Thank you for live narration and no horrible A I voice. My heart goes out to all but esp that poor woman who lost her husband and both sons all at once. Staggering loss.

I was hiking in the Puerto Rican rainforest a couple of weeks ago with friends and we were lucky that we were near a shelter when it started pouring quite suddenly. I also tend to carry extra layers of clothing on day hikes even if I don’t need them at the beginning because I always think what if I get stuck in the woods for some reason.

Tbh I spent a month there and the people were SO DRAINING. Basically everyone I met was looking to get money from me whether that was selling something I didn't want, upselling their other items I didn't want, trying to be a guide that I didn't want, etc. The only places I liked were the places no tourist would go (random villages with nothing to see), because the locals just acted like normal humans there.

Always always always carry enough supplies to stay the night outdoors when you go hiking. Rain gear, flashlight, emergency blanket. These are all so preventable

"Experienced" hikers shouldn't have to be told the basics: prepare for the worst, check the weather, don't separate, have a known plan (& stick to it!), have a way to get help, listen to the locals. I've never hiked a day in my life & *I* know all of that. Where's the common sense? Especially when you have your kids w/you. 😠

Seriously! You should always plan ahead and look out for yourself. If you have almost your entire family with you, including your dog(s), then you should definitely prepare yourselves for ALL of your sakes! Anyone who goes on a hike in an area they’re new to should at the very least check the weather before they go. David is lucky the family dog survived so his poor wife wasn’t left completely alone. I feel so sorry for her, the dog, and those two boys.

Always carry matches on a hike, along with a lightweight tarp and some Paracord. With those you can build enough of a shelter to keep the rain and wind off of you, and a fire to keep warm. Once you get wet and cold, hypothermia can take you out fast. You need the awareness to admit you are lost or not going to make it back before it gets dark, so you can get ready to survive the night while it is still light enough to see, build shelter, gather firewood, build a fire, etc.

Fires are not so easy to light especially in pouring rain. I'm experienced at lighting fires from completely natural materials, but if caught out I'd focus on finding/building a shelter. Gathering enough fuel to last any length of time is also a big task of itself

I did the Mt Toubkal hike a year or so before those girls did. I camped within eyeshot of the are they camped in.... Extremely unnerving to hear that story. The poor girls were definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they suffered brutal deaths at the hands of those animals..

It is always best to carry a day pack with you on any day hike, no matter the weather. It can easily hold some form of shelter, food, emergency means to start a fire and a bit of dry clothing, without weighing you down too much.

It's absolutely insane people in 2025 need to be told how to do everything because they are majorly incapable of ascertaining the concept of common sense!! Understanding the environment and or terrain or scenario one is a part of or involved in.. be it urban, rural, water, mountain does not matter. If u need to be told smh you do not have any business being there...

In NZ, you can hire Personal Locator Beacons from many places - 100% worth it! I live in a place with extreme winters and summers, you can get caught out so easily - make it as easy for yourself as possible to get rescued, no view is worth your life ❤

People should always have a safe escape plan B, recognize the early signs meeting the criteria to resort to that plan B, and then be fast to enact that safe escape plan. On the other hand, some people simply revel to that feeling of a sudden flush of adrenalin in their blood when doing something that is not entirely well defined, safe, ordinary and predictable.

The dog in the second story would have survived because it's fur trapped a layer of warm dry air next to the skin. That makes all the difference. Wet clothes and wind chill are a deadly combination.

Hiking with only light clothes in January ! ... that sounds very very risky ! Children aged just 8 and 10 are too young to undertake any long day-hike. I would not dare take so young children along for anything longer than about 5 mile round hike in a single day.

@@Throughtheireyes91 Hypothermia is treacherous, more so when combined with exhaustion, altitude and dehydration. Where she was, on the Red Crater of Mount Tongariro, the oxygen content of the atmosphere is reduced by about 18% as compared to sea level. That may make the fatal difference for an already exhausted, cold, possibly hungry and dehydrated person. Very sad for this young energetic lady.

Two beautiful young white blonde women travelling alone, in the wild, in a muslim country, that is pretty risky too ... looking for trouble. From my own experience travelling alone in Morocco, as a man, I would say that half of the people you deal with there are truly fantastic and friendly, but never let your guard down because you can not trust the other half of those people, and it takes some time, experience and good judgment to become able to tell rapidly in which half to sort someone you just met for the first time in your whole life.

Sad .. all three stories. 'Experienced'. One must not confuse 'experience' with 'competence'. We had a saying in the Mining Industry .. Statement: "He has 20 years experience." Reply: "20 years accumulated or just one year repeated 20 times?" The two young girls .. unaccompanied in Morocco? 😳 What were they thinking???
