I use sponge and box filters, with two sponge filters in each tank, and the box filters as supplemental filtration. The sponge filters I clean one at a time, and once in a while clean it under tap water. In my box filters, I keep a layer of sponge in the bottom that stays there while I change the media and filter floss. I have given up on HOB filters as every one that I have used has pumped water on the floor, even when clean.
