Hello everyone, Happy to see you back x)
Here's a new composition for oboe and cello, two of my favorite instruments. I particularly love the depth of the cello.
I'm quite happy with this piece, and I hope you enjoy it too 🤠
The next piece will probably be jazz or something similar ... because, well, I don't know much about it, but I'm eager to try, so any advice is welcome 😅
Thank you all for listening, feel free to let me know what I can improve, see you next time (soon, I promise...😌)
I've opened an insta page where I post a bit every day (🤥) and where my composition progress. Check it out if you're interested! : @tantanbpm_music
Here is the score with the pdf, midi and musescore file if you want to make changes :) :
musescore file: drive.google.c...
pdf: drive.google.c...

oboe player here! your composition sounds beautiful and i love the melodic lines you wrote for both instruments. multiphonics in the oboe and woodwinds in general have very specific sounds and are probably not what you are looking for. I’d recommend finding a video of woodwind multiphonic playing to get an idea of how a player would approach it (talking about that Bb and D). there are also sixteenth notes up in the high register, which when using high F and high G in those lines can be very impractical and thin sounding. the fingerings for those notes make it hard to play fast and you might want to consider not using high F’s and G’s in those sixteenth figures for the sake of your oboe players 😅 hope this helps!

Oh nice, an oboist, what an honor! Thank you for all the advice; I suspected there was a problem. I don't really know the techniques for playing the oboe and more generally the woodwinds or brass instruments, as you might have noticed. Thank you very much for the guidance; I will take it into account next time I compose for the oboe (for their sake as you said 😆). I just knew that it was possible to get an oboe to play two notes with multiphonics. In any case, the oboe is a magnificent instrument; I hope you never stop playing it xD

@@tantanbpm Indeed! I think it comes out of academia tbh. There are many people writing very complex music that doesn't have a lot beneath the surface. When the music is simple there's nothing to hide behind
@tantanbpm

@@aidanmays7825Hmm yes, I understand. For example, those who do counterpoint just for the sake of doing counterpoint, where there aren't really any melodies. I have friends who do that; it's mostly for practice most of the time, but it's true that they end up only doing that. Maybe I should try it too :)

@tantanbpm There's a quote by Chopin that I'll butcher for you. Beginning students make simple music and it's not very good. The intermediate student makes very complex music and develops his abilities, but it's still not great. The master makes simple music again, and it's sublime
@tantanbpm
@tantanbpm Ай бұрын
@@aidanmays7825 Hahaha, I see. I love quotes from musicians; the "master" level immediately made me think of Schubert's "Ständchen." :) But there should be a fourth category between beginner and intermediate, which is: "makes simple music because that's all they can think of and they're too lazy to make it complicated."

I love the simple lilting melody, like a folk song and the polyphonic treatment. It feels so warm and safe, like nostalgia for a place I've never been. The cello could probably have some more interesting parts, though. I can see that it has a melody line of its own, but it has Canon in D vibes cycling through some of the same ideas over and over again. It feels a bit like a lot of harmony while it can sing, intermingle, bounce off of, or have shared polyphonous ideas with the oboe. And the oboe chord seemed a bit out of place. Did you mean for this to be played by an oboe ensemble? If not, adding that single double stop was a bit weird. Finally, the chord progression was a bit stale, reminiscent of pop songs. But despite those more technical thoughts, it felt good, and comfortable and I could totally see this being used in a movie about two friends, at the end, looking back on their lives
@tantanbpm
@tantanbpm Ай бұрын
Wow, thank you very much! I'm glad to know how it makes you feel. It's true that the cello part could have been much better. I think I just don't have the counterpoint skills yet to improve that part, even if I had spent more time on the piece. Haha, and yes, I made a little mistake with the interval on the oboe. Thanks again and have a great day x)

nice piece, it's just bothering me a bit that you wrote into your notation C flats while playing in C minor and G flats while playing in G minor (instead of B naturals and F sharps). The notation would be clearer and more readable 🤌 when you have part when you are playing in C minor and have C flats there, it's sort of like on purpose that you want to troll the players or something, literally 🙆😂
