who told us that he struggled every day with his wardrobe. He would choose the color of his slacks and then have to match socks, shoes and belt...then a shirt and a tie. It would take 10-15 minutes daily. He switched to wearing khaki slacks every day with black shoes/socks/belt. He bought a few different shirt colors that would match any tie he chose. The lesson was to identify situations where you can remove decisions or at least minimize them. It works too.

Between my ADHD and creativity, my mind tends to explode into a theoretically infinite amount of possibilities and that's where my "decision paralysis" comes into play. I usually do better by forcing the decision into something binary and (if I need to) slowly expand from there. Like some decisions end up being something along the lines of, "either I do it, or I won't" and then figuring out what will happen if I do it...or if I don't do it...then jumping off from there. Otherwise I'll get stuck in the dreaded anxiety-ridden-land-of-making-lists-of-lists-on-post-its because the possibilities are just sooooo endless, riiiiight? -____- Bwaaaaah. -ADHDerailed

To help myself, I took notes of Craig's list, but I thought I'd also put it here. How to Stop Procrastinating by Reducing Decision Fatigue: 1. Write down goals and priorities 2. Reduce or remove small decisions 3. Identify why you're not deciding 4. Widen your options Hot tip: Ask yourself "What would I do if neither option were possible" 5. Reality test your assumptions Pro hack 1: Research Pro hack 2: Experiment 5.2.1. Act as if you made the decision 5.2.2. Shadow someone 5.2.3. Build a prototype 5.2.4. Compare to your goals and priorities 5.2.5. Play devil's advocate 5.2.6. The 10/10/10 rule 5.2.7. Be an objective observer of yourself 6. Set a time limit 6.1. As someone that also has perfectionism and an inability to make decisions, I can say mine is from my depression and lack of self confidence. I NEED everything I do to be done the right way, but I don't trust myself to do it. So how can you make decisions when you can't trust you're making the best one possible? Eventually all of this leads to severe anxiety which just makes it all so much more fun. It's an incredibly frustrating, disheartening, downward spiral that never seems to get any better. So many wasted opportunities and years down the drain.

Just have to say (write), the way you present your sponsor is genius. Seen so many sponsored videos from other creators lately, as soon as they start talking about it I just skip past and it's easy to tell when they are done as they just use the same advert reel on just about every channel. With you, it was entertaining to watch the whole thing, it wasn't just a reel with voiceover, it was actual content (even if the subject was an advert). So bravo to that!

I have a friend of mine that carries a small pouch with dice in it. Whenever he needs to make a decision, he writes down the options in a numbered list and uses either a coin flip or dice roll to decide. The decision is final and absolute - so he never has to second guess anything. I hope this helps someone!

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I struggle with ADD & anxiety so too many decisions actually impair my ability to be a normal human and do normal human things!!! The "prioritising choices" section really gave me some perspective and made so much sense!!! People around me usually roast me for choosing the same menu item at restaurants or exclusively going to only one coffee shop and getting the same drink every time or having a monochrome wardrobe so literally any combination of clothes will match. My decision priorities are elsewhere! Wowee it feels so good to see you vocalising this!
@gretaherrig45814 жыл бұрын
This has been so helpful! I sat down with a journal and this video and followed step by step. It helped clear my head! I also found that intuition played a role in looking at my options on paper, despite feeling uncomfortable or scared I felt like I knew the right choice. I’m also codependent, and I find that if I don’t streamline or check in about my choices I’ll drive myself nuts overthinking it (and then never doing much about it lol). Thank you so much! That book looks great, I’ll have to pick it up!

Make a decision and make it right. In other words, once a decision is made it’s not the end. If the decision wasn’t perfect you can still tweak it to make the decision the right decision. Example: you buy a house but it doesn’t have the media room you wanted. You can build on or turn an extra bedroom into the media room. Now to decide when to end this post. How about now.

It takes me weeks to buy a new set of curtains. I think that if you're clear on your goals and priorities, the big decisions get easier. Goals and priorities still don't usually help you decide what to order at a restaurant. That's where I'd need that manticore you keep mentioning.
