The reason Muslim men did not shake hands with women is because they honor and respect you as a woman and a person who has a right to her dignity, her individual and breathing space, and her self-respect. Also, their hands are not their own but a trust given to them by Allah for touching only those females who are given to them in trust by virtue of either a blood bond like a sister, mother, or child or in the sacred bond of marriage as a wife.

shaking a woman's hand doesn't take away her dignity, and saying that it does, purely on the basis that she is a woman, is sexist

Kanda Rabi Our schools are separated. Boy section, girl section. I was home schooled so even if I did go it'd be the same. I do not want to hug a girl that is not my sister, mom, aunt, grandma, daughter, or wife. I know myself. Had I hugged a girl I would have done stuff with her. The same goes for a girl... had she hugged a man, she'd probably have the same feelings. It is scientifically proven.

Odd how many non-Muslims actually tuned into this. Maybe its a good thing. Two points to the non-Muslim 1) If you hate to be criticized for doing things which Muslims frown upon, then don't be a hypocrite and turn around and insult Muslim beliefs. 2) It does not matter how low you sink to come out with offensive comments just for the sake of venting or being offensive, Muslims will continue to do what we do, so save your time and do something else.

Those of you who are criticizing this Sheikh, have to know that you are judging him according to your morals and religious and cultural background. His behavior comes from his religious background. Do you expect all the people to behave as they do in your own country and religion? You have to understand people don't have the same cultures and religions. Just choose your own way of life; and let him choose his way of life. To explain why it is like that in Islam is to minimize flirtation of not related opposite genders. In the West those who work together end up having affairs after a while (not all, but many); because of being too close to each other. That is why you have programs like CHEATERS in many parts of the world. Some of you would find a way to insult this man if he had encouraged men and said go hug every woman. Some of you would have said he is S*xually frustrated Muslim. In short don't criticize what you don't know about!

How can they afford to consider the offenses that will be imagined by you or others when the concern that occupies them is the pleasure of Allah? Why should they transgress the bounds of Allah to please any human being? I was told not to touch anything that was mine by only my parents who raised me, but they (Muslim men) are told not to touch any non-mehram(anyone not blood related) by Allah, their Creator. Why should they be put to shame for listening to their Creator instead of the customs of your culture which change according to times?

Not shaking hands isn't a sign of disgust or distaste for the opposite gender. On the contrary, it's an important part of keeping a professional and respectable relationship with the opposite sex.

It's nice that he presented the topic in a funny manner through story but it shouldn't prevent you from questioning what he's saying. This is why so many muslims twist the message thinking women are inferior to men. You cannot shake hands with a woman? for what? If you are the one who is afraid of temptation through a shake hand, you should control your thoughts before your actions. And then he says his wife got jealous. For what? A strong woman should not feel the need to get jealous over a hug. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. Did you hear about India's tv presenter Gauhr Khan being slapped my a man in the crowd named Akil Malik? He was teasing and heckling her from the crowd and when she protested he got up on stage and slapped her later defending himself saying her outfit was too revealing. She was wearing a long dress that was body fitting and he found himself having bad thoughts. Even if he didn't slap her, he still had those thoughts. Thats HIS problem, not hers. So he needs to change the way he thinks and realize his thoughts are inappropriate. Islam shouldnt be a way of controlling women because men cannot change the way they think.

It is not abt temptation, is abt the do's and the don'ts of the religion. As every religion has some obligations. so as islam.
@stephaniekolam9105
@stephaniekolam9105 9 жыл бұрын
Halima Omer It is about temptation Halima, that is why a handshake with a woman is a "don't". Why else would it be a don't? You need to know why there are obligations in Islam. Not giving handshakes to a female is not protecting a woman, it is just reflecting through a simple thing how the culture finds women to be a weakness of men and are a threat to the point where they cant even give a handshake.

I see what you're saying but if there is no physical action, it decreases temptation. Also regarding the guy who slapped his wife, the Quran states that light disciplinary action may be used in EXTREME cases only where it is the only way to better the situation. If it won't better it, then it should be avoided all together. What this guy did is just straight up abuse and will be judged on the day of judgement. I know what you're thinking is that violence of any sort shouldnt be allowed, and i agree. But even these "extreme" cases will practically never happen and unfortunately many muslim men abuse their power. I am a 20 year old muslim BTW if it helps you in conjuring a response

steph George Hi steph, I would just like to clarify that this rule goes both ways. Saying men can't shake hands with women, whilst not saying that women aren't allowed to shake hands with men leaves out an important point that both men and women are not allowed to touch each other unless they are related or married. Since it is known women also have sexual desires towards men, especially in today's age this is much more vocal. In addition to your argument of "Men should control their desires, it is not the women fault" Well yes you are right, again this goes two ways for women, women need to control their desires towards men. However this argument is the same as saying that "I shouldn't lock the door of my house, or install a burglar system since it's the thieves fault, he should not be a thief he should control his desires to steal or get a job, its not my fault". This way you will surely be robbed. Yes we teach people to not steal, just as in Islam we teach men to lower their gaze and hold their desires from women, but the simple fact of the matter is that people will still steal and people will still show these desires. Therefore it is better and safer for a women and a man to cover themselves up and not touch each other as a sign of respect such those feelings and touches don't lead to anything else. Which science proves all it takes is a girl to touch your leg or a man touch your hip for sexual temptations to triple even quadruple. In addition to this there is no reason nor need for a women to show her goods, so other men can stare at her? Enjoy her? Now she's being objectified, the fact of the matter is that this happens whether it's the man's fault or not, therefore we teach women in Islam this fact of life and tell them it is better if they cover themselves so that they are dignified and respected and not objectified. Hope that clarified for you.

Ok let me ask you this. If a woman puts her hand before me, waiting for me to shake hands with her and i said no, do you really think she will be ok with it? If i tell her no i dont shake hands with females because its haram in islam, dont you think she will get embarrassed and hate me and islam for that? ... I mean ... she is putting her hand out to shake mine out of respect and i deny her that. Do you really think saying no at that moment would bring more good than harm to both of us? Wallahi i dont think that hadith is meant for people in this generation cause it all depends on your Niyya (intention) if your intention contains lust then the hadith applies to you but if it doesnt like most of the people today then i dont think the hadith applies. What do you think?

Sorry for not responding in a long time but ... here is my response. Once, my sister (who was about 19 at the time) met my father's friend so she put her hand out to shake hands but he denied. After they finished and she went home, she told me how that made her feel and how embarrassed and upset she was. I personally had a similar experience. When i came back from travel accompanied by my mother, we met the neighbor, she was a 40-50 year old woman (i was 17 at that time). My mother greeted her and shook her hand so i went to do the same. The woman was startled and was not pleased at all ... at the moment i didnt know how to react cause this was the first time i was exposed to this personally. I felt the exact way my sister felt which is not a good feeling. Despite the fact that i know she meant all good, i still felt as if she didnt want to shake hands with me because i was some kind of nagis or unclean. Id rather take the middle ground. I wont actively get out of my way to shake a woman' hand but if she put her hand out i would not reject it. Because i know how it feels. A girl in a university i was studying in knew i usually dont shake hands with girls but she accidentally put her hand out out of impulse (i know it was accidental because she quickly retracted it). I didnt want to enforce the same idea (i had about my neighbor) that she would have on me.

You don't see how the reaction of the wife, preparing to leave the house to assault another woman who she knows nothing about over a misunderstanding, can be called angry and messed up? I think that threatening to physically assault someone who did nothing violent to you is indeed angry and messed up. What is wrong with it is threatening violence to someone who was not violent. Repaying kindness with violence is wrong. That's my viewpoint and I stand by it.

I'm sorry MrTrott2hot, I made a slight mistake about not telling the truth when it comes to your life. Here is the ruling when it comes to not telling the truth (Taqiyah): 1) Taqiyah is done for safety reasons. For example, a person fears that he might be killed or harmed, if he does not observe Taqiyah. In this case, it is obligatory to observe Taqiyah.

The imprecation against hugging the opposite sex is unnecessary; clearly the main issues here are how to deal with men's sexuality and objectifying mind set; if men treated women as sisters, which one is encouraged to do in Islam, then hugging should prove no obstacle.

The men do it too and yes I know, #notallmen but at the same #notallwomen. And if you're someone still in the struggle of following the religion, like trying your best to learn but not wearing the hijab yet, you're literally called a whore by 'Muslim' men. And far too many of them, both men and women, are bound by their hypocrisies to see that wrongs right in front of them. I agree with you, just that it would've been a bit nicer to say many Muslims and not just target the sisters. Sorry if I have offended you.

When Yunus (A.S) preached to his people and they wouldn't listen he finally left them. He performed his duty to preach, but because we was expected to have higher patience Allah (SWT) made the whale swallow him and then he asked for forgiveness as well, but not because he sinned, but because he did not want to have his status with Allah (SWT) to be degraded. I think you mentioned at the end which is that they commit mistakes.

The way i get out of shaking hands with women is to simply say "Im sorry, I don't shake hands with women for Religious reasons." They normally feel slightly offended to which i follow up and say "We believe that only your Husband has the right to touch you" I can't count the number of times that the woman felt so special and empowered when you say that. Very rarely have i had to explain more. Especially in today's society when women are portrayed as pieces of meat and not people.
