On remaining useful in small doses: One of the reasons I'm still subscribed after dropping from a bunch of other channels is that every time I watch one of your videos it adds value, it encourages me to build better habits and better relationships (with people, with my health, with technology). I just took 18 teenagers to do a humanitarian trip in the Dominican Republic. To qualify, you had to give the leaders your phone for the full 2.5 weeks. It was amazing!! Nobody was just sitting looking at their phones. It was like pre-2000. They got to know each other better, their anxiety was way less, and they had so much fun because they were present. When we started we had to use a crowbar to get their phones. By the end, not one teen said they missed their phones.

I'd like to think that our society is slowly transitioning into a phase of reckoning, where we look more sceptically at our phones and especially Social Media. Now that hasn't amounted to anything yet, but I do believe that since more and more lives are negatively affected by it, the public might become more wary. Maybe Social Media will become more like drinking, where it's socially tolerated, but people are alert enough to know, that it's a serious health problem that can lead to dangerous excess.

It's really not very different from watching TV. I remember having a college friend (many years ago, pre-social media) who refused to have a TV in his apartment he shared with 2 other guys. I always thought he was being a dick at the time, but now I realized he was just smart. He said he was raised in a family that doesn't own a TV, and I believe him because he's the most well-read person out of all my friends. Of course in this day and age not having a smartphone would be stupid. But one can exercise the same principle to a large extent and achieve similar results. For me personally quitting twitter and FB was the best decision I made in the past decade, and I have recommended it to everyone I know.

This video has really reinforced for me, that my choice when I first became a smart-phone user to not put any social media apps on it (even the ones I use) was a good one. Sometimes when I explain to people that I don't access anything (even email) via my phone, people think it's kind of weird and don't understand why. THIS is why! I choose when to engage, and in what manner. I don't need to instantly know when I have an email, or when someone has liked some post, or what the newest shocking "news" is on some celebrity or politician. And there's a LOT I don't need to know at all. This video also was really eye-opening for me, about what it's like for people who are constantly being hammered by their apps. There's the obvious things like distractions, but I was shocked that they felt a profound difference immediately. That's actually really scary!

My city had a pretty bad storm that wiped our power across the city and I was without power and signal for a week and while it was very inconvinient, it felt like a digital detox. It was shocking how quickly I fell into new habits like NOT checking my phone the second I wake up, NOT spending hours scrolling through various apps, NOT doom scrolling but instead using my limited data to check up on necessary news and updates. Instead, my time was spent reading (I read 3 books that week which was 3x my usual amount), did a puzzle, played board games, went on more walks, went swimming etc. Then, once we got power and signal back I was used to my routine of going on my phone too much. I want to delete Instagram but I use it for work and I would theoretically like to delete TikTok but I find it so pleasurable so I limit myself to 90 minutes a day. The whole experience made me realize how much time I actually waste on my phone. duing that week i felt myself almost resorting to a childlike state, aka the last time I didn't have a smart phone or laptop. When I was a kid I spent a lot of time reading and playing outside and didn't pay attention to the news. My week without the internet felt a lot like that.

I held out for a long time. I was proud that I was a dumbphone only kinda gal. I did have to rely a lot on my printer and would print out maps before heading anywhere new, so it was a bit time consuming. I also had to call my mom a few times to explain that I was lost and if she could please google the street corner I was on and how to get to my doctor's appointment from there. GPS and maps was the biggest reason I wanted a smartphone. I have tried to live like Wheezy though and keep my apps to a minimum. It does creep up though I've noticed.
@remmirath422 жыл бұрын
@@evercuriousmichelle If/when I get a smartphone, it will probably also be because I want a map with GPS. Unknown street corners haven't been a problem for me, but small footpaths and unmarked hiking trails can be hard to navigate when you can't see where you are on a printed map. I've been doing something similar. About a year ago I started using TikTok and I was ADDICTED. I didn't want to stop using it, but I didn't want to spend 4h a day on it either. I put a timed locked on the app and gave the password to people I trust that I see everyday. Its worked amazingly! Over time I've added other apps to the timer: Instagram, Twitter, news apps, etc.. I've also been lowering the amount of time per day I can spend on the apps. I rarely miss the apps, and having that hurdle of asking someone to grant me more time on an app is enough to prevent me from doing it 90% of the time. (It's also a little embarrassing 😅) A lot of people have told me that they don't like this idea because it's embarrassing and they don't want to be dependent on other people. But the way I see it, these apps are literally made to be as addicting as possible. So I see my method as a way to counteract the addictiveness, not as a failing on my part.
@LauraGardnerYoga2 жыл бұрын
I was also addicted to tiktok when I discovered it a couple of years ago, I tried a timer app but it was just one that required a password that I knew so I would just enter the password telling myself I would just do 5 more minutes then that would turn into a couple of hours. In the end I just deleted it after a month. It’s a shame because I really enjoyed it but I couldn’t figure out how to use it for a reasonable amount of time. I might try giving the password to someone else that way I have to stop when the timer runs out.

I quit Twitter and FB three years ago, and it was the best decision in my life in the last decade. I have cut down on reddit time also and still trying to cut youtube time. I think there are shades of gray in the social media umbrella. For example, if you use the privacy versions of them (Nitter, Invidious, Bibliogram) you are already mitigating a lot of the problems (basically cuts out all suggestions by algorithm that lure you into wasting more time), and I now use a browser addon to redirect all these links to the privacy version to view them. This way you don't miss any useful information while staying completely free of algorithms. The other thing is, I have spent a lot of time trimming down my youtube/reddit subscriptions/follows, to the point of almost only having educational/science/hobby type content available. I find that just about 80% of my previous follows do not really contribute to my wellbeing, they were added either impulsively or indulgently. After doing so I can actually spend less or the same amount of time on a platform, but obtain more useful information and waste less time.

One of the biggest things that helped me use social media less (in addition to not having the apps on my phone) is that I log out every time I close the site and removed the websites from my most visited tabs on my browser. I keep Facebook and insta locked all day, then just unlock them for 5 minutes a day, I zoom around them checking notifications (none of which end up being particularly important) and then it locks it again after 5 minutes. Really gives you an understanding of how much time you would usually spend on apps like that. There's also desktop apps/browser extensions which do the same thing.

The problem for me is I tend to go too deep and eat into time that I need to spend on other more important responsibilities, and end up procrastinating on the latter. The other problem is, although "rabbit hole" learning can be fun, it's actually not very productive. The theory being that systematic learning is more effective since you place knowledge into a system instead of individual spots scattered in your brain. I find that the kind of stuff I read by digging into Wikipedia rarely retain in my brain. On the other hand, the stuff that I made a point about researching as part of an assignment (either through work or personal project) tend to stay in my brain much better, simply because I am able to latch it onto the project itself.

I went 50 years of my life not strapped to a phone or apps. I can take them or leave them, but I do need YT and ways of looking stuff up on the computer. I have tried to explain this to my daughter, who is 23, but she is strapped to her phone, social media, and will scroll for hours. She gets angry with me when I leave my phone in the other room and can't hear the tone of her texting me. I would rather have my land line and freedom when I'm out and about. Love you guys!

Craig is cracking me up! Twitter is SO toxic and angry...actually, MOST social media is toxic. For those who are too afraid to totally toss out their smartphone (needed for Lyft/Uber, for example), you can severely handicap your iPhone/Android by uninstalling all social media apps, email apps, etc. Then, turn off cellular data and WiFi. Finally, turn off notifications. Literally only use the phone to make/receive calls and receive/send texts.

Dark stuff. Please don't use them as a sponsor.

Same I deleted all my social apps and feel amazing. My brain no longer feels like it has 40 apps open all the time. Not scrolling through thousands of people screaming at each other all day. Someone pointed out that pre-internet our generation had no choice but to use our imagination constantly at times of solitude and we felt our feelings without too much distraction, but this generation have never had to do that which is so sad and terrifying. Society is overwrought and anxious and yet so reluctant to look to their phones as a primary source of constant anxiety and information overload. Hopefully one day it comes full circle

Something I have looked for in the past is an App that would limit the amount of screen time I could use in a single instance. For example I want something that will shut my screen off after 5 minutes(especially in certain apps) and then maybe have a cool down before I can open it again. I like having the option to use all of the functionality of normal apps but I hate how they are designed to keep you scrolling. Most of the things I have seen give you certain time limits per day but I think I'd want something to prevent even a single instance of extended use. Have you ever seen something like that?

@naomig31682 жыл бұрын
If you have an android there is something like that built in. If you go to Digital Wellbeing in settings there is an app timer option. You can set how long you want to be able to use the app. Once the time is up the app shuts off and you can't open it again until the next day

@@naomig3168 thank you. I've tried several apps that were ultimately irritating or janky. I setup the android Wellbeing one last night and already love it. I like the options it has and how it gives you subtle warnings when time is going to run out - like your screen going greyscale and time warnings that don't interrupt your current activity.

I too had an issue with being sucked into Reddit and was going to delete it but I found the mobile browser version on my phone to be a WAY less addicting experience. I just see my feed of groups I’ve joined. It hides the popular and news feeds (which is where I get sucked in). It limits my feed to just the top posts I haven’t seen recently, so it doesn’t just keep scrolling. I am now just checking Reddit MAYBE once a day and for a short moment to see what is going on in groups that actually improve my day.

The books Digital Minimalism, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts and How To Do Nothing really helped reduce my iPhone consumption and mindless scrolling. It really is a pandemic. We need to relearn to just sit with our thoughts and nothing else. Our attention is valuable and we give it away for free whenever we log into these platforms. They’re not making us better but dumber. Use that time to do something that serves you and not a big corporation. Love your videos!

I stopped reading and watching anything news related and removed all social media apps and programs that didn't contribute positively to my mental well-being from my phone. I found that I am genuinely significantly happier and more attentive to my family, hopeful and confident, with more time in my day to be a better listener, friend, father and husband. I think I found what people on social media seem to be striving after (outside of personal gratification and acceptance); happiness. Who knew that getting rid the very thing that people crave would make you a happier person?

Love thr thumbnail on this one 🤣 How do you square HAVING to use social media as your job and trying to become less addicted to it? That must be such a weird position to be in?? I used the Internet SO MUCH this week I actually got bored of it. But that's only cos I do the KZbin on my Google browser on my phone. Not having the app makes it just that little bit harder to do stuff 🤣 What I find scariest is the scrolling addiction. I grew up on Tumblr in the golden age of 2012 - 2016, so a large chunk of my teen years ingrained a habit that to this day I still catch myself doing. I use KZbin only (deleted everything else) but I STILL scroll through the menu like a zombie 😬 whhhhyyyyy
