When A Tree Fails: Working Around Danger Trees

I was working on a fire in steep country, doing hoselay around the east flank and I saw a huge tree nearby as it was limited visibility from smoke, I turned my back for a second and then when I turned back the tree was gone, I never heard it or felt the ground shake. The roots had burned out and the tree had no support so it fell into the slope. Luckily I was in steep terrain

Another safety issue is ego.

Trees are big weeds and when not properly safety pruned and then allowed to grow into oversized lethal weapons disasters are inevitable 😉
