But still, I liked it and I started liking it more and more the more I played, eventually ending up loving it. But I cannot deny how fundamentally boring it can be. There are some games that I can’t understand another’s dislike for. Games I loved so much that when I hear someone with the opposite opinion, I’m flabbergasted and question their taste... Death Stranding is not one of those games. @Azazel There's 9 billion people on the planet. I'm sure you aren't the only one. I wouldn't call him a genius so much as a creative revolutionary. Just his Metal Gear series alone pushed the boundaries on genres (invented stealth action), cinematic cutscenes, character development, and storytelling. There's hardly a blockbuster made today that hasn't been at least a little (and sometimes a lot) influenced by his work.
@vagrant15154 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of 'Japanese' cheese that makes it a lot harder for the western audience to get into his games. That said, they are all very poignant for many different reasons. Metal Gear Solid was one of the very first cinematic fully voiced video games in the industry. Kojima was one of the first that bridged the divide between video games and the big screen. Beyond pioneering this, he also has pioneered the stealth action genre of games. He is one of the most influential names in the industry along with many other greats. That said I understand why his games turn off a lot of people, the same way that Anime is highly beloved world wide but almost always makes me cringe when I watch it. But where his genius lies to me, is his direct dissection of Western Culture, and tackling deep themes that are systemic in our culture and affects the rest of the world. He's an incredibly intelligent and learned man, and most people that can get through his games from beginning to end will quickly figure that out. Death Stranding, I personally thought was a masterpiece. It's one of the few games in the last five years I was able to finish from beginning to end. Had an incredible story. But mixed between 40+ hours of exploration gameplay I can see why it turned many people off.

@@cristobalbalenciaga7295 I think it's because the core mechanic of death stranding is terrain traversal, each mission you set out on is a sort of gamble between efficiency and failure. Do you carry less cargo to make the journey easier, or more cargo to make more money on the trip? Do you bring a lot of traversal tools like ropes and ladders and further overburden yourself or bring less and risk having to take a longer or more dangerous route around a mountain? The game was specifically designed to make traversal the focal point of conflict. I don't think any other game has done that before. So with most games if you fall climbing up a mountain it's usually disappointing because the challenge of the game is a dungeon or something at the top of mountain (i.e. the destination you are trying to go), not the journey of actually getting there.

@@OscarMemo333 That too, these cutscenes still manage to be really long with a lot of dialogue yet about 1/10th of the important info you’d get just playing the main story in Metal Gear Solid. The difference is, finding stuff out during codec calls or cutscenes was impactful because it could effect or provide context to what you were doing right there in the moment. Now that stuff is during the down time, so it’s like “Oh, okay then. Sure, why not?” I hate to give MGSV credit for this, but at least the cassettes could be listened to during missions, even if it was more tedious than previous entries.

Here's some incredibly well received games, Limbo, Journey, Portal. I love those and I know I could burn through them all in one day if I felt the urge. @mikefisher40514 жыл бұрын
@@alex-ki5wm Hey you can feel that way, but I think MGSV was plenty polarizing enough to the fanbase. Personally Venom Snake is my favorite Snake, and while some people would say it is lacking in story compared to the others, but I like it for what is there. It has so many systems that the average player might never see once in a playthrough, so many tricks and tools that you'd be forgiven to call it replayable, but something isn't better simply for being longer. Avengers Endgame was 3 hours and as much as I was worried about that, it didn't feel like it. Pacing is important, and I think many games make the mistake of stretching it's content out far too thin. MGSV included, with a few huge mostly empty sandboxes full of kinda repetitive missions. Therapeutic in your best moods, monotonous in your worst. I do think it's all intentional, because the madman that he is, wants us to feel that long realistic somewhat mundane gap of time, and be "immersed". We have lives, and some amount of time is too much to ask. (probably like reading my response to that very short comment) tldr, Imagine a sandwich made with an entire loaf of bread, that's a Kojima sandwich in this argument.

The game answers a lot of these questions as you go along, but I can definitely see what you mean. Besides delivering packages, I thought this was one of the best games I've played...but not because of the gameplay exactly. The final chapters were incredible...the final bosses, the one scene where it's like an old-timey fighting game with Troy Baker's character, and the cutscenes. As far as the main character being unlikeable..I can see that as well, but I like that he didn't fit into the typical mold of a protagonist. Idk, I liked how odd and convoluting everything was...I also like things with a lot of dialogue/context. xD

It should have just been an animated film/series, then. It's like they have a good story, but couldn't be bothered with the gameplay, so flipped a coin, then span a few wheels, and it landed on post-apocalyptic postman. Like, sure, liking it due to the story being good makes much more sense, but a game doesn't be need to tell a story in the first place/it's not what they're for. Games are mainly for the gameplay, stories have always been a secondary component after the story. People want to have fun controlling the funny man on the screen. If the gameplay is awful, but the story is good, it's more just a glorified film.
@Ali_delightful Жыл бұрын
Maybe, but I think fits more into the category of being a specific niche within gaming. To me, it was just another game with a different style of playing. It's not for every player. Idk, I didn't think it was a glorified film, just my take. @ShiningXwolf4 жыл бұрын
Very few people have put in enough time to accurately describe why. I, unfortunately, am one. It's actually really good on the surface. The "campaign" claims are BS but the RPG gameplay and stat-play is robust and allows for amazing customization, but the game is plagued by being just a complete shit-show cash grab with every single stat on every single piece and every single drop being randomized. You rely on crossing your fingers and hoping for hours and hours and hours to make progress with no garuntees, even if you drop thousands. I've played for over a year and put 1200 into the game, which disgusts me in retrospect, even though I still play to this day, but it really is nothing compared to the majority of the community. There are a few end game f2p players but they don't even come close to as strong as even moderate paying players. It has a solid community if you find the right channels to hang out in, and the RPG system is good once you put enough time in to collect a large amount of gear to sort through and play with, but it has a few major flaws that are inherent to mobile gaming that ultimately kill it for most people at the start. But I also get that it's a meme at this point that people poke at because of the over-sponsorship on youtube. Most people haven't played it for more than 20 minutes or even at all and just love to hate it for the wrong reasons, even though it deserves to be hated.

Just a correction here: time fall does damage plants and rocks. That's why the world looks the way it does. The roads eroded away, and so did rocks, creating the eerie landscape. The only plants you see (apart from a certain area) is moss because it can grow almost anywhere, is tiny enough to be affected by time fall entirely and reproduces fast. In fact, you can see it sprout, grow and die in the span of seconds during the time fall. From what I understood trees died out because time fall accelerated the trees' growth and metabolism, not allowing the roots to supply enough water and nutrients (time fall only acceletates time for things it directly lands on). As to the cities, I'm sure they were built with some materials made specifically to last millennia. After all, time fall only ages the things it falls on so a thin coating would be enough to keep buildings safe.

I probably would have liked it all the same, but to be fair its not for everyone. It has an amazingly weird trippy story, a lot of beautiful sights and landscapes, and its got enemies that are fun to defeat, even though they're really easy. Although this is in my own opinion, not fact of course. I love going through a heavy BT area with some lvl1 hema grenades and ending as many BTs as possible. Im only on act 3 so please dont tell me if that does anything, I want it to be a surprise. I also like running around with the level 2 bola gun and taking down MULEs in the second zone so I can see porters walking around delivering stuff more often. I don't know why, but watching them work is kinda cool. I just absolutely love helping people and delivering lost cargo from other players to where it needs to go for them is great and feels great for me, in fact I went back to the first zone after completing it just to see if I can help more people, I build structures and donate tons of resources and supplies as much as I can just so I can maybe help someone a little bit more. I think its multiplayer done right even though its a single player game. I will be honest, I consider myself a gamer, and even so I still didn't really know Kojima was such a "big name" for so many people. Its just a fun game to sit back and relax after a long tiring day. Feel free to disagree, but try clearing out camps of MULEs with a bola gun and stealing one of their trucks, I love doing that too much.

Only one of four trailers actually showed what the game was actually about, every other one focused on the story, this created expectations for DS to be something like Kojima`s other games, most notably MGS. DS is a very different game from litteraly everything else ever released, one way or another some people are not going to enjoy it,and they really should have been up front about that. I personally liked it, I`ve heard he biggest complain was that it`s a walking simulator, which is only half true, the whole difficulty and fun of the game is figuring out the best way to traverse terrain with the most cargo, yes you are walking, but you are constantly making choices on how you are getting to your destination, this sometimes includes going through BT areas. And tbh I can see how most people wouldn`t like this kind of gameplay. The other biggest complaint was how confusing the story was, and how it had shit writing. I fully agree with the shitty writing, the game has it`s fair share of good scenes, but holy shit the dialogue is so clunky and cringe inducing, especially with side characters and in the exposition dumps. As for the confusing part, I don`t really agree, it`s fairly complex but totally understandable, the issues only arise when you really get into the details, by that I mean the diary entries, there are so many conflicting lines and pages, so many convenient events and actions. Seriously, if you want a good story then just watch the cutscenes, they overall amount to a cool story about nihilism (not the edgy kind of nihilism, I feel like I should especify that). Tl:dr YoU AmErIcAnS CaN`t CoMpReHenD ArT Ok?!?? Edit: If you want to experience DS without playing it, please do yourself a favor and watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJiVimiordGaY68 It`s 7 fucking hours long (sry for that), but it covers litteraly everything this game has to offer in the most objective way I could find on youtube. If you really want to form an opinion on the game, I suggest you watch it, it`s really well made.

Idk about the story being confusing. It's a pretty straight forward premise once you complete it. I don't think anyone beat the game with a ton of hold ups. Like the premise is very straight forward even without the villian reveal.

This makes me wonder what Silent Hills would’ve turned out to be like. Definitely would’ve preferred that game over Death Stranding but maybe it had an over involved story and cringy dialogue too. I’ve got a strong feeling that it didn’t and due to the established lore and the perfection that was PT, I doubt it would’ve been nearly as polarizing as Death Stranding, but it just makes ya wonder.

This is one of those games where I love and hate it at the same time. I love how fleshed out the world building is when you explore the game, the desolate environment and how players can help eachother worldwide. But I hate how they executed a competent story so poorly, and bafflingly. How they treated promising characters poorly by shafting their character development or with poor writing, and how overly pretentious it rubbed off onto me. Also Fragile's performance is so stiff and robotic to the point where it started to bug me. Nothing against the actress.

This game is divisive because its core premise for gameplay is one that isn't really implemented to this degree in pretty much any other game. Needing to plan out your route, adapt on the fly to changing terrain and storms (or bandits), and then successfully pulling off everything is a feeling of accomplishment I haven't felt in many games before. Yet just like going on a hike is in real life - it takes time and some effort, so if you're just looking for quick action you aren't going to enjoy it. The accomplishment is in successfully overcoming the minute to minute navigation and managing longer trips - without that challenge and without the constraints, there wouldn't be much to this game. I greatly enjoyed this game, and I'm hardly a Kojima fan - I have yet to ever play the Metal Gear Solid games (though I have seen them played and am quite familiar with them indirectly). It has some questionable decisions at times, such as how long it takes to do anything when resting in terms of long animations and the like. But the actual navigation elements are the selling point of this game, and only people who actually enjoy needing to plan out their moment to moment route and do pathfinding will enjoy it. For those of us who do, it's an extremely unique experience.
@noahrodricks5923 Жыл бұрын
but you would get the same thing from just going on a hike, like seriously your not wrong but when you come home after work to have fun, do you really want to do something in a game that you could just do irl (I know you said that in your comment but still, it's a game and if you really wanted that experience then why not actually experience it). I respect your view on this, but even the route finding can be had in a lot of open world games, like Days Gone for example, and it's fun yes, but to make that into the entire concept of a game with a complete disregard for proper (and arguably interesting) story narrative seems like a bit of stretch. Again no disrespect and I respect your opinion because what you have said is correct, but to have it considered to be a good game on par with other triple A titles is (again) a stretch.
@echomjp Жыл бұрын
@@noahrodricks5923 First of all, going on a hike requires going out of the house and finding a good spot. Secondly, going on a hike doesn't tend to involve you carrying ladders and other items with you, or jumping into vehicles on the fly to navigate, or dealing with mind-numbing horrors or bandits. It also requires you be in a certain level of physical fitness, and you can't take extreme risks because in real life you might end up falling off a cliff in a way you can't get back up from. Yes, I want to do things in a game I can do in real life if the experience itself is enjoyable. I don't see how you can argue that Death Stranding lacks a "story narrative," though. It very clearly has one of those, and it is brought together by all of your interactions and movements as you move through the story. Unless by lacking a "story narrative" you mean to say "I dislike its pacing," which is entirely subjective.

@@echomjp No, I'm saying the pacing is shit and the game narrative is what you would call 'hanging off threads' which basically means that throughout the game it lacks key features that should be in any good story, 1. The villain does not have a motive for his actions, and is just said that he wants to see the world burn. The shit thing about this is that the line of who this comes from is in reference with the joker, actually had a motive in the dark knight, which was to prove the innate madness of men. Higgs doesn't have some secret motive like the joker, and he's not even looking for power cause if he really wanted to he could have killed Sam whenever he wanted, and he makes this clear as well. this meaning his reason for his actions being 'seeing the world burn' is a poorly written, cope-out for why a villain is a villain, like I could understand if he worshiped the BT's but he doesn't, he just controls them to a degree. 2. Sam, the main character has no real relationships in game due to his Aphenphosmphobia, meaning he doesn't empathise, he doesn't ever truly interact with anyone, and he doesn't have anything for the player to relate to expect maybe he loss, which is the main theme of the story, and yet there isn't any revelation to this nor him coming to terms with this, his simply completes objectives given to him. The curve ball of this is that he speaks, which doesn't make sense for the character they were going for. They should have either made him more relatable or had him a silent protagonist, not some in-between cause it doesn't work. assign

M3L0619 and nobody will. It’s subjective. If it’s your cup of tea it’s good, if it’s not it’ll still be good but not to you ;)

M3L0619 no actually everybody told the truth about it. If you actually *listen* to people talk about it they all said how bad a game it was it’s just that liars and fanboys put a positive score on their negative reviews

That's the Internet. Everybody's freedom of speech is regarded as the absolute truth, especially by its authors. Add to the irony the illusion of choice by the prodded masses through opinions

@@a.g.m8790 - Absolute hogwash. I'm not a fanboy of anything or anyone within gaming. My fanboyism begins and ends within the sport of Boxing, as my 22 thousand subscriber KZbin channel indicates. I absolutely loved Death Stranding. The real existence of "Liars" comes in those who pretend to have played Death Stranding when they clearly haven't. It's become a hipster trend on every gaming channel I on/off watch in recent times to hate on Kojima, people feeling like they are "against the grain" or/and hate him for his anti-Trump comments. Either way, judging a game you haven't played is the real problem within gaming. Too many hispter muppets like you who can't allow people to like what they like, whilst you decide you hate or love games based on a few KZbin videos. Melt
