Sounds like they didn't test the engine in neutral! Maybe a tip, you can buy a kind of stethoscope to locate mechanical noise on engines. It look like a doctor's stethoscope but with a kind of metal stick on the other end. They are cheap but can be a great help, noise can be very hard to trace. An engine like the one you have should have a very long life if properly taken care of. One more benefit of these mechanical engines is that they will "tell" you if there's some kind of a problem, in the sense that the noise has changed, may become harder to start, have less power or start to smoke more. If you notice a sudden change in behaviour, do not ignore these signals, and get help before it is ruined.

In my experience and listening to others, its usually the little auxiliary things that break or need attention not the big stuff. If you don't have a repair manual of your engine and its component parts find one. The more you look and work in the engine bay the less intimidating it will be and you can begin to see how all the parts work to make the thing go. KZbin has saved me a ton of money more than once, if you are having an issue there is most likely a video that explains how to fix the problem. And don't ignore the maintenance schedule. Open that engine bay once a day and just look in there, you will have some aha moments now and then, very rewarding. Cheers.

Thank you for another great episode. I watch because I love boats. But actually, I also love people and especially those who work on themselves and take hold of their life in a constructive way by living in the present. You're an example to many. Thank you. I hope you get your gearbox sorted. ... When I bought my 84 ft Dutch barge my gearbox died on the first journey and on the way to my home mooring. It died as I entered a lock filled with little plastic boats. I was unable to stop by reversing and it could've been a very serious accident if my crew hadn't acted very quickly by jumping ashore and slowing us down to stop. Blessings to you, May.

Wow what an episode you have given us this week ! One big advantage you seem to have on your wonderful boat, is the huge access there is around the Engine. That should save a lot of time ( and money) when you have work done on it. Having seen you and your Mum punting along the canal you don’t seem to need an engine at all ( A larger dog may be , who could then take the place of a canal Horse and pull you along ). Hope all goes well with finding more work in the future. I gave up a full time job to go Freelance ( with very little in place) . Amazingly things worked out in time , and nearly 30 years later I was able to retire . Im very glad I made the decision to Jump Ship . As they say ‘When One Door Closes another One Opens ). Im sure you have a bright future. Very glad to hear it may only be the Gear box that want replacing.Having seen and heard your mum in action we don’t have to wonder where you get your expressive language from 😅 Let it out Girl ….. and look at all that extra fire wood !

Love your approach to the setback. You are not denying reality. In fact, looking at the worse possible case. But also choosing how you react to it and keeping things in perspective, focusing on the things you do have that are good. Oh wow May, when I heard that bang when the engine stopped I shuddered, and the clonk when you tried to restart it I feared the worst case scenario which I think you did as well. I am always amazed at your cheerfulness in the face of problems. I hope it is just the gearbox, a lot cheaper than an engine and a lot easier to change. May - another great video - and engines do not have to be intimidating but you do have to be methodical. A lot of narrow boat engines are either based on car engines in the case of petrol or industrial/stationary engines in the case of diesel and each have a basic check list of how to identify and cure problems. Braking it down into groups such as ignition, fuel and mechanical helps but also basic maintenance such as keeping on top of fluids and filters as you showed in your fuel filter video. Sadly boat engines do get a hard life and the forces put through them will ask a lot of things like crankshaft bearings, gearbox gears and other bearings. The GOOD NEWS is that a lot of these engines are quite simple and, in the case of car based ones, some parts are not expensive. The challenge is working on them. So if its your gearbox then you have to get access to it then take it off to inspect, refurb, rebuild and replace. My gut says that "new engine" is not on the cards but the focus needs to be on things like labour as the taking out, working on and replacing is going to be a significant part of the bill. As someone once said to me "if someone made it then someone can re-make it" -- its not a Swiss watch May and most of the parts are big and butch. One final thing - and referring back to the labour part. If it turns out to be, say, a gearbox bearing, or some single part then replace all similar parts as they may be nearing end of life quite soon after - no sense spending on all that labour to only do again in a few months or a years time. I wish you luck and if positivity could be currency you could afford a Rolls-Royce engine for your boat -- good fortune to you!

Running a few minutes and dieing, could be related to the air breather, fuel filter, fuel vent, or fuel pump, any or all. It recovers and starts as the fuel flow temporarily returns after the air / fuel mixture is restored.

An easy check: something in the propeller. I had a bungee down there that was making noises and would randomly stop the engine when it would catch on things. The starter may also be busted.

Hello May sweetie! I feel for you, your engine wows but I think I heard a sound from your video, I recognize, oil feed lines internally, get blocked, from my experience, that’s often been the case! I live on a trawler yacht in Poole harbour, up by the Wareham estate! I do all the coast, great fish & cleaner air. Love it. Experience and a set of mental (or written down) check lists helps - and I'm no engine mechanic either, but have managed to diagnose some things with just working through a set of checks. Not for you to make I'm sure given the engine issues - and for not going "sod the film making" while dealing with it, but lovely video!

Gearboxes are cheaper than a replacement engine. I thought that I needed a replacement engine for my Kaboto/Kioti tractor (3 cylinder 15HP diesel). I bought an used one (less than 1000 hrs), just in case, for $900 US in 2015... After it came, my old engine sounded just fine. Changed the oil and NO metal bits. Life was good... I sent you some coffee... Bob

Sounds like you have either clogged filters or a collapsing robber fuel pipe when under load 😊😊or a crack in a fuel line thats sucking air 😮😊or trouble with the fuel lift pump ,its a deisel so if its getting proper fuel it shoul run and how many hours on the engine ,dont forget there are many who will take advantage of an un knowing woman

Glow plugs? Diesel bug?..fuel filter? Cooling system (overheating)..I know you already checked oil...Faulty sensors, fuel injectors? (Get some injector cleaner!)

Engine problems are a nightmare if your not used to working on them. My personal experiance with RCR has not been great and wouldn't trust their diagnosis. They have a partner company that deals with replacing engine and have heard stories of engines being replaced that didn't need to be. As I said this is just my personal view of them, no doubt you will have seen positive and negative comments about them in other forums. Glad you got some other independent views on your issue and its sorted at minimal expense. Only just come across your vlog, so I've a bit of catching up to do.

I vote for that. 🙂 But yikes, taking your frustrations out by violently hitting and chopping things (without eye and hand protection) might not be the best way (and not protecting the dog as well). Being violent is not always the best option to deal with feelings, no? Better to deal with the problem. How about asking a friend to tow your boat to a boat yard? Or hiring your boat towed. Is that possible? As a retired diesel mechanic, I suspect I know what the problem is but diagnosing over the internet isn't smart! 🙂 And I've still not caught up with your vlogs, so I could read ahead and see if I'm right, but that's not appropriate either. I do see many more vlogs ahead of this date so I know you got this fixed ... good for you. Another cup of tea!!! 🙂
