They are traffic breakers. They are used to warn other cars before they see a firetruck to get them move out of the way faster. In the past, ambulances used a Blinder light, which was a big strobe mounted on box. It produced a big flash that was used to warn cars. Fire trucks back then used two lights at the front that oscillated up and down while reflector moved from left to right and again. It was called Lazy Eight light. It was also ised by some Cadillac and Chevy ambulances too back then.
