I'm a physics teacher who has studied karate for several years. Much respect to Sifu Adam and his willing assistant Chris for these videos. Another aspect, I think, is Newton's 3rd Law. Whatever force is being applied by person 1(attacker) is simultaneously being applied to person 2 (defender). I could be mistaken, but in the defensive movements Sifu applied, the force from person 1 ultimately gets applied to the outside of Sifu's hands and arms while that same force winds up being being felt by the inside of person 1's arms. In general, a force applied on the inside hurts a lot more than the same force on the outside. Hence, Chris feels that force more acutely than does Sifu. The other aspect is that momentum is transferred when a force is applied over time. Momentum is mass times velocity, so greater velocity change occurs when you have large momentum transfer. Even a great force, if applied over a very short time, only transfers a small amount of momentum. When the attacker essentially gives up the attack immediately because of pain, the defender can maintain almost any stance he wants. On the other hand, if a giant boulder comes crashing in from the side, at the same angle as Chris's punch, Sifu would indeed have a hard time stopping it. But if the boulder is weak enough at the striking point to crumble into lots of smaller rocks, then Sifu's stance would still work. Moral of the story, make sure you make contact in a spot that causes more pain to the attacker than to yourself. And have the best stance you can in the moment. Sorry for the long note! It's early Saturday morning and I really enjoyed the respectful way that the "hater" was addressed!

I'm not aware of the original context. But I'd argue that Adam is intercepting the punch so early that the direction of incoming force hasn't yet reached the line that would compromise his balance. It's more or less head-on at the moment of contact and Adam is leaning forward to make sure of that. The problem is that it's not realistic to expect this early an interception against most real attacks i.e when you don't know which arm is coming and when.

It's both interesting and sad how some people will criticize something before they understand it. You actually learn more if you ask the question " Why do you do it that way ? " instead of just criticizing something that you don't agree with. Nobody knows everything, but criticizing something before asking the question ' Why? ' can be a sign that someone thinks they know it all. As far as ' Nobody knows everything ' goes, when I was real young someone told me that Nobody knows everything. I've been looking for Nobody for over fifty years and I haven't found them yet.
@mattbugg45683 жыл бұрын
Truth is people don't throw lead arm punches. They usually try to retract them as fast as they throw them to increase punching power. So the whole I'm going to throw a punch stop re- angle and press with my forearm because he's out of alignment thing is technically B.S. at a certain level you start rolling around arms and grabbing them not really looking to off balance an opponent but strike certain points. And the foot placement arm alignment etc. Is kinda out the door to rolling around or taking the arm off line. That's why your sifu told you at higher levels they just use oy and gnoy moon Choi. It's because the art is actually deeper then rolling arm bars.

When you had your feet very close together and took the big punch...I watched it in slow motion and I could see clearly that your success depended on two things (aside from your basic good alignment and fitness level): you knew the punch was coming, and because of this you were able to lean forward slightly, almost "falling" on him a little. This very small entering move takes a nearly vertical line of foot to center of gravity to contact with the other person into more of a one o'clock line, it's a small adjustment with a big payoff in terms of the physics involved. With the right targeting of the contact area, that line can used to do all kinds of things that straight up vertical cannot. For instance, if you stood with your feet together like that and wore a blindfold and the person in front of you was reasonably good at moving quietly and gave you a sudden shove to the chest I don't think you'd have enough time to adjust and your center would be behind your heels in a split second. If I was taking unknown pushes from any direction while blindfolded, I would take the biggest stance I could take and still stay mobile, which is to say probably what's called a medium sized stance. Not discounting what you're doing. I really like what you're doing. But the critical guy maybe isn't taking into account the fact that your structure is going to change as you meet the punch. In one arena, the arena of blind out of the blue force, a given stance might be weak. But in another arena, the arena of having an opponent in front of you, knowing he's about to punch and having the skill set (and balls) to enter right into that, it's very strong. It can be easy to get these things confused.
@SilenMonser3 жыл бұрын
nice assessment. as you've indicated, there will be people who look at this and suddenly question the validity on the basis of a sudden unexpected attack and therefore the "feet together" stance would be useless. they'd likely be right IF THEY FORGET that this demo considered a situation where a fight is already happening or expected to escalate into the fight.
@houseofkungfu25432 жыл бұрын
well Im sure you're never going to fight blind folded or a person with adams skill level wont be in a compromised position, so its mute point. why dont yu just take the info for what it is and stop trying to be a smartass and train harder. you guys these days have a serious ego problem always trying to disagree with someone for attention.

Darrell is the kind of person who not only relies too much on stagnant mechanics to make something work, but I bet wholly his guy has NEVER been in a real confrontation and if he says he has, he's a lair. This is the kind of thinking that has lead to WC people losing fights they boldly claim they can win because they thump WC books and maxims all day and have no practical application beyond friendly exchange. Let alone, it's just computer confidence this guy has. In reality, if he was actually worth his salt, he'd come in person to prove his point. I didn't understand why Adam wasn't been pushed back? What is he doing that prevents that?
@sethrenshaw87923 жыл бұрын
He wasn't getting pushed back because he was "attacking" the incoming punch. When two objects of equal momentum collide, in a fully elastic (the energy is absorbed) collision, both objects cancel each other's momentum and they stop moving; in a fully inelastic (no energy is absorbed) collision, both objects would bounce off each other. When Sifu Chan throws his hands out to intercept the attack, he hits the arm to cancel out the energy from the attack, then immediately relaxes to absorb the energy into his relaxed arm. That is why Chris kept making faces (because his arm was getting hit, and it hurt), and why Adam's arm stayed in contact with Chris (because the attacking momentum was absorbed, so both arms stopped moving). Hope this helps!
