you don't know with which verbs to use "essere" and with which, instead, to use "avere" as an auxiliary? No problem, let's see it together!
We use "essere" as an auxiliary:
Of itself→ Sono stato a Roma ieri.
With verbs of movement (andare, venire, partire, tornare, arrivare…) → Sono andata al supermercato questa mattina. / Mario è partito poco fa.
With state verbs (nascere, morire, ingrassare, dimagrire, rimanere, stare…) → Dante Alighieri è nato a Firenze. / Siamo ingrassati a causa delle prelibatezze della nonna!
With reflexive verbs → Mi sono svegliata alle 7 stamattina.
With impersonal verbs → E’ successa una cosa fantastica!
We use "avere" as an auxiliary in all other cases!
Examples:
Ho mangiato un tiramisù delizioso in quel bar.
Davide ha avuto una promozione al lavoro.
Abbiamo fatto una gita a Matera lo scorso weekend.
Leonardo da Vinci ha dipinto La Gioconda.
Avete mandato l’e-mail al professore?
ATTENTION!
The verbs correre, passeggiare, nuotare, camminare, pattinare... require the auxiliary "avere"! In fact, even if they involve a sort of movement, it's not movement "from one place to another"!
Examples:
Ieri ho corso tutto il giorno!
Abbiamo passeggiato lungo via Condotti.
Sembrate stanchi: avete camminato molto?
