Read the description! Thank you for your support. I really appreciate it. Also, let me know what you think happened. Based on everything that I did, tested, etc., I really think it was the clarifier (Note: I didn't overdose and I've used it before. Maybe it expired?).

Thanks for being honest and uploading anyway. We will all miss them, you're not alone but you were closer to them so heartfelt sorry for your loss. That said, two things I can think of is were they moved to full new water twice during the move? Once into the black bucket and once at the new house? If that isn't what you think it is then the other thing that I myself have dealt with personally is I didn't clean my aquarium because I was moving and removed hard scape to catch fish easier without it. The fish ate up some of the rotted waste when it got released when moving the hard scape and made them sick quickly. The only way to avoid this is a series of thorough water removal to clean around the hard scape before removing it. Pouring the same water bank into the tank you just removed but wait until after it settled and the filth removed gently from the bottom of my bucket, dumped back in, then another go at cleaning around the hard scape with a hand gravel & water meant to pull gunk from the gravel layer during a change. Or completely remove the sand/gravel leaving the fish in. It seems tedious but remember you let the tank go so there's extra debris, is been there a while (over 3 months) and it had time to collect. Either way, this is just a guess, but one I experienced before and killed most my very healthy fish the same way. They seemed fine, ate like normal, then woke up the next day and they were dead. I concluded the bacteria in their system from what they ate became unbalanced in their system. I look forward to seeing the new native fish you'll buy...or if you take the tank in another direction.

I'm late to the party, but I think I know what happened. All the surfaces in an established aquarium are covered with biofilm, and you removed enough to cause a bacterial bloom to repopulate(the cloudy water). That's typically harmless and the water will clear in a few days after the bacteria settle out of the water column on to the new surfaces, but it does use a lot of oxygen. Add to that it's a planted tank at night (plants start using oxygen and releasing co2 at night), there isn't a ton of surface agitation, and many water clarifiers and meds list gasping at the surface as a potential side effect and encourage you to increase surface agitation while you're using them. The fact that the catfish, and smaller fish that would be a bit more tolerant of temporary low oxygen survived is a good indicator too. I think they died from low o2, but I also think that even if you knew everything I just said it would be one of those things you figured out in retrospect. I'm so sorry you lost your guys. It's awful, but I always want to know what happened so I can figure out what to do different next time.
@bobs55965 жыл бұрын
it was def not the water clarifier. you had a very large bioload and no bacteria. the new tank syndrome. i talked with a guy about this incident who worked at the DC nat'l aquarium for 20 years. he said you should have used all the old gravel, the old filter material and at least half the old water. i know people who cycle a tank a month with one 'disposable' fish before putting the rest in.
@DETH_ADDR5 жыл бұрын
It was not the clarifier. It was the substrate swap. The majority of beneficial bacteria grows in the gravel and when you swapped it out there was a massive ammonia spike and the fish burned their gills. The catfish survived because they can breathe surface air. I'm so sorry for your loss and hope this information can help. If you ever make drastic changes to a fishtank like that again you need to constantly test for ammonia (and nitrite) and waterchange it out accordingly :)

SerpaDesign I know it’s late but I’m sorry for your loss. Maybe in another unexpected death you could try to send your death fish into an autopsy center, and that could give you a clue of what really happened.
@lucasamaral60766 жыл бұрын
I have seen this happen many times, including it has already happened to me at a place that I worked(Natural History Museun). Changing the substrate in an already established tank is death sentence. Once we lost a fish with 14 years old(Tilapia buttikoferi) doing this. There is a several reasons for this: nitrosomonas, nitrobacter, azotobacter etc... Thrive on the substrate as you aready know. Toxins, patogens and anaerobic organism also exist on the substrate, move that and you will realese it from enclosure. I notice that your substrate were made of basalt wich is a mafic rock, most water clarifiers use as flocculant aluminum chlorhydrate, while normaly is safe to use, if the KH level is low and enough is added to the tank, the aluminum can be lethal. This might be what happened. Also I don't know where you live but at least where I lived dish sponge have anti fungal. A weakened fish stressed with all the situation dies releasing compounds in the water, the rest is only a chain effect... I really like your channel, stay strong, we used to say working with animals: who deals with life deals with death.

Thank you for the kind words I really appreciate it! As to issues with over cleaning and the cycle, I don't think that was what happened here. As I said to others in the comments, I tested the water and I wasn't seeing anything that would lead me to believe that it was issues with the cycle as the parameters were coming back perfectly normal.

That crossed my mind as well, new substrate, cleaning the wood, and cleaning the tank in general. But if you tested the parameters and there was no ammonia or other issues then that does seem unlikely. Sorry you experienced this. 😔

Dude I too thought over cleaning there's no way to test how much biological algae you have. You know the slimy stuff that's on everything inside of a tank. Even with a biological boost it takes 3 days for that to establish in a new tank. I to hate that water clearing product. Sorry for your lost.

That was something that I really thought it was because all the pipes in our house are original and it's about 30 years old. However, the water purifier that I use takes care of those items, so I don't know if that's what I think it was. Regardless I will still have to get it tested for that just for my own peace of mind.

Not sure on what you did with the filter during the move but I suspect you may have just had it sitting there for a few hours. And that it was hooked up to the tank without being maintenanced. The bacteria in the filter is highly aerobic and after using the oxygen present probably died which created a lot of ammonia. In addition to a substrate swap and tank scrub this was essentially a fully uncycled tank. And I'm not really sure but I would guess after a few days it got cloudy, that is a gaseous bacterial bloom, and perhaps the water clarifier did something to further the problem? But my guess is if you could smell them, and the color of the water, there was quite an ammonia/nitrite spike. Hope this is helpful.
@SerpaDesign6 жыл бұрын
That does make sense and was actually one of the first things that I suspected, but it doesn't add up with the evidence that I gathered from water testing, etc. The tank had a slight cloudiness about it since I set it up and I was only adding the clarifier to get some of the excess dirt into the filter. It wasn't like all of a sudden it got cloudy. I suppose it is still a possibility, but I highly doubt that's what happened. I appreciate the input.
@larandaleeful6 жыл бұрын
I agree. it is possible your cycle crashed in the move. At least somewhat. The fact you felt the need to use a clarifyer to me indicates a bacteria bloom. Or one fish randomly died from random causes and the resulting spike killed the others etc. I know you were in emergency mode and did a 100% wc but did you happen to test it before you did? Another thing I would consider is random spikes of chlorine or amonia in your local water supply. They will do that in cases of bursted pipes, emergencies, etc. You can safely double dose most dechlorinators and I do so with Prime all the time. Otherwise, double check the plumbing in your house is good. So sorry for your loss nonetheless. I know you really liked those guys and it's hard to open up about those kinds of losses online. And bc so much changed in that short amount of time I doubt you may ever know what it was. :/
@blackcobra44946 жыл бұрын
SerpaDesign The dead fish probably jump started your bacteria and that’s why your water tested ok
@kickezer6 жыл бұрын
You're cycle could have been up and running, but not enough bacteria. So when you did your first watertest, it was fine. with adding so much fish at the same time, the values might have spiked and killed off most of the fish. The few that was left alive, is the stock the current bacteria could've supported, so when you retested the water values, it would have balanced itself out due to the reducement in stocking in the tank, just a thought

I had a 10 gal planted tank that was beautiful with some cory catfish, neons, and a betta fish. Overnight it seemed, after having this tank for over a year, suddenly something went wrong and I lost all my fish as well as most of the plants to a weird algae bloom. I had to take down the whole thing and the only fish that survived was the betta, who is still around but not in good shape. It just sucks and I was heartbroken that something I worked so hard on and I loved so much just suddenly went up in smoke. I now have a 30 gal with some goldfish and my betta is in a nice little 5 gal on his own.

Over time they bond with you if u allow it to them so sure it freaking hurts when u loose them ...so when u say something like 'get over it it was just your pet!' u should definitely overthink what being a pet owner means for u and if ur definition might be pretty cruel and uncaring towards ur pet sooooo hope u can truly smile soon again a caring soul from Germany

I'm sorry for your lost. I have been through similar situation as well. I put them in clean water (in a bucket). Then I made a 100% water change and put them back. They died couple days after. I should have added at least a bit of the old water from the aquarium to help the acclimation. I have also seen fishes dying with stress. The signs might not show up in the same day. Then, few days later, you find your fishes dying and there is nothing you can do about it. It's so sad.

I feel for you, bubba. The week before last we had an aerial tornado decimate neighborhood trees and power lines. Power service was interrupted for days and during upper 90 days. It was too stressful for my Chinese algae eater, Jetfuel. And my monstrous black moor goldfish was showing signs of hypoxia. So I spent hours getting the tank back in good condition, but figured Onyx wouldn’t make it through the night. But the next day he began returning to his normal behavior. Sorry for the loss.. All animals are equal including the human animal population. If I had my guess the tank was not setup and run long enough to create the beneficial's. Some were stressed more then others or the whole tank would have perished. They came from a very rich environment to a very clean one; Fish in my book are not designed well for change. 100% change is probably more then a lot of Fish can handle. Whether I'm right or wrong it's my take. . I have not kept Fish in a long time but I'm ready to give it another go. I'm glad you posted the video; it's important.

The water clarifier you buy in the pet store is the same clarifier used in drinking water so its, most likely, not the culprit. In a new/very clean, well stocked tank toxin levels can increase exponentially with no established ecosystem to break down the ammonia. I almost lost 20 beautiful angelfish doing the same thing!! They were the ones I picked out to keep from my breeding pairs. Luckily I caught it just in time and managed to not overreact for once in my life😂. Terrible news! Things like this can really suck your energy out of you? You mentioned have contractors doing floor work. Depending on what that was, is there any chance that off gassing from adhesives, finishes etc. could have filtered over time downstairs in your new place? Not too long ago, I spray painted something and my daphnia in another part of the house were goners in hours. For large fish it may have taken longer. Be interested to know just how long your filter was off for durring the move and if you cleaned that as Well as your water and decorations ect you usually have 2 hours maximum down time before a filter will crash at that point your ammonia and nitrate will spike when it's turned back on a good method is to have it running in your buckets or storage pond while your setting up your new tank to minimise any chance of a crash we've all had it happen tho it's all part of the hobby something as simple as using a house hold cleaner and forgetting to wash your hands can be devastating accidents happen especially durring a move when there's so much to think about

A lot of stainless steel screws contain a minimal content of Zinc and Even lead traces. Alone these quantities are negligible ..... however combined with the clarity product it would oxidise and create toxic gases in very small amounts. The active ingredients that cause this are sulphuric acid >0.05% and aluminium sulphate anhydrous

Sorry for your loss. I think It may've been the stress of moving that did it. With all thr movement they stressed out and died. But it happens.

I’m so sorry this happened Tanner. 😞 Maybe get a couple of cheap feeder fish and put in there for a week or so before you put your other babies in. Do you have something that eats fish? Just a thought. Anyway, it could happen to any fish keeper. Don’t let it get you down. It’s okay to be sad but remember the good times, get some new fish, and make some new memories! 😊🌷

Sorry about your fish, I understand how frustrating it is to lose them and not really know why. This recently happened to my mom's tank, she has a 75 gallon and lost all her fish when we cleaned it out. It had been in need of a good water change for a while, she just hadn't kept on top of it. Looking back I think we probably should have switched them into cleaner water more gradually, instead of doing too much too fast and stressing them out. They all died within a couple days of the switch, leaving only one plecostamus that somehow jumped out of the tank and she lost that one too. She had to start over from scratch but now has a bright, colorful tank with lots of happy healthy fish. I'm sure that in time your native tank will be full of life again, maybe even better than before, best of luck to you!

I've had something similar happen to me with when I changed substrate, and did a 100% water change (I've made this mistake more than once before I realized what I did wrong) which had a bacteria bloom that made the water cloudy. Added a tablet that would clear the water, but it didn't register with me that it was cloudy because of the substrate/water change. Some of my fish died and some of them lived. I was heart broken. Then a few years later after I got back into the hobby I did it again and realized what I'd done wrong. So, I feel ya. I'm sorry you lost your fish-babies.

I've read through the comments. What you said about a little cloudyness the night before. A filter that has been moved and isn't cleaned can contain dead bacteria which can result in a nitrite boom. Also it can result in a becteria bloom which can also harm your fish. A bacteria bloom is mostly seen in cloudyness in tanks. Don't know how cloudy your tank was but reading the comments and seeing your video it seems to me the best answer would be a bacteria bloom with "bad" bacteria or an overkill of nitrite. Overcleaning basicly is impossible if you do a lot of small waterchanges the first couple of weeks. And cleaning won't result in problems within a few days but forgetting to clean 1 part of a biological entity can result in loss... Its something that can happen to the best so don't feel bad about it. Peace ;)

Reading below (and watching video), I would lean toward over cleanliness... I know it sounds improbable. But that leans to the beneficial bacteria. Maybe you simply experienced an ammonia spike without having enough beneficial bacteria built up in the tank and the ammonia cycle break down starting (unless you tested for that prior to 100% water change when you discovered dead fish). I didn't see you mention that. Then again what do I know, I only have a 10 gallon tank. And watch you for knowledge and information. Simply learning and observing. Can't wait to see what you get afterwards. Those where some really cool fish!

BTW, wife cleaned room where I have my only 2 10 gallon tanks. placed her cleaning materials (Lysol wipes) on top of the tank. 1 fell in and just like that 50 plus guppies (babies included) dead. Know the pain. Now wife isn't allowed to clean in the room. only real question is who got punished. BTW to any haters, a heavily planted tank at any level can handle a solid bio load like I'm mentioning. The fish were fine and socialized well for 3 years in this manner in 2 separate tanks similarly stocked in numbers (same fish).

You should kept 30-gallons of old water from previous water from your fish tank if you have 90-gallon what happened is if you have removed all the water from your tank you won’t have enough fish bacteria to protect them from the water supplied your tank. you should mixed 30 gallons old water from your tank and 60 gallons new water from your 🚰 tap after adding all conditioner de chlorine liquid and wait for another 30 minutes to settle down/heated up also not to shock your fishes to a new water even though your native fishes from the wild. I’m pretty much sure they have different temperatures to kept inside the aquarium. sorry for your loss🙏but i do like 👍🏼 your set up.

Anyone who keeps fish knows any number of things could be the reason. Sometimes something as simple as a different water source. The loss of your fish is unfortunate. I wish you the best.

Years ago I bought a house in East Nottingham, PA and kept losing fish. A local pet shop told me the area had a high level of copper in the area. Pretty sure that was my problem. Sorry to hear about the fish you lost.

It's so weird that they all acted normal. My theory is one of them was too stressed and poisoned the water after it died, leading to a chain reaction. But thank you for sharing this hard story. Rest assured it wasn't your failure.
