When East Meets West: Augustine of Hippo and the Western Fathers in Orthodox Theology and Piety
During the liturgical services of the Orthodox Church, the “Three Great Doctors and Hierarchs” are mentioned daily. So, in Orthodoxy, according to tradition, it is customary to call Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. Western Christianity certainly recognizes these ancient classical authors as theological and moral authorities. But at the same time, it also, and sometimes to a much greater extent, refers to Ambrose of Milan, Augustine of Hippo, Leo the Great, and Pope Gregory the Great.
What is the place of these and other “Western Fathers” in the history and theology of Orthodoxy？
Is it generally legitimate to divide the representatives of patristics into “East” and “West” ?
How does the perception of ancient patristic authorities change depending on each era and the availability of their works?
