Funny how he gets on other ppl for not providing hiding spaces for centipedes yet… moss and substrate is just the same. No cork, wood nothing to hide under but substrate.
@BugsandBiology9 ай бұрын
Peat/sand is a substrate that retains moisture and is firm enough to hold a burrow. Meanwhile Exotics Lair was keeping them on what were essentially bark chips.

About 30x20cm. Will likely rehouse her soon as she put on a lot of size in a recent molt. She's about 16cm now.

Well trigintiduoguttata literally means 32 spotted in Latin. :D

Yeah that's what I suspected. I never learned Latin, but I noticed "tri" (three), "duo" (two) and "guttata" which I belive refers to spots.

I noticed that your tool of choice during this process was your trusty paint brush. Is the reason for using the brush instead of tweezers to not stress them more? The paint brush keeps them at a distance. If the babes decide to corroperate.
@BugsandBiology3 жыл бұрын
For pedes that size, metal tongs can be potentially dangerous as they can crush them. Also the cold surface of metal seems to freak pedes out.

@StopStealingMyNameTrolls3 жыл бұрын
When you are doing a re-housing why don't you just poor the entire content of the small container over into the bigger container? As a burrower species it's not that they would be crushed by the substrate or that they couldn't dig themselves a tunnel back to the surface. It's not worth the risk that they flee or eventually even bite you. I am just curious why take the risk at all if not necessary. :D
@StopStealingMyNameTrolls3 жыл бұрын
Also I really wish somebody could find a reliable method to define the sex/gender of each centipede individually... Cause as far as I know they are a bit like most skink species, that means that we still have no reliable and fast techniques to find out which animal is male and which one is a female.
@griffinc32633 жыл бұрын
Yeah, with most species you have to knock them out and squeeze them... I probably won't have the guts to do that on my massive rubripes. Although with some species, such as Scolopendra morsitans, the males have ridges on their terminal legs.
