Completely. Every impossible looking South Korean and Chinese game that comes out is pretty graphically just to pull people in and then they give you really mediocre gameplay and an ethical nightmare with microtransactions to shorten an endless grind.

Best way to describe a korean MMO is with old games like Black Desert and Lost Ark. Once you get past the tutorial and initial 5-10 hours you see the the true gameplay loop and what the devs demand from you.

While not yet officially confirmed, the Chrono Odyssey release date is expected to arrive in 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is important to keep in mind however that when it was first revealed, Chrono Odyssey was slated to be released in 2022, so we can definitely expect further delays. Also there's the disclaimer at the bottom of the screen of the first few seconds of the trailer to keep in mind which basically equates to "none of this may be in the final product".

It's best to not get hyped since korean MMOs do still not have the best reputation, but I don't think saying its all bullshit without having anything to confirm that it's good either

I feel your assessment Max is spot on. This definitely looks like one of those "Overpromise, Overhype, but Under-deliver" sort of games, like yeah, the "Final Product" may or may not be like the initial trailer, but considering it's an mmo, no chance is the game going to be ANYTHING like this trailer by the time it comes out, especially if they want this game to run at a smooth 60fps and have hundreds of thousands of players on a server(s) at launch.

Exactly. My brain goes back to Maplestory in 2005 from Nexon. To make an extremely long story short, yeah, the game became time sinks in time sinks for leveling given top level was 200. Every aspect of the game over time became monetized including classes, progression for those classes, and eventually entire classes themselves were monetized for progression in them. Eventually, they just straight up let you modify the stats on your weapons with cash shop stat boosters for real money. I heard Black Desert Online didn't go that far but, similar to Lost Ark you were able to buy cash shop items with real money and sell them to players for fat amounts of in-game currency and then buy end game gear from the market place from other players. I don't expect this game to be any different from Maplestory or Black Desert if it ever makes it to market. The suits who run these free to play MMOs in Korea know their business and all of these games run on that model. You soak your player base for all you can take from them, eventually.

From what I have found out, it is slated to come out in 2024 at some point and is next-gen only and is on all next-gen consoles and PC/Steam. So here is to hoping it's a banger, and I highly doubt it will drop in 2024. But we shall see. Also, a quick side note: apparently, this game was slated to come out in 2022. So that makes me believe this game has been in development hell or they switched up engines or something. Because that means it was most likely being developed back in 2018 or so.

One thing that sprung to mind for me were the animations, they seemed very similar to games like Monster Hunter with that Dragon, and the fire demon they were fighting at the end was I'm fairly certain Goliath from DMC5's animations and move set, it could just be my imagination though, I suppose a big fire demon and a Dragon would fight fairly similar no matter the game.

Not only is it a Korean MMO, which are notorious for having lackluster gameplay with incredible visuals, but several of the large monsters look, move, and feel like monsters from other series. 3:19 has a similar feel to monsters that use the Monster Hunter Nargacuga skeleton OR the Elden Ring dragons. 3:31 is just Tobi Kadachi. 3:43 is either using the Monster Hunter Gore Megala skeleton OR, again, the Elden Ring dragon skeleton.

Max, Korean mmo's have looked (AND played) roughly this good for years now. Can't speak for this game of course, but Black Desert Online is another one I first played 5 years ago now, and it looked nearly as good in-game as this trailer does now back in 2018. Would've stayed with bdo a lot longer too, if (like many Korean mmo's) it wasn't so plagued by pay-to-win microtransactions and constant in-game adverts for itself... that part of it Max nailed. lRL greedy horseshlt takes all the fun and immersion out of it.

NPixel made the MMO called Gran Saga in Korea, it one of the most successful MMOs of 2021 in Korea and it was cross platform with PC and Mobile, this looks like their 1st MMO in Unreal 5.

when it comes to the whole "this is gonna be the greatest MMO you've ever experienced" type of game, I always think about ArcheAge. I love the concept of that game and many of its systems (specifically custom classes and the player built structures), yet the game suffers from the issue of not respecting the fact that you are a player who wants have a fun time playing a video game lol. If this Chrono Odyssey thing is any good I will be positively surprised, but yeah. Not currently on my list of things to get hype over.

Tbh i really hope this game is good. Like I can’t remember a lot of games that looked good and ended up being ACTUALLY good. Like the only few games that comes to my mind is Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima, Re4R. I think these games were as good as the trailers and maybe even better. So my only hope is that this game will be like them because i truly want a game to be as good at the trailers and tbh it’s been a while since i enjoyed a game. Re4r was great but it was a remake so i want something brand new and Hogwart Legacy was... it was okay i guess. But i just want a game to make me play and have fun. In addition to what Max pointed out as concerns, I have 2 more to add. Notice that the larger boss fights are in flat spaces. The enemy Ai is most likely going to be "dumb" because they don't know how to handle large encounters with terrain or geomety that's not a flat plane. That also makes me worried about player combat too. Is this another example of me just looking at my buttons waiting for cooldowns to be done? The second concern I have is the time element. No one has quite cracked time reverse or pause in an MMO setting. I feel that one scene at 4:14 is probably a private instance for the story, and we probably won't see something like that in an open multiplayer setting. In short, it all looks too good to be true.

MMO's were never my thing. And as awesome as this looks, Max, you might be on to something there. I've been a console gamer all my life so specs and frame-rate goes right over my head, but when it comes to games like a Wukong (I completely forgot about that), and that other game, Lost Soul Aside, I tend to get my hopes up because I've been wanting something like those for a long time. Even that one game, Crimson Desert, I think that's what it's called. I think it's a spinoff of Black Desert or something like that. Anyway, how many E3's has it been since that game was shown? Even though I'm looking for what's next and these games are right up my alley I'm almost at the point of do these games really exist or are they even getting made and not some sort of graphical showcase. Oh well.

The maximum amount of players I think we're going to see loaded in is for certain events/scenarios such as, what appears to be, the massive world boss in this trailer. I played some Black Desert Online on console, and the biggest thing with Action MMOs is the clunkiness of battles. They cram so many abilities and they have so many classes. If you take even 1 day off from playing, you have to relearn so many button combinations. Granted BDO is very old at this point, but I would t mind att least trying this out hopefully it isn’t subscription based, or maybe it could be tied to a PS++ subscription

I think my biggest issue is the "MMO" aspect. The more I look at this trailer, the more I get vibes of a single player or an online co-op type of game, but trying to imagine this as an MMO, especially with the time-warping elements, all I can imagine is frame rate issues and connection desyncs being rampant for at least a few months on launch. Granted, I haven't touched (modern) MMOs in years, so I could very easily be out of the loop on how MMOs function in the current generation.

When I saw it at first without knowing anything about it, I was like. “Single player action RPG, the graphics look mad, but if they can pull it off, I’d be interested” Then I saw multiple players and thought. “Hmmm dunno how it’s going to run if it’s multiplayer, but as long as it’s limited it could be possible.” Then I saw the dragon battle and found out it was an MMO? Yeah. I dunno bud.

I got so excited when I saw "Chrono" in the title. All I could think was "OMG!!! a new Chrono Trigger!" Then saw this video... Disappointed it wasn't a New Chrono Trigger...but still this game does look good though. Can't deny that.

Game looks cool to me. I got a Dragon's Dogma vibe from it. 1 human player, multiple computer companions. That game got a MMO sequel that kept the combat the same and added in multiplayer. I think it was multiple people and their computer companions in group battles. As for the footage... at 1:04 they say that this is PC footage and some of it is just trailer visuals. The more impossible things are probably trailer but the general level of fidelity isn't impossible imo. RTX 4090, DLSS upsampling, frame generation... that could be the PC they're running it on. One where the GPU cost more than 3x what a PS5 costs. As for consoles... that 30fps-looking footage doesn't seem impossible to me. Demon Souls Remake was a launch game. Ratchet and Clank was a launch year game. This game doesn't look impossible compared to titles actually built from the ground up for current gen systems with no design consideration at all given to, "yeah but the VCR XB1 from 2013 can't handle that."

I agree with Max and had the exact same reaction when I first watched the trailer. This reeks of 'too good to be true' energy that we've seen from the gaming industry for decades. It is most definitely a vertical slice and concepts. Glad it is getting pointed out. I hope this game is good but be cautious.

THE GRIND.. the enhancing system.. the items breaking from the enhancement system.. The cash shop items that protect your items from breaking.. THE GRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND.

It looks so good but I *CAN'T* afford to let my guard down. I've wasted too much time, emotion, and energy. It's insanely rare that games like this deliver on their promises. I wonder if we have nothing more than a trailer for vaporware from a company that is looking for new investors.

It looks like there are very basic systems in place, visually it's there, but mechanically it's bare bones. You can tell from the combat collision, animations, physics(ragdoll), and interactions. This game would have to be further out than Black Myth Wulong was when it's trailer first hit.

Possible player grind and microtransactions aside, it looks like there is an element of time stop. Now that could be story moments or solo events but how does that play out when you have other players involved? Add that to how good it looks… all I’ll say is I hope it comes out well, people love it and everyone’s happy.

I'm also curious to see how the time manipulation works in a dungeon/raid setting with multiple players because it looks really interesting. Also most korean p2w mmo's are still fun despite the scummy microtransactions. The p2w aspects only really kick in when you're trying to keeping up with the top 10% of players doing endgame. Just play them while their fun and once you've hit a paywall and it's no longer fun then just STOP PLAYING. Unfortunately most people just don't have that level of self control apparently.

I think a sadder reality is when they manage to release a game like this, where it meets all your expectations for gameplay, graphics and performance... but then the game is complete and utter trash in the end because of their awful monetization, end game grind and awful UI / inventory bloat with tons of premium items that require paid keys to open or use.

I wished this would've been a single player game or co-op at most. Like you said, I see Lost Ark all over again with the whole Korean MMO aspect I don't know. I see potential bot problems, dubious in-game purchases, etc

To people that don’t know, this game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, and is actually the first MMO to be developed on the engine(the engine swap is why the game was delayed after 2022). Graphics as shown is definitely possible to achieve and can definitely be done on said engine, but I’m not sure about the frames being it is an MMO. I’d worry less about the games looks and appeal, and worry about if it’s coming out soon due to being a MMO, as those usually take at least 5-7 years of development.
