We had the chance to join the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Gulf as it launched its planes on operations against the Islamic State terror group in Syria. It's exactly the type of operation Britains twin aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, could perform when they enter service in the next few years...

Due to its flexibility and portability, the Navy is probably flying more actual combat missions with more aircraft on the average day than the Air Force. This does not imply they are bigger, just more portable.

Great video. I served on this ship from 90-94 in an F-18 squadron (VFA-15) as a Parachute Rigger. Working nights, there were a ton of night sorties all the time. I’m still amazed at how refined operations were and carried out. It was a well oiled machine. Everything had a specific process. Glad to have had the experience.

Years ago I was out salmon fishing in British Columbia. An old US Destroyer came up the sound. Canada buys a lot of old US military stuff. You cannot get an appreciation for how big these ships are until you see them from water level. This Destroyer was massive, yet 1/3rd to 1/2 the size of a carrier. Don't look from a dock. Get in a small boat and look up.

It is really nice the Free World has these carriers, I think they won the War in the pacific. But I sure could not do this type of duty and I was a ranger in the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell. I consider this a very high Hardship duty on this type of ship. Thank you to anyone who is serving or has served on one of these, you gotta be superpeople.

My Cousin a Captain USN Retired Naval Aviator, second to last assignment was to serve as the Navigator of one of these Floating Air Bases. He always says it was the best experience of his over 25 years of Service. He had many Cruises on Carriers as an Aviator during his time, but the responsibility of actually plotting it's movement was the most rewarding.
