The story of U-505's capture is amazing, but the Allied plan to avoid U-boats with shops made of ice is just... exactly why I love mid-century history! U-505 is at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which is well worth a visit.

I'm trying to figure out what music I can use, so today it's Lake Lamode from Super Mario Odyssey by Shiho Fujii. Any suggestions on safe sources for music, let me know in the comments!

I'm 78 and grew up within walking distance of the Museum. I can remember watching them move the U-505 from Lake Michigan across the Outer Drive at night to get it to where it first lay outside the museum. For many years admission to the Museum was free and I spent many a day going through the various exhibits including the sub and coal mine.

I'd never heard of this channel before but subscribe to things like Technology Connections, Scott Manley, Astrum, Aging Wheels, TechMoan, The History Guy, and a bunch of other stuff like that. I saw the "Vintage Space Is Back" video a few days ago and wondered if it was space, like outer space, or space as in "this room is a space full of vintage stuff." It's about old space stuff! And I'd totally watch videos about air espionage. Cold war tech is ridiculously cool. I'm not surprised there are trolls, though.

I revisited the Museum of Science and Industry about two years ago. The new exhibition of the U-505 was spectacular! I remember as a child in the 1970's that we would go there every year (living 30 miles away). Way back then the U-505 was outside and you accessed it through the hole cut in the side of the hull. It was cold, damp and had rust stains inside from the leaks caused by the rain. I was fortunate to have a manager who once was a mechanic on a U boat during the war; He had been taken as a POW and after the war ended he was repatriated back to Germany, only to apply for immigration status and US citizenship. He would speak sometimes about the difficulties of maintaining U boat engines while on long patrols.

Shared bunks. We referred to that as “hot racking”. You essentially were sharing EVERY bodily fluid imaginable with your bunk mates. Remember fresh and even grey water is a luxury aboard ships especially then. So there was no laundry (especially for enlisted). The inside of that beautiful museum piece was how that boat looked when it was first pushed into the ocean. An hour after it was fueled and manned everything painted white started to yellow. It was was and is amazing how the submariners (sometimes referred to as bubble heads) lived and worked. Great video Amy and so glad to see you back.

The father of one of my supervisors in the Air Force was a civilian electrician, and helped build the Bismarck. Later his job was to help build the new type XXl U-Boat. He and others in the factory near Hamburg were afraid that this new sub would just lengthen the war, so the began to find “problems” with the construction of the subs. For him it was to create electrical issues to delay the deployment of the new U-Boat. Only 5 type XXl’s made it into service.

After I moved to Jacksonville Florida in 2001 around that time that's when they decide to move the 505 into a new facilities that was going to be partially underground. The story of the capture of the u-boats is a very interesting story that they should make a movie of. It was the first enemy vessel that we captured since 1812. Congratulations Amy for going to the science and industry and seeing how wonderful that museum is. The next time you go to the museum Amy please take the time to see Apollo 8.

Welcome back! I went to the Museum of Science and Industry many times over the years and I recall seeing U505 when it was outside, when I heard that they had moved it inside and restored it I went back and it was indeed very impressive. My favorite thing about it was during the restoration the museum tried to track down missing parts and ultimately reached out to the German companies that worked on the sub originally as many were still around in various forms. Hoping to get information about parts and equipment they were surprised when almost all of the companies not only agreed to provide data but many also provided artifacts and or recreated parts for the museum to use in the restoration.

Thank you for sharing the research for the ship made of ice. It’s quite a fascinating reminder that not all research projects come to live, and not necessarily due to their own failure.

Nice!!! So enjoy your content and format. Vintage is vintage and we can’t forget where we came from - how many memories of endeavors are lost to the speed of today’s innovation- yet just like fashion - old ideas are renewed again and revisited with the latest technology.

WOW! My family stayed at Patricia Lake Bungalows in 2005. I had no idea what lurked below while my daughter & I canoed around the shoreline.

Hard to imagine U-Boats so close to the US off the East Coast, in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico but they were there lurking ready to strike.

Fascinating stories! I didn't realize a U-boat was in a museum. And I'd heard of the ice ships but didn't know the details. So great to to have you back, Amy! Keep it up!
