Graham was always a true gentleman, as he handed his media interviews very well, despite certain members of the press acting despicably towards him. Looking back at 1993,it was a bitter disappointment not qualifying for the 1994 World Cup. I always wondered if England had made it, how well they could have done. I still think that was a very good squad, but alas:it was not to be. Rest in Peace Graham.

The heat in USA 1994 would have destroyed England they would have be done by the round of sixteen . English players always suffered in the heat back then due to a lack of preparation by the powers above and due to playing style back then of not keeping the ball and not knowing how to boss possession.

A hugely decent man of great integrity and honesty. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting him and that things had gone his way so he could have had international recognition to add to his wonderful legacy as a club manager and avoid such vilification- Robson got the breaks in 1990 and Taylor didn't, fine margins. . I feel more sad about this now than I did at the time. As he said in his autobiography perhaps the opportunity came too soon - we would certainly have liked to have him stay at the Villa a while longer.

Tiny nations like Scotland, Wales and Ireland have no right to qualify regularly. For them occasional qualification is an achievement. @@jockmackay9582 I agree that it's a travesty when England don't qualify but I disagree that the other teams shouldn't qualify regularly. Football is still a major sport in each of those countries and when the likes of Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Croatia, Czech Republic are all qualifying much more regularly it's not exactly good reading is it? When was the last time any of the other four even got to a World Cup? Wales who have had a 'golden generation' have been the only team that have got anywhere near England's levels and still didn't qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

@Dion Dublin I wouldn't have put them together but that was just what came up when I had a little research. They might be miles ahead in money invested but the source I had said that football was ahead in terms of participation for 9 years and is quite far ahead of rugby. Sure the country doesn't have teams that are even half decent but you could say the say the same about the majority of european leagues. You just drew with Bulgaria and they're league is probably no better. And they probably aren't scouted the way English clubs scout Ireland either

He was very much a gentleman which is the worst thing you can be as an English coach and the results go against you because the media will smell blood and go after you mercilessly. While I was a kid, I sniggered at the documentary (coupled with being Irish it went a little too easy) but when I saw it a few years back I was amazed at how open he was about the mistakes he made to the point where I couldn't believe he'd leave himself that open to be so brutalised. Tactics poorly planned and rushed training - a team that struggled to gel at times and I would argue that Chris Woods' injury must've undo some cohesion at the back. Ultimately they just weren't good enough especially against a generational Norwegian side and that's the stuff that did him in really.

What about Chris Waddle? Matthew Letissier, Gary Parker, David Hirst, Ruel Fox, Dalian Atkinson, Lee Sharpe, Paul Warhurst, Stuart Ripley, Steve McManaman, All players he refused to pick. I don’t buy into England not having the players. he refused to pick Chris waddle who could’ve made the difference with the home games,against Holland and Norway. And England would’ve been in the World Cup. to say England didn’t have any place is a complete lie . Alan Hanson and other media saying this..: it was not observed properly.

Just shows how much influence media has. England, despite some really unfortunate injuries and very odd refereeing decisions, were a win away from qualifying and if you look at some of the 11s, had some competent players and performances. However, it's made to seem as if England were pumped 5-0 every game. Taylor was a gentleman, and as Gary Neville revealed, the media sports journos always had a sinister role in such lead ups.

FA was as much responsible as Graham Taylor for England’s failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. Brian Clough should have been the England manager instead of Graham Taylor. Should Ronald Koeman had been given a red? Would it had made e a difference? Hell yeah! Van Vossen 85 minute equalizer and draws with Poland and Norway were death blows. I would saw that Graham Taylor was a very classy man and handled himself like a professional. England and France both failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup.

We wasnt cheated. Platt was fouled. He gambled on going over for a penalty rather than stay on his feet to try to score. Norway and Holland at home cost England. Taylor was hugely out of his depth in international football. He was found out with his selections. No doubt he was an honest respectable man who knew football. He shouldnt have been insulted that way in the papers. Venables showed the difference between them.

@TheDvdral
@TheDvdral 3 жыл бұрын
There wasn't that much around at the time. Clough was near the end, the leading clubs managers were mostly Scottish I believe, Venables was busy playing CEO at spurs. Other than that you were looking at maybe Ron Atkinson or Howard Kendall. Taylor had done well with Watford and Villa and probably deserved his chance.
@TheDvdral

@@veggie42 Redknapp was manager of Bournemouth in 1990 so a bit early for him, maybe should have got it when Hodgson got it. Venables is a strange one, he definitely had other financial interests at the time and he never did a qualifying campaign as all his matches were friendlies until euro 96. Hoddle was decent, until his weird views on faith and karma came to the surface!
