Could it be that a US Submarine was so successful during the Second World War that a submarine crew sank a Japanese train? Well, yes... It’s not like the submarine blew the train from the water…. But what happened is an incredible story of how the crew of the USS Barb, the most successful American submarine of the war, landed men behind enemy lines and completed a textbook act of sabotage, and revolutionized submarine warfare twice in one patrol.

@@Keegan_Carter Im sorry but the animation for the train is so awfully done, the drive rods are clipping through the cylinders, the tender isn't where it should be, the models are not accurate at all to what was used on japanese rail lines, just...so many issues and inaccuracies....none of these history channels ever manage to get trains right. tanks, ships, and aircraft yes, but trains? for some reason they're considered an afterthought...

In person, all those years later - he was EXACTLY how he was portrayed in both books....you can see why his crew was Absolutely Dedicated to this Man. He told me HIMSELF of the Sunken Train - describing the Train Cars being blown Sky High! As you can imagine, it was one of the greatest personal encounters of my life. Fun fact: During his time as skipper of the submarine USS Barb, Lt. Commander Eugene Fluckey would reward his crew after a successful attack with a large cake that usually depicted their target sinking into a sea of frosting. On at least one instance, a Japanese sailor rescued from one of Barb’s victims was offered the first slice and allowed to cut the cake.

I actually met Admiral Fluckey nearly 30 years ago, and my copy of Thunder Below is signed by him to me. Of all the books I own, it is the one I consider unreplaceable. I highly recommend the book to anyone who hasn't read it. I was pleased to see the inclusion in the video of a rocket attack by the Barb, as the rocket launcher was added to the sub only for it's final wartime deployment, and is another unique piece of the history of the Barb.

Last Christmas my wife's cousin gave us several books on WWII US Navy actions that had belonged to her father who had been a PT boat gunner in the South Pacific. One of these books was THUNDER BELOW, written by Admiral Flukey. The book recounts the many amazing adventures of the USS Barb and is an incredible read. Your recreation of the train incident closely follows the book's narrative. I highly recommend this nonfiction work to anyone. You won't be bored.

@bkjeong4302
@bkjeong4302 10 ай бұрын
That wasn’t why Shinano was converted to a carrier. In December 1941 the Japanese revamped their naval construction plans to put all further battleship construction on hold for now (this was shortly after Force Z); Yamato was already fully operational and Musashi had been launched at this point, but Shinano was still a very long way off from completion, so it was decided that they’d build her only to the point she could be launched so the dock she was in could be used for something else, and then decide what to do with her later. And then Midway happened. Now, Japan actually had a surprising number of carriers (including their two best carriers) in the field and a number of carriers under construction or planned ahead of time even before Midway, so Midway wasn’t actually this complete destruction of Japanese carrier power that people sometimes think it was (they didn’t even get rid of that many pilots-that was during Guadalcanal later on). But they still figured that this was as good an excuse as any to turn Shinano into a carrier.

He did an amazing job and it’s just a train that has nothing to do with the story so it’s about the people in it and how it happened so He did a great job modeling everything your the best KZbinr and I watch every video you post and try to comment nice things so have a good day😊

Great video as always Yarnhub! Video suggestion: years ago i read about a convoy heading to the soviet union that was attacked. One of the cargo ships unloaded it's Sherman tanks and used them as deck guns. I can't remember the convoy designation or ships name unfortunately. Maybe you could. The merchant marines were and are amazing people. First US casualties of WW2 before we were officially involved after all

That was an amazing video, and the Ocean Eleven theme was a brilliant added touch. The train video should the Great Train Robbery in 1963 with £2,3 million looted (£38M $4.9M USD today) in Buckhamshire?

Very good. The Ocean's 11 meets Kelly's Heroes vibes in this episode were really amazing! The info graphic style like used in your Blitz videos was a nice touc as well.

Yeah while this is still a great story people forget that numerous British subs blew up/shot trains in the Med, so Barb is hardly the only one (but definitely unique for it being on Japan)

Could this be the first actual submarine vid from Yarnhub? I think so other than the mini-sub vs Tirpitz, another great video! I wonder what next week's about? More subs? Air battles? Maybe even the ground battles I've been wanting to see. Oh well, we'll just have to wait

Awesome story. I had never known that Americans an actually set foot on the Home islands and caused havoc there. Outstanding actions for the crew of the Barb and the silent service.

Yarnhub really outdid themselves with this one, from what I’ve seen this is the first time they have animated a locomotive and it’s accurate. It would have been really fitting if the locomotive was a D51 type because it would be in service during the war (service life: 1936 - 1951) but despite this is the first train animation I’ve seen, it’s very well done.
