I remember every bit of this season. This season is like a Netflix or Prime Documentary for Chelsea fans. New Manager, Torres Miss, 7/8th in the league in mid season, AVB sacked, Chelsea vs Napoli (the day the magic began), RDM and his Park the Bus, Fa Cup win, 1-0 vs Barca at home, Cisse's Wonder goal takes us off the top 4, the night at Barca from JTs red card, Messi and his penalty miss and The night Torres went from Flop to legend, We win at Munich, Drogba Leaves. People say it's luck, maybe it is, but the players deserved it. RDM played 8 matches in the span of 3 weeks including Fa Cup semis, league and UCL semis and won us both. The squad of veterans was overworked. I still get overwhelmed and emotional when I remember these moments!

I was talking to my mate who is a Chelsea fan about this the other day. He said that if Chelsea win the champions league this summer he will feel almost cold to it because he feels no real connection to the side, whereas that Chelsea team was iconic. A squad with spine of ageing hero’s with a couple new young players rounded out with misfits it was a side that had characters that you remember.
@arindambaruah54193 жыл бұрын
It will be just as special to win it this year especially considering the youth of the squad. Contrary to the 2012 side, this team has very young hungry players in their early 20s with some really experienced players in the form of Thiago Silva, Azpi, Giroud and a few more. These players have the chance to be the same iconic characters and for potentially a long long time at the Bridge. Whatever be the result, this squad is on a rise and will only get better. The 2012 squad was at its peak or just past it with nearly every iconic player in their 30s.
@619ck1543 жыл бұрын
@@arindambaruah5419 I’m not a Chelsea fan so I can’t speak on it. My mates feeling was that if Lampard was still in charge and that youth that debuted last season were all still mainstays then it would be different. Obviously Mount and James are still key but Tamori has gone out on loan Tammy has basically been made out to be third choice, Odoi hasn’t kicked on to be a starter and Gilmour has played less games than he did last year. There are players like Alonso, Dave and Kante who have been there are long time half the starting XI are new players half of whom have been inconsistent and cost Lampard his job. They could go on to have great careers at Chelsea and forge that connection but 6 months just isn’t enough time for him personally to feel that way

always grinds my gears when i see bitter rival fans on twitter saying chelsea won the champions league "accidentally" or "by luck". this was a feat achieved by a very determined and close-knit group of players, many of whom were nearing the ends of their careers and knew that this would be their absolute last chance at winning the biggest prize in europe. they had come agonizingly close many times in the past decade, but they had never been able to make that final push, either due to poor refereeing (think liverpool's "ghost goal" or the 1-1 against barcelona) or bad luck (think terry's missed penalty against man utd in the 2008 final). to see them finally win the trophy, and in such dramatic circumstances, was an achievement that should have been celebrated by all who love football for what it is - a chance for stories to be written and dreams to be reached.

One thing though, the fast paced vertical passing football was brought to Munich by Jupp Heynckes in their treble winning season on the backdrop of this loss and in fact Guardiola just made Bayern's game more possession oriented and slow again. While Liverpool's victory over Milan coming back from 3-0 in 2005 was an incredible night, our run to win that UCL in 2012 remains probably the most romantic UCL run since the turn of the century. Overturning a 3-1 deficit in extra time, edging our way past Benfica with that last minute blitz from Meireles, and David and Goliath situations against arguably the best team of the modern era in Barca with that Torres screamer and then beating Bayern in their own backyard. All that with Bertrand making his CL debut, so many important first team names missing, an extra time penalty, one of the best poachers in the world at the time in Mario Gomez being kept on a leash, of course Drogba's equaliser and his winning penalty in the shootout. I can still vividly remember Schweinsteiger staggering his run-up and hitting the post, and you could tell just how nervous he was with that staggered run-up after he confidently put one away in the shootout against Real in the semis. Football's the best. UEFA and FIFA both have issues that run deep, but the Champions League has offered so many incredibly nights like this, and I can't believe we nearly lost it to the Super League. So glad people spoke up.

I'm Glad this Chelsea team of Drogba, Terry,Lampard and others won the champions league because they really fought hard for this and this 2012 final was their only chance coz most of them were at the edge of their football careers 🎖️⚽🏆😊

Di Matteo. Now there’s a guy who seemingly never got many chances... And was fired quickly when he did.
@benhaney96293 жыл бұрын
I’m not saying he was responsible for their win but you’d think a few more teams would be willing to take the chance that there was some magic in him. He hasn’t had a job in 5 years and I don’t think anyone gave him more than a year before they fired him...

That final really reminded me of the PSG-Bayern first leg, Bayern had so many chances man it was actually hilarious + I think one management error went under the radar which was Heynckes subbing of Thomas Müller after he thought they won the game anyways

This is the winning mentality that Mourinho established all those years ago and stayed with the spine of Chelsea. It was always Chelsea against the world and the players knew what they had to do to win. Such a rare trait these days, everyone needs a system and hand-holding instead of taking responsibility. I hope this new generation of Chelsea knows how to win at all costs like the Chelsea of old

Honestly I think Drogba's equaliser was one of the all time best champions league goals. Such a difficult header but made to look effortless from one of the best strikers of all time

It's mental how Chelsea had so many fringe players that would have great 2 years then leave but in those 2 years they would help Chelsea win titles. Kalou, Molouda, Ramires, Mata, Bosingwa, Miereles, Bertrand etc Whilst having Hazard, cole lampard cech mikel terry for 6-8 years. They were blessed with such a good squad for so long
@spaghettGREATJOB3 жыл бұрын
Mata was very much not a fringe player... he was voted by the Chelsea squad as player of the year and was a big part of why Hazard joined after 2012 (attacking options as a winger and 10 that meant opponents couldn't just focus on stopping Eden in his first season). Juan Mata was AVB's first signing, if I remember right -- he showed his worth almost immediately. This squad had established greats and a lot of really important role players to surround them with a lot of flexibility in tactics and team selection. Also, Kalou and Malouda had been there for a few years at that point, and were regular starters (Ancelotti played the diamond midfield with Drogba/Anelka up top and if he played three up top, it was always Malouda and Kalou on the flanks. Mata, Hazard, and Oscar were the shining light of Chelsea the season after the UCL win and Mata remained an immensely important player until Jose came back and froze him out :(

Before watching I’m guessing the answer. Once RDM shifted Mata to No.10 and put Ramires on the wing, we were able to counter with lightning quickness, and we were more comfortable defending deep. One good ball from Lampard or Mata and we were on the attack.

I’ve met Di Matteo completely by accident at a friends barbecue (they’re quite famous in Italy) I was completely black out drunk and didn’t realise I was speaking to the man who made my childhood, I spoke to him for over an hour waffling about nothing and he asked me about football and which team I support. Obviously I said Chelsea and started speaking about how much di matteo meant to me when I was younger. Little did I know in my blackout state I was speaking to the man himself

@@-et-8934 it's ok to admit luck played a pretty big part in it. If City (my team) were to win the Champions league, they would have been pretty lucky to beat Dortmund after that Bellingham goal being disallowed, cup competitions very rarely go to the best team in the tournament. It would be silly to think Chelsea won the champions league purely out of quality or mental strength when they got an easy QF draw, had Messi miss a pen against them and have robben miss a pen in extra time too. Its not even like they beat Bayern in open play 🤷♂️. At the end of the day it was a magical cup run but it would be a lie to suggest this was even a top 4 side in the tournament
