As a Swiss who does hiking tours several times per summer, I congratulate you! 4.5h might not be a very long hike, but 1300m is quite something, especially to start with. The feeling of being dirty and disgusting disappears when you realize what you have achieved (also everyone is equally disgusting) and you are too tired and proud to really care. It's an unbeatable experience and it doesn't stop being amazing, no matter how often you do it. I can recommend Merino gear (shirts etc) for these hikes, they don't smell, are warm and dry quickly. It really doesn't matter whether you shower or not, it kind of grounds you and maybe teaches you something about the necessity of our everyday luxuries. Also even if you sweat a lot and it's 30+ C down there, never ever not take gloves, a warm shirt, a windshield, fiber fur/polar fleece jacket/pullover with you. It's always freezing up there.

Merino Shirts rule! I love them! When I used them for the first time, I immediately did the endurance test. 5 days with the Enduro off road and little luggage. A quick wash in the evening at the stream and a quick dry. 5 hard days = no smell, always warm. perfect. Now I always wear them when hiking and motorcycling.

4.5 Hours as a starting trip is quite something already. I always do 2-3 weeks summer vacations hiking and I try to get into walking shape by taking it slow at first. So nothing longer than 5 hours for the first 3 days. When you take the usual colour coding from the tour books with route suggestions it's usually 2 blues and one red in the first three days and from then on its red and black tours and blue only on the resting days when I feel like I want to do more than just sit around.
@MrsStrawhatberry

@@Quotenwagnerianer It seems the colour coding is different where you live, In Switzerland yellow is easy, red/white is mountain routes, and blue is alpine (can be quite dangerous) and pink is winter hiking/snow shoe hiking

I can recommend Swiss Topo(national application, free of charge) if you want to hike in Switzerland, there you can import GPS data too, all routes will be the same colour and it will not tell you how difficult they are but you'll the elevation and time etc.

As a retired flight attendant, I can only recommend to pack your (emergency) clothes (underwear, socks, t-shirts, shorts - and for hiking your warmer gear) in Tuppa wear (with the clip-on lids) very easy to pack (roll everything up) and always dry and minty drag smelling of awesome Persil washing powder (and only that!) even months after packing. I always had a couple of them in my carry on (and had to use them a few times as my crew suitcase got lost somewhere). And one Tuppa wear box with toiletries from DM/Rossmann filled with the tester sized stuff, toothpaste, deodorant, shower gel, face wash, and emergency band aid, blister protection, Bepanthen Salbe, Ilon Salbe, Ibuprofen a.s.o. That part of Germany is so beautiful. I often go to the Walchensee, and take the Toll Road along the Isar valley from Wallgau to Vorderriß. Thank you for the really entertaining video!

I laughed so hard 😂 Thanks, Laura & family for finally making NALF - a male a real man! I'm bavarian born and raised and the co-sleeping in huts and no running water are some of my earliest childhood memories. Now I do these hikes with my kids - it's the most rewarding thing after getting sweaty, thirsty, feel your feet (get real Bergschuh!!!) and downgrade your lifestyle a little, to be on top of the mountain and to wake up to a beautiful scenery the next morning. Congrats!

I used to work in Schloss Elmau many, many, many moons ago. Went to the Meiler-hutte a few times. Up and down on the same day most.Wetterstein Alm we did sometimes just to get a few beers on an afternoon. Soooo many nice hiking trails in that area. From Schloss Elmau we calculated each stop about 1.5 hours. So Wetterstein, Schachen, Meiler-hutte. Leave early, at 07:00 and be back in the evening. There were (perhaps still are) a lot of routes to the Wetterstein Alm that where not that main road. Soooo many memories. Thanks for bringing them back again. The most I remember one trip I did alone to Schachen and then back via the back route through Schachen Tor. Saw a Chamois (Gems) pretty close up. All this when nobody had cellphones or even had a camera with them. So no proof. But that does not matter. I have that memory.

Did that hike when I was about 10, 11 years old with my grandparents who at the time had been around 65 years. Instead of overnighting at the Meilerhütte we did that at the Schachenhaus. But early next morning we climbed up to the Meilerhütte, had a Skiwasser and moved onto the Austrian side to decent the mountain across rocky grounds as we spotted Berg-Gemsen. It was marvelous.

I can so relate to your trip, Nalf. Did something alike myself together with a friend when I was in your current age but to a different hut in the alps region. What was stated to be a 4h hike with mostly medium difficulty we however needed 5.5 hours, totally exhausted at arrival. In the end, our shirts were so soaked with sweat that they steamed in the coolness of the mountain air. While we were proud to have made it, we were just too worn out to enjoy the surroundings in the evening. The next morning was much better, breathtaking views from the top. We had the best visibility, while the cloud cover was below us and it was raining in the valley. A hike I will never forget. But I still have one advice for you: Please buy some good mountain hiking boots for your next hike, which have a good grip and protect your ankles.

Beautiful hike! I enjoy hiking the Alps as well. I recommend you try this more often. It's extremely rewarding. Not only does it help your physical fitness but - at least for me - it also helps me a lot mentally. I don't know why this is, but mountain hikes somehow open up my mind. Maybe it is the combination of physically exhausting work combined with the breathtaking scenery? Or maybe it is because I feel so small in comparison to the mountain yet so blessed to be here. If you train a bit more and become more experienced you can also try bivouacing outside. I've done this numerous times and I can tell you, watching the sunrise on a mountain will make you cry with joy after a long dark night. Once that first rays of light hit you, that's just awesome. In this moment you feel you're part of something bigger, a part of creation.

NALF: Get yourself a wide roll of Leukoplast (brown fabric tape). At the first sign of a hotspot on your feet, tape it over and then leave it on until you are going home. If that's three or four days, so be it. If you have known areas where you often develop blisters, tape them before the hike. Another option is to wear very thin silk or synthetic socks under a pair of hiking socks. This eliminates most of the friction that can cause blisters. Also, get yourself some ankle-high light hikers. Your ankles are probably very strong, so rolling them is not likely for you. However, it's nice to protect them from scrapes and bangs against rocks and roots. Thanks for this beautiful and amusing video!

Nice hiking trip, NALF. Great video as always. I remember my teen years hike's with my parents. We took almost daily hikes during our vacations in Switzerland. Beautiful landscapes, wildlife, food, the well earned exhausted sleep after a day of hiking up and down mountains. Yeah, the physics of pressure in an enclosed container is pretty wild. Hopefully it wasn't a glass bottle. But assuming Laura (as the German she is) did some research and got you lightweight aluminum bottles, or if not those, plastic bottles. At least they only rupture instead of shattering into thousands of sharp splinters. While it was 'merely' 1500-1700m elevation change, that is more than enough to decrease the outside pressure enough to cause such material failures.
@73smoo

If she did research, she would have found out that aluminum makes you lose your brain, it makes you getting Alzheimer's. Therefore plastic bottles. @LucaSitan
@LucaSitan Жыл бұрын
During high season (summer months) better make a reservation, they get really full real fast. And they're not cheap because everything has to be brought up the mountain, so just the bed will set you back around 24 Euros (if you're a member of the Alpine club, it's half price) plus dinner. Kids are cheaper. Some huts have private rooms, those are 35 to 45 Euros and a lot of huts do not have showers. You also need slippers to wear inside or borrow some random ones of theirs. And most don't allow dogs but can camp outside in a tent. The atmosphere is always great, but sleeping that close to a stranger is, well, pretty strange 😅 And bedtime is typically early because most people leave again by about 7am. You get breakfast and for around 2 Euros extra you can make yourself sandwiches for lunch to take with you.

It used to prevent me as well. But it's only bad when you have snorers. Usually you are so tired after a long day and a warm meal and some alcohol that everybody just drops dead at 22:00. Then can get up at 6 in the morning, be all refreshed, just have a nice quick breakfast and then you are on the road again. What prevents me more than the sleeping rooms is the amount of baggage you carry around when you do a to b trips instead of roundtrips.

Now I want to depreciate this as a stereotype but I did make a family trip to Austria a while back (all of us are Germans). My dad and the present uncle ended up having endless discussions about the edibility of mushrooms (the uncle usually won because he's a professional gardener and my dad is a hobbyist mushroom enthusiast), we ended up with two weeks of perennial mushroom steam because on the off days, the two of them hauled a metric f#ckton of mushooms to be cut and dried in the oven and on the not-off days we wandered around the Alps and most of us would be soaked in sweat and complaining about the length while Opa just marched ahead, waited for us at the next tourist trap and complained about the amount of time we'd take. Of course, as soon as we'd made it he'd be impatient and ready to continue the walk. Mind you, we had water rations (and sanity, apparently) and Opa didnt.

I have a serious case of orophobie (=fear of the mountains), which means that I get anxiety attacks if I see mountains. (So I am not afraid of the hight, but of the mountains towering beside me.) I wach this with awe, lucky, that those mountains cannot jump off of thet monitor 😀
