My parents built a house in 1961 and it still has the original 5 ton carrier heat pump. Rectangle condenser.

They don't make them like that anymore, plus that was a good one. I have never heard of one lasting 62 years, even if it still works, it would be rusty and crusty.

I had a furnace in my house I bought in 2003 that was from 1976, it lasted until 2021. It still was technically working but was overheating itself. The thing was a tank, and very simple in design, they definitely dont make them that robust anymore.

Gosh new systems are so darn expensive. My neighbor just replaced the outside unit, and of course had to do the inside because it wasn't up to current code, although it was functioning properly.

Never change them out if you don'th have to. These all new aluminum coils suck. A leak waiting to happen. I've kept units running for years that date back to the late 70's and 80's. Clean them, change the air filters, and they will last forever 😊

Agreed these aluminum evaporators are junk.goes for microchannel condensers as well.

I agree with you on that, but nothing last forever. The old copper ones usually have sheet metal holding them together, so that causes corrosion and in some cases electrolysis.

Nice video. I was going to say, when they look like that. I've been keeping my old unit limping along for a while. I put that stop leak in it the last go round, and I actually think it worked. I was thinking about changing the evaporator and the condenser. The dang thing is 18 years old, even though it looks really good. For the difference in price, I am going to just replace the thing. I am going to use it till it craps out. I have changed the cap, contactor, blower wheel, and the condenser fan motor in the last 4 or 5 years. I will post when I check it out next summer and let yall know how the stop leak did, if it doesn't die first.

Good video Curtis. I think having the option of repair vs. New unit would be worth comparing price and service down the road. If the old unit is going to be problematic then I say put a new unit in. Thats just my opinion. Keep up the good work.

Looks like one hell of a hack job on that t-stat wiring on the inside unit, I love how that condenser motor spade splices are on top of the fan grill and not protected from the elements.

In California houses built between 1940 - 1970 had closet furnaces. They looked the same but had a gas furnace in the closet with condenser outside. I have seen really old units from 1930s - 50s that had water cooled condensers, which are now banned. Most houses built after 1965 have dual packs (gas heat, electric cooling) mounted on the roof.

I just replaced my 1985 York heat pump. Terrible design outside as it drew air through the bottom. The air handler motor was on its 4th belly band, but the motor was still running strong. My lawn guy hit it, and even at my cost I wasn't going to refill it with R-22 on a 38 year old unit. Boy that thing was heavy. lol

Id say a system becomes not worth fixing when either major parts are no longer available or the cost of repairs exceed 50% of the cost of putting a new system in.

I just had my Nordyne HP system like that replaced. It was a mismatched indoor and outdoor unit but the inside was I believe a 2.5 or 3.5 ton and the outdoor was a 3 ton. I cost a fortune to run but it lasted 23 years. My new Daikin fit is much cheaper to run but not as comfortable as this unit was. Probably because the lack of airflow the old one had made it dehumidifiy a lot better.
@jthonn
@jthonn Жыл бұрын
It was probably 3.5 inside and 3 outside, that would work pretty good. The other way around may work, but the pressures would be funky. If the new unit is too big, then yes it may not dehumidify as well. You can buy those dehumidifiers fairly cheap. Make sure your doors and windows seal properly.

How irritating a Fuse inside your Furnace would be. I realize the Fuse doesn’t Blow unless there is an Issue but would a Power Surge possibly Blow a Fuse ? 🤔

You know I'm sure that is possible, but normally it is a short somewhere, or a component drawing to many amps.

I'd say a system greater than ten years old, with a substantial, inaccessible, refrigerant leak(s), or a compressor failure, would trigger a recommendation for replacement of the system. Some customers won't be able to afford a system changeout, so with that said, your mileage may vary.
@Bob.W.

When does a system become not worth fixing? Here by me we have about a 15-20 year life on both heating and air conditioning give or take and sometimes brand plays into that. So if it even starts getting close to that age we start putting a price limit on recommendation of fixing or not. So if it's let's say 20 years old and the blower goes out that's an item we may tell them that it's recommended that system should be replaced but also offer a blower motor temp fix to keep them running until install is done. Always up to them on what they want to do though. 👍🏼

when the repair costs exceed 25% of the cost of a new system, and it is out of warranty (at least 10 yr old)
@stephenhunter70
@stephenhunter70 Жыл бұрын
Admittedly it's lights (flameproof lighting manufacturer for long-walls) and not AC but a company I used to work for based the replacement recommendation on the cost of the new system. If the repair costs and expenses exceeded that figure then they'd recommend a replacement.
@Falcon-eh8tq
@Falcon-eh8tq Жыл бұрын
@@stephenhunter70 In 11 years i've never quoted a repair that cost more than a new system, maybe one recently where a blower was 3190 my cost.. If i tried that rule around here there'd be 25 year old furnaces killing people from CO, because for less than even 75% the cost of a new system i would be able to replace every part got rebuilt but not the heat exchanger lol. The problem lies in that exact scenario because people think it's been rebuilt or something, meanwhile the most critical part is just a couple years away from failing.. replaced 2 HX in that same 11 years, put in 1000s of new units.,. Like replacing the transmission on an old car,but leaving the rusted body panels and failing engine in it and calling it a day. Oh but 'i know better than to fall for those sales tactics!' LOL
