From what I have learned about Highland wear, it was based on practicality. If the is need for a belt wear one, if not, don’t. The fashionable wear of the kilt for special occasions brought the “rules”. Though I like my wool kilt and tweed jacket and vest, I feel best in my Feileadh Mòr. 😁

I agree about not wearing it under a vest, but I don't get the dress sporran point made by Rocky. In fact. many would argue that a white metal buckle should only be worn with evening wear, and that they are too blingy for traditional day wear. With a Kenmore doublet, a Montrose Doublet, or a Balmoral Doublet, a belt and buckle are an essential part of the look and these should be worn with an evening sporran. So belt and waistcoat together = bad. Belt and evening sporran together = no problem as long as you're wearing it instead of a vest. The final exception to the vest and belt rule is the dirk principle. If you have a ceremonial reason to carry a dirk (cutting the haggis etc) you would wear the dirk, suspended by a belt and buckle, and if you happen to be wearing a vest, that belt should be worn OVER rather than under your vest/waistcoat.

It's called the breacan-an-feileadh (belted plaid) for a reason. It evolved from a tartan cloak that was belted closed.

A kilt belt can come in quite handy if one has had a pair of trews tailored from the same tartan as the kilt (minus of course the sporran. . .)worn with a basic pair of brogues and an Argyll jacket instead of a Prince Charlie.

A kilt belt & buckle should be worn with a formal sporran when wearing a Montrose or Kenmore doublet.

My belt provides a tight spot at the bottom of my 'pocket' in the rise so I always wear one. @4.50 I'm the opposite, I wear a kilt and always have a knife on me, (Sadly not my sgian, it has to be a folder but that's the U.K. for you,) no poncy shirts, knee socks, sporrans or weskits, Kilt, workboots and usually a band tshirt minus sleeves.

An option for wearing a kilt belt because of kilt hangers. Could be to wear the belt buckled under the left arm, as per British (plain buckles) Regimental stable/Corps belt, so just a plain band of leather may show. Also will not interfere with the deformation of waistcoat and jacket frontage.

I have to be honest that sometimes I will wear a belt when typically you’re not supposed to. Do you know when you’re wearing your vest and your jacket. But when I do that is because I know that for a large portion of the time I may not be wearing my jacket and my sporran will be a semi dress. I know they know that a portion of the buckle will show from under the vest and I think this actually does help it pop a little bit. But if I’m really gonna be taking my jacket off, the belt and buckle will not come with me. If I’m wearing a dress sporran, no belt and buckle. Also if I’m gonna wear in the outdoors hiking or even just working, I’m going to use a different type of belt. Still a wider one, but no decorative buckle. What I’m waiting for and need is a custom taco pocket to go on the belt. Good for regular tacos with an insulated cooling liner for Choco tacos.

i think that the general rule about this, is more does it look good or not, more than should you ? i've seen poeple wear full dress with the belt that looked great, as i have seen poeple not wear a belt at all and look horrendous, also there are lots of types of belt buckle that would fit a dressed outfit, some round buckle do fine with a vest, and unless it does not suit you, you could generaly make something work out. or you could wear a vest that is taylored to sit over the belt and not be so long that it would go over it which i have seen. and i would had to that that it is only a question of how fashionable you look with it, because everything can be done if it is done right, with a good sens of fashion.

I like to wear waistcoats specifically because if I wear that, then I don't have to wear a belt, and the outfit still looks put together! A casual shirt and kilt just looks wrong without a belt, but I don't like wearing them because they always end up under my gut before long. So yeah, waistcoats. Love 'em.

As a “man of substance” (fat dude, thank you) I wear a belt with the sporran suspenders because it’s definitely more comfortable or practical, even when wearing a vest. Hopefully, one day, I might be able to wear my sporrans with the chain belt, but I’m not holding my breath on that, lest I canna drink me beer!

I should've bought my belt from you guys, because the one I have has so much wrong with it. I never wear it. I would rather be seen with nothing more than a sporran and kilt pin, even if I dont have a waistecoat on.

I find kilt belts a bit stiff and large for my taste. I have one though have only worn it a couple times. It’s turned into my sword/parrying dagger belt mostly.

Hi, Guys! From a Pipe Band point of view, we had to have it all so when the weather changed, we could take off the vest and everyone would still be in uniform. But, about 20 years ago, pipe band uniform regulations no longer required us to wear a sgian dhu so I don't bother with that anymore either. But I couldn't agree with you more in that when you wear a prince charlie/vest, you shouldn't wear a belt. They look overdone.

When wearing a waistcoat thevbelt buckles just does not look good pushing out on the bottom of the waistcoat. Just my opinion. But anytime I'm not wearing a waistcoat I feel like my outfit is not complete without my kilt belt on.

I am fat also and within a few hours my belt is under my fat belly, it will not stay up around my belly button, also I have to wear suspenders because if I don't my kilt falls down to my ankles and nobody has to ask or kilt lift to find what I wear under my kilt

It’s probably not on purpose, but Eric’s tie is the non-binary pride flag colors, and my souls is happy.
