I'm for RPM helix with a flag on top to be the DGPT standard basket? They should at least have flags and a standard basket and tee pad at the majors. And they will as we continue to grow

Tee pads being used at Music City this week are set to become the tour standard next season. Hopefully baskets are next.

This is a GREAT video that illustrates very well a crucial distinction between a utility patent and a trademark. I teach a class on business models and IP at Imperial College London, and this video will be a required watching next Spring!

Patents are arguably the most disgusting legal invention of mankind. And I feel qualified to say so, as I have taken out two provisional patent specifications for my inventions in the past. I did not take out those patents, as the cost to do so was extreme, and the protection they offer is minimal. Basically, patents are bad for consumers, and work to hold prices high, prevent innovation (Ironic on at least two levels), and they prevent others from using technology which has been in the market for some time. They are despicable, and hurtful in many ways. Let's not raise the subject of Patent Troll companies whose only reason for existence is to punish companies who dare to emulate an existing technology. These days I publish my inventions freely, and require only that attribution is given when using my designs and inventions.

I didn't watch the whole thing or read all comments, but as noted on the School of Disc Golf Blog and in my book, Apple cited Disc Golf Assoc v. Innova Champion as a precedent when they sued Samsung.

I’m so glad dga didn’t win. I avoid playing courses with dga baskets because they don’t catch worth a crap. Innova baskets are where it’s at. 😂

Comments are turned off in your video on gambling in disc golf. Why? Chris, you had a great channel, but your gambling video seemed like an infomercial. If you are taking money to post content, why not be honest and say so. Dude, I thought you had integrity. Now I'm not so sure.

Maybe just use Mach 7's for every DGPT event and let local folks decide on their local course. Or just Mach 7's everywhere since they are the best baskets out there.

The Innova patent should never have been granted, and for a couple of main reasons: 1) There was already prior art in the market. 2) The invention was not "non obvious", and discs had been becoming more streamlined - and this is an obvious development. Any company starting out in DG before 2003 should never have engaged with Innova, but rather waited to be sued, and then destroy the patent itself - which would have been very straightforward with any competent lawyer. In the years of patent protection, there were just 5 new companies making golf discs. But from 2003 onwards, up to 21 companies PER YEAR started making golf discs. And before 2003 fewer than 14 new discs were approved each year, and 2022 saw over 200 new moulds approved! YEAH - patents really suck. And the golf disc patent held the sport (and the game!) back quite badly. Just how badly, we will never know. There is probably no blame to attach to this tragedy: Innova will have been required by venture capitalists to protect what they were doing, so that funding could be obtained. So, we shouldn't hate on Innova - we should simply hate the entire (stupid) patent system.

I agree ... and I still call them frisbees. The same argument about prior art applies to Wham-o and their supposed trademark to the term.

A technical remark. The shape of the chains should be closer to a catenary (a natural shape of a hanging rope). It looks like a parabola, but it's not quite it.
@deepsender5 ай бұрын
Yes, the shape of a hanging chain is a catenary. If the US Patent actually contained the term parabola, which I did not find, then I would think it could have been nullified.

The disc golf pro tour is not successful, here are a few reasons why: players, sponsored by disc manufacturers, make millions of dollars while tournaments, sponsored by the same manufacturers, pay out peanuts! It MUST be the other way around. Disc golf manufacturers don’t have professional courses that are designed for spectators and professional camera crews. Announcers never (rarely ever) mention the disc thrown or its specific weight. Announcers are not experts in announcing! Players carry too many discs. There must be a limit and discs must be weighed before each tour event. Baskets vary from tournament to tournament. There must be a standard basket. The adverts under the basket, those MUST PROMPTLY AND PERMANENTLY BE REMOVED!!! FLAGS ON TOP OF EVETY BASKET SHOULD BE MANDATORY! There are no (almost none) major outside sponsors of tournaments. These are some major problems. Before the tour can attract major sponsors (soft drinks, alcohol, automobile, jewelry, etc.) there must be viewership. In order to increase interest in the sport, pay outs must be much higher. Macbeth got 7 “million$”! That’s “70” 100,000$ payouts! That’s “1” player contract!!! Players need to “earn” their money by winning. Then they can eventually be sponsored by clothing manufacturers or other outside sponsors. Viewers and fans of disc golf must demand that all these and more steps be taken to push our sport to the level it deserves to be at.

I agree the dgpt is not successful, but all your other random comments are just that. You sound far from lucid. Let's puts some quotes around a number, yeah!! 🤣

Ha ha good lord I would love to see you weigh each disc before every tournament of every player. What a S*** show that would be. Seriously if you ever do this at a tournament I will be there just to watch the chaos & 4 hour late start time to weigh every players disc.
