Just watched your video. very good... But... Here (over the pond) in Scotland. The best way to make sure that your kit is sitting right has it's hard to see it. Is the A: have a large mirror to dress in front of. B: Go on your knee's. It SHOULD sit 2 inches above your knee. It does not matter about how high it is above your belly button has no one will see the top of your kilt has you will have a vest and jacket over it. (Some people have a shorter trunk than others. But we should all look / dress the same). But everyone will see how high it is above your knee. Your belt trick I have never seen before. But I tried it.... Dam it works! Wearing the belt with a vest has always been open to many, many, many long talks. And when there are long talks, there is drinking involved (I've seen some of your other video's. So you know where I am on this). And has a clansman. I hope this will be a long conversation for years to come. When you wear a vest you don't need to have the belt. It will not be seen that much. But people do wear it with their vest has later in evening they know that they will be having a `long conversation´ way into the night and at some point the vest will be off. The other thing is when wearing a full dress sporran. A full dress sporran is a little bigger and has metal at the top and this can bang on the belt when sitting down. So this is more of a personal thing. You are spot on with how to set-up your sporran chain!! But there are so many that still don't know this. The holes at the back of the kilt are for the belt, this is why it is of a large size it fit the belt. And of cause we pass the sporran chain there also. Spot on with the kilt pin. I have seen so many try and put it into both layers.

I liked the tip for easy sizing of the kilt belt. I hadn't thought of doing it that way before. I do usually put my kilt belt through the sporran loops, makes it feel (to me) a bit more secure.
@sgtkabukiman9411 Жыл бұрын
I do that with the belt too as I find when I sit or bend, the belt rises and the kilt drops below the belt.

A little note for kilt pin placement, I usually like to have the pin sit on an intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines near the corner of the apron. I find that having it sit on an intersection helps draw the eye to it, and it just feels right in my mind.

Wish this was around when I started with the band! Great tip to put chain over buckle. Additional tip: on kilt pin, a small safety pin on the inside can make sure it doesn’t unhook and fall off when traveling in cars.

Good day, first off awesome videos. I have a new black semi formal sporran and wear the McLeod of Lewis Tartan. I noticed the black dye from the sporran transferred to my kilt. Is this common? I was shocked. I wiped the back of the sporran with a white cloth and see black. Is there something I can apply to the sporran to stop this transfer? Thank you from Canada.

Now as a Scotsman you need to review the extension buckle for the kilt as we get old perhaps the waist fluctuates 😮 It is more cost effective than a new kilt by far .... worth reviewing for those that have given up wearing but don't know an alternative.

I may be wearing a kilt for our local pipe band someday, so are any of these directions different for women?
@propyro85 Жыл бұрын
No, it should be the same if you're wearing the same length kilt as the men. I believe the idea is to have a clean uniform appearance. There may be a few differences in the jackets cut, but you'd still put it on the same ... I say with no experience piping.

@WildAndGourmet Жыл бұрын
Depends on the person. For a big person, flashes are the better option, for a smaller person, both work well.

I like where you pulled your kilt pin from. I keep mine in my sporran as well! (along with my hose...) However, I do pin both layers, to keep my kilt closed. Is that bad?
@richardwhite3924 Жыл бұрын
I pin both layers, especially if it is a windy day. 🙂
@ianthekiltmaker Жыл бұрын
NOT recommended. If you pin the aprons together, it creates a small risk of a tear if your apron catches on a doorknob or a chair arm. It likely won't happen, but if it does it could be disastrous. Also, you want the kilt to be able to flex and move. The aprons should not perfectly overlap at all times, they should be able to move against each other and spread when you sit down or take long strides.
@kiltedpatriotatheart Жыл бұрын
@@ianthekiltmaker Okay, good to know! Thanks, Ian!
@propyro85 Жыл бұрын
It's believed there's a historic precedence for pinning both aprons together, but that's inferred from looking at photos from the turn of the last century, where we see kilt pins being worn much higher (like in the mid-thigh area). You wouldn't want to pin through both aprons in the position where they're typically worn today, as mentioned by Ian, you're at a much higher risk of tearing the fabric if you suddenly find yourself needing to be very athletic. These days, the kilt pin is sort of an optional wind weight that keeps the front apron from flapping too much in the breeze, and is an accent piece.

For a special reason I would need to have the kilt length to be no higher than the bottom of the knee. (No option to wear it much higher than that, so please do not suggest that option.) Realizing that it would not be an ideal length, how bad would that length look?

Is it true that the kilt that is fixed on the right side is feminine?
@USAKiltsOfficial2 ай бұрын
No. The closure for a man's kilt is almost always affixed (typically straps and buckles) on the wearer's right side. Women's kilted skirts can close on either side (that's up to the maker). Roughly 2/3 close on the left and 1/3 close on the right.
