Mike drove over from the Chicago area this week to share 5 guitars with us. This is the first video featuring one of these guitars. None of his guitars are necessarily for sale, he just wanted to bring them by to share them with the world.

I had never heard of an offset telecaster before seeing this one, but I've got to say, I can dig it. It is a weird guitar. I didn't really get the chance to play it for very long, but my first thoughts were, the body shape is a little awkward to sit with, but it felt good on a strap. The strat fin and belly cutaway are nice features to have on this guitar that improve upon some of the faults of the original telecaster design.
This particular run of offset telecasters was a limited edition run from Chicago Music Exchange. In fact, if you're looking at purchasing one of these from CME - this is the EXACT guitar they used for the stock photos to represent them all! Mike said this one had the darkest finish out of the 3 he tried at the store, so despite being a floor-model, he decided to get this one.
There was a little bit of a mishap at check out though! This is when buying a new guitar goes wrong... he grabbed the wrong case and left the store. After realizing what he had done, he took that other guitar back and got his rightful guitar.
This offset tele has Tim Shaw designed V-Mod Series pickups, maple neck and alder body with a walnut finish

I love this kind of guitar. I built myself a Telemaster a few years ago in butterscotch blonde with Texas Special pups and it's become my favorite Fender style guitar. Sooooo much more comfy than a true Tele but with all the grunt. I recommend it to everyone.

All said and done on my end, it was probably around $750. Warmoth body, Mexican Fender neck, locking Fender tuners, Reverb pickups. I do my own wiring and setup so no shop costs on top. I really wanna try one of these American made Telemasters though, they've got a different neck feel than the neck I have (and a proper setup and fret leveling!)

I Frankensteined a guitar, too - the body is one of those way-heavier-than-an-Explorer late 70s Hondo 2 Iceman copies, and the neck is from an early 70s Epiphone 335 type. Binding all around, nice mother-of-pearl Epiphone logo and block markers, Gotoh hardware, pickups are Ibanez IBZ bridge and V1 neck (honestly, the V1 sounds considerably better than the IBZ). A gigging musician offered me $400 for it and I turned him down.

The Fender offset is the most comfortable body shape if you are going with something classic. I even prefer it to a modern SG, but only by a hair. These guitars are brilliant because you get those classic Tele sounds without the annoying feeling that you're playing a brick.

I was really excited when these were first announced, and came close to pre-ordering one. I called CME because I was concerned that the stock photos on their site (this exact guitar) showed major color discrepancy in the three slabs that make up the body. The sales rep personally went to their warehouse to check multiple guitars to see if he could find a more uniform example, then graciously told me they all kinda have the same issue. I couldn't commit to this guitar, but I walked away very impressed with CME.

Most of the time, hybrids between two well known models can be a harsh sight, but this looks great. Tele features with the god tier ergonomics of the jm body works on so many levels . I would go with a bigger headstock though, the large body makes the tele one look tiny.

My favorite Fender is a Telecaster. I have one that's the only Fender I keep in my "core collection". It's a Ralph Macchio "Crossroads" style, blonde, white gaurd with maple fretboard. I do like this guitar though. I must admit that I'm still kicking around getting one.

blister Michel perhaps, but lame movie in regards to the "myth" - "legend" of crossroads tale. Was a standard Tele, vs. Steve Vai n his custom Ibanez. Who hasn't seen a standard Tele? Trogly was showing a rare, odd,-- how does that compare to a standard Tele ? ok, maybe a newbie , but still should find a better idol, reference, if wants to play.
@9wenwilson210
@9wenwilson210 6 жыл бұрын
blister Michel well, upon thought, if that motivates him to play, explore, good. just lots other ways to be influenced, inspired from my point of view. I been playing, gigging ,etc for many years. That movie is 20 plus years old, so maybe "vintage" in others eyes. I apologize - whatever it takes to want to play - each his own path.

Offsetecaster. As a Telecaster fan I think it's very cool looking - the single coil pickup looks better than the humbucker, that adds too much visual weight to the neck side of the body, but I wish they'd stop mounting Tele neck pickups through the scratchplate - I always liked that look of mystery when they were fixed to the body with the scratchplate then put on top. And I hate the comfort contour cut-outs, Tele players are used to feeling a slab under their arm, some of us like that reassuring feeling. But then, maybe it's aimed to appeal to Jazzmaster/Jaguar players who like the Tele sound...

Don't get me wrong I like fenders but I doubt I will ever buy another one after what I went through with mine. In 2017 I ended up ordering a Fender Jim Root telecaster since the only music store around me didn't have it. It showed up in 2 days and looked great. But the pickups in it weren't working at all and I changed the battery as well for the emg's but still wouldn't work. So I sent it back and got another one. This one the volume was cutting out, the pickups were wired backwords, and the frets were extremely sharp... So I contacted the company again and got another one. And this one showed up looking great, with the electronics working properly but the hardshell case had 2 latches busted... So I just gave up fighting them and accepted this one. Other than that and sharp frets it was fine. But for paying about 1200 after taxes you'd expect the guitar to have the wiring checked, the pots checked, the fretwires taken care of, and make sure the case was wrapped up well also. So all in all I probably wouldn't order another fender...

Despite liking offset guitars and loving teles, this guitar wasn't doing it for me. However after coming back to look at the post again, it has kinda grown on me. Walnut is a beautiful wood (just bought a Gibson J-15 acoustic). I imagine it looks much nicer in person. Thanks for the video and everyone have a great day! (P.S. the compensated old style tele bridge is a good idea...has any one had experience with them?)

Dash Riprock it’s definitely a weird axe, but i’m a firm believer in actually playing a guitar to form an opinion unless you’re solely basing it on looks. I own a magnificent 7 offset tele and this walnut colored one, and as far as teles go for me I will always put compensated saddles on teles from now on. It makes a world of difference past the 12th fret or on open strings.

Thanks for the info and I must agree Stranger Days ...ya gotta play it. It's funny how some guitars just have that feel and say "play me"...and more often than not it's individualized from player to player.

I dont really think tele’s were popular based on their looks, at least for me, Ive always thought they were “butt-ugly”, until my younger brother Ted let me play an American “pro” mahogany tele... man..., it sounded BEAUTIFUL & played the same way.... I WISH I would have never handed it back to him, but I didnt realize what I was holding till several years (and tele’s) later! I believe now that it was one of those “magical” guitars.... live & learn..

Very cool! I reckon it should have the Jazzmaster headstock, though; The Tele one looks tiny with this rather large body shape.

Is the camera playing tricks or are those strings spaced unevenly? The D and G strings look far apart, while the B and high E strings look close together. If that is in fact the case, I'd want to correct those soon before the saddles get grooves in the wrong spots...
