Given that way it tries to activate I'd lean towards it having bad batteries. It'll be a shame if that is the problem and they won't fix it... they can get some at the Walmart in town...

If they don't want to make such an easy and fairly cheap repair like replacing two batteries, I would gladly take it off of their hands! I would love to finally get ahold of a Vortex that's still in decent shape, about the same as most kiddies would love to have a Thunderbolt lol.

They could give a county down here a helping hand. Their system has at least 16 Whelens. Most of them are Vortex R4's and 404R's. They have an old 4004 that needs its jumper moved. :)

Ooh, I didn't know there were any that old in use over that way! Whose system has the 404Rs? I know that Troup County has a bunch of old Whelens but I never paid close enough attention to see if any of theirs are _that_ old.

a modern whelen siren craps out and dies while a vintage thunderbeam and model 5t are blaring away perfectly. this just shows how siren quality is going downhill. also i heard a weather radio alarm right after the whelen siren died.

Running a siren into the dirt is the problem, not the quality of the product. Thunderbeams have planetary gears that can potentially go bad if they aren't greased, and bad brushes or the loss of one of the legs of 3 phase will burn a Model 5T motor up very quickly. We just had a storm tear through the southern part of our county that knocked out the power for about a third of the population. That 2810 up the street went off like it was supposed to, where the Thunderbolt that it replaced would just be sitting there. The Thunderbolt and Model 3 can be considered modern since *most* of Federal's lineup is based on its design, particularly the rotator and choppers, and Whelen and other manufacturers have been producing electronic sirens since the civil defense era. Also the Model 2 has been in production for damn near 100 years, came from the Model 1, and is still being sold, so that would make my siren from 1928 a modern siren as well. Just because Vortexes are "modern" doesn't mean they're crap.

That's a very bad idea to not fix a siren! Here in Germany it happens very often! I have a roofless E57 in my area since one year, and it's still not fixed, because it isn't active anymore :(

It's batteries for sure. If they wanted to go real cheap, they can just get refurbished batteries at a recycling center for pennies on a dollar. But then again, they make excuses like "Oh, our siren died, and it costs thousands to repair, so we'll replace it with smartphone alerts instead", while it's just a simple problem that can be addressed for fairly cheap. I see so many perfectly fine sirens scrapped because of that.
