When you think about it, it's astonishing that the language (English) of a country that is still strongly classist (the UK) hasn't had second-person formal/informal distinctions for centuries, while the more egalitarian Netherlands still has "je/u".

It was part of English, in a manner, by means of referring to one in the third person. "Would the lady prefer tea of coffee before her meal?" Now that would sound impersonal or even mildly dismissive, but there was a time.

In English you = u. Thee, thy and thou are the familiar forms and no longer in use.

Thou hast probably seen it in the Bible. Thou (informal) You (Formal) With verbs you usually add an -st for second person informal. Thou hast/ You have (haven as you used the infinitive with you)

Thou = u You = je But thou is definitely old English. Like Shakespeare. What's funny is that even more informal (texting etc) we might write "what are u doing" but that's just shorthanded. Another fun note: Some acronyms represent "you" with a "y" like in "wyd" (what're you doing), while others represent "you" with a "u" like in "hbu" (how 'bout you) :)

As an Afrikaner, I find this very interesting. Afrikaans also has these two (jy en u), but it works very differently. U is basically "reserved" for God, such that I wouldn't even call the president "u" if the situation presented itself. Being formal in Afrikaans works very much like English (at least in South Africa) where you would address a person you deem to be of "higher" importance on their title (ex. professor, advocate, pastor, etc.) or by sir/madam (meneer/mevrou) if the title is not known. There is also an interesting thing where, if the person is very important, you would always use said title and completely avoid using "you" (jy). (Edit) The above is for formal situations where people are not well known. In my job, I would call anybody "jy", even my boss / the client (if often worked with). For family and friends, something interesting also happens. If the person is significantly older than you, you would address them as "oom"/"tannie" (effectively uncle/aunty) regardless of whether they are direct family or not. Kinda weird now that I think about it. (Edit 2) My direct elders I would call "pa/ma" (father/mother) and "oupa/ouma" (grandfather/grandmother). Which is also kinda weird since "moeder" has fallen almost completely out of use and "Vader" I would only use for God.

Leuk dat jullie in Amersfoort hebben gefilmd! Ik werk daar bij een architectenbureau en wij zeggen onderling altijd 'je' op kantoor. Ik doe dat ook bij alle zakelijke contacten, omdat 'u' in mijn beleving afstandelijk of hiërarchisch overkomt, terwijl ik juist een gelijkwaardige partner in de communicatie wil zijn. Als ik iemand voor het eerst een mail stuur probeer ik het zo neutraal mogelijk te houden. Dus geen 'u' of formele taal, maar ook geen 'jij' omdat dat dan nog te ongemakkelijk is. Maar ik krijg in 95% van de gevallen een mail terug die begint met "Beste Jan" en vervolgens kunnen we elkaar gewoon met 'jij' aanspreken. Helaas werkt het in elke branche en elke situatie net anders, dus het is moeilijk om hier algemene tips over te geven.

I believe the use is more or less the same in Spanish. We use “tú” ( je/jij) and usted (u). “Tú” for people we know and always for young people, and “usted” for old people, superiors, customers, etc…). The main difference is the fact that we conjugate different the verb depending on which one we are using. For instance “tú tienes” (je hebt) or “usted tiene” (u hebt). For “usted” we conjugate the verb as the third person of the singular.

Ik vind het leuk dat de nederlanders je beter vinden - het is de indruk. Ik vind je ook simpathieker dan u. Ik leef in Spanje en hier is het ook zo dat vele mensen je beter vinden. Hoewel, de respect- u voor oudere mensen vind ik belangrijk. Helaas, gebrouken vele mensen in Duitsland bijna altijd Sie en niet u als zie met de onbekenden spreken. Als je met een persoon tussen twintig en viertig in Duitsland op de straat sprekt, moet je bijna Sie ( u ) gebrouken. Ik zou liefer du zeggen.

I was speaking German in Germany and was constantly saying "Sie". They were trolling me and pretending not to understand me until I switched to "du". In Austria, however, I kept getting compliments how good my German was.

Ik heb ooit geleerd dat je in eerste instantie tegen iemand die ouder is dan jezelf zeg je u,in het bedrijfsleven spreek je ook met u. En als je iemand niet kent zeg je u! As a native speaker of English, the formal/informal divide can be hard to navigate. Even compared to other Germanic languages, the distinction seems less clear to me in Dutch.

honestly though its a bit less important in dutch. even this video shows that. in english there are formal ways of writing but there isnt a proper word that works like ''je'' and ''u'' so its probably harder for non english speakers to do formal english since its just something you know.

I thought it was interesting that the young people thought u should be reserved for speaking to elders and yet the elders almost without exception said that being addressed with u made them feel old. I bet it’s a form that’s going out of use in the language. Maybe another few generations it will be completely gone.

In Flanders (Belgium) we often say 'U' also in informal settings depending on the sentence, and 'ge' is used instead of 'je' when trying to speak Flemish instead of proper 'TV News anchor language'. 'U' is used when 'ge/gij' can't be used. We also do use 'U' when trying to be polite (a cashier talking to a customer) though this falls away if it's a regular customer you speak alot with. An example of 'ge' : '' Hebt ge dat gezien?'' = '' Have you seen that? '' An example of 'U' : '' Hier is uw boel'' =''here is your Book ''. A' example of formal 'u' : '' Hebt u graag een kassaticket? '' is ''would you like the receit?'' An example of 'u' we use in formal ways : '' Hoe gaat het met u? '' = '' how are you doing? '' More informal way of saying 'u' : '' Alles goed met u? '' = '' everything good with you? '' because 'ge' just can't be used in this case and 'je' just sounds weird to us. 😂 News anchor Flemish is just 'u' formal and 'je' informal but not in a very informal way but still a polite way.

It's also important to know that 'u' is the object form and 'uw' the possessive form of 'ge' / 'gij'.

I am an American that was a student in Belgium many years ago. In Belgium it was almost always, u. There were a few young people resisting that at the time though not many.

Er zijn eindeloze variaties van je/u in Bahasa Indonesia. We hebben ‘direct addresing’ bijv. kamu, Anda, kau, enz., en ‘indirect addressing’ bijv. bapak/ibu (meneer/mevrouw), saudara/saudari (broer/zus), enz.

Very interesting! In Germany the rules for using the formal address are far more set in stone and you would use 'Sie' almost always to people you dont know and towards teachers etc, young ppl (up to 30ish) amongst each would frequently use the informal address even if they don't know the other person and when a young person addresses you with 'Sie', you know you're getting old. Within families you would never ever use the formal address, thats just weird.

Thats exactly what I do in Dutch and it is often appreciated. It says more about your own class/education but know that you are not in the majority. Most people do prefer "du"/"jij" because they thought it means old instead of respect.

I noticed that many people used the age clichées that je is for younger , and U for older persons......the age is something relativ ..... with 77 someone could feel even younger than someone who is for example 37 y o ....

Dutch aren't sensitive at all about Jij and U to be honest. i have never seen anyone get upset over pronouns in holland. when you go to shops and stuff they may address you as U but even that isn't really standardized.

In Flanders Ge/gij = family, friends, acquaintances... (very informal) Je/jij = written Dutch, interviews on TV or radio, children... (a bit formal) U = workers in a store, doctors, teachers, just in general people you want to get something from or people you want to serve in a professional sense... (very formal)

In Flanders it is way more commen to use 'u'. It just feels impolite and weird to say 'je' when you are in the presence of a superior. If you say 'je' to strangers you might also get some eyebrow raises in Flanders.

En dat is precies de reden waarom ik telefoontjes van een callcentre haat. Als iemand vreemd voor mij is, zeg ik u en ik verwacht dat ook van de ander. Niet dat ik mezelf op een voetstuk plaats, maar het is een kwestie van beleefdheid Ik erger me ook aan uitingen van bedrijven (banken vooral) die in hun reclame mij tegenwoordig tutoyeren. Ik stel dat niet op prijs. Per telefoon gaat het meestal wel goed. Ik word dan met u aangesproken. Ik ben bijna 75 jaar.

Indien er je/jij/jouw gebruikt wordt en de rest is formeel, komt dit veel beleefder over dan bij het gebruik van U. Nogmaals het gebruik van U kan sarcastisch en denigrerend overkomen.

Mooi filmpje! Bedankt! Gelijk iemand heeft gezegt, vind ik moeilijk om 'u' te zeggen want in het Engels hebben we geen 'formeel' vorm (in dezelfde manier). Ik vind het teleurstellend dat mensen verbinden het met 'respect' (zoals Asië). Dit is onzin.... Uiteindelijk, is 'respect altijd verdiend en niet eist. Het is een beetje grappig want Nederlandse samenleving is meestal over gelijkwaardigheid (maar dit is symptomatisch van een verholen conditie...)

I am Dutch myself, and I speak French as well. The interesting thing is that there is a slightly cultural difference between 'jij' and 'tu', and 'u' and 'vous'. I don't know if the German 'du' and 'Sie' is comparable with 'jij' and 'u', or if there are situations you should use the other form compared to Dutch / French.

Voor mij als geboren Nederlander is het ook totaal onbegrijpelijk wanneer mensen " u en jij" gebruiken. Vooral het gebruik van " jij of je" begrijp ik niet. Ik ben geboren en getogen Amsterdammer en daar zegt men tegen onbekenden, mensen die in het werk of daarbuiten een hogere (natuurlijke) positie/rang of stand hebben " u". Ook als er een formele situatie is, zegt men " u" ( geen U, want U met een hoofdletter wordt alleen gebruikt voor Koninklijke Adel en GOD). ALLEEN tegen kinderen, vrienden of goede kennissen of buren zegt men je of jij. Buiten Amsterdam is dat blijkbaar heel anders. Ik verbaas mij daarover, maar vind dat tevens onbeschoft. De ander toont dan geen respect voor degene waar jij tegen gesproken wordt. De manieren en gedragsregels zijn buiten Amsterdam niet zo goed bekend, terwijl het op school wel wordt aangeleerd.

@@mseb3909 Als ouders dat van kinderen eisen en/of ze dat de kinderen leren om tegen de familie te zeggen, willen ze die kinderen niet en creëren bewust afstand tussen ouders en kinderen, dus gevoeloze familie is het dan. Geen respect naar de eigen kinderen. Het gebruik van U binnen een familie is gewoon respectloos, het is de familie en als iemand geen respect heeft voor eigen familie, eist die dat familie U gebruikt, die persoon voelt zich dan verheven binnen de familie.
