My favourite example is the show 'Heroes', which had a specific arc planned from the very beginning where almost all the characters were replaced every season so we could watch the over arc of events on the planet. But season 1 was so wildly popular that the studio got the authors to completely discard their plans, which would have called for the show to end, and instead extend the existing characters on and on. And it immediately went into the toilet.
