Blaming the park was ridiculous. It irks me that fools blame others for their stupid decisions.

When I heard that one was going to climb to the top with 15 boys I thought…an idiot right there.

This is truly a case of cluelessness of what the mountains are about.

Many people underestimate the dangers of mountains and the wilderness in general and they overestimate their survival abilities.

OMG, Mount Temple was one of most memorable hikes I had. The weather was perfect, just a little snowcap on top, but it is a strenuous hike, with sliding stones increasing the effort. One persistent issue in such situations is knowing when to stop. Once in student days, I advised my group to turn back because of wind and fog. On Temple hike, in my group of three, one person decided to wait on the pass below, doing a little more than you are able to can be fatal. At least one experienced hiker should be present if this was an organized camp (and in general),

I read about this horrible incident a long time ago. I can understand the desire to reach the top but not doing proper planning and putting those young lives at risk is so ridiculous. I’ve done the hike to Sentinel Pass a couple times. Carrying on to the summit looks pretty daunting. Wish I had tried doing it when I was much younger. The view from there looks amazing.

Is it difficult for Sentinel Pass? I just hiked Rockpile and Consolation Trail at Moraine Lake in October. It was very cold, I could not go further.
@mako88sb
@mako88sb 10 күн бұрын
@@realchinese2012 Compared to Consolation Trail, it’s about twice the distance and 3X’s the elevation gain. Not sure if that helps? If you’ve done the Ink Pots hike, compared to Sentinel, about the same distance but 250m approximately less elevation gain. Technically not difficult but the final part with the switchbacks does look imposing. When my wife first saw it, she said no way she could make that. However, while we were eating lunch, she watched the hikers on the switchbacks through the binoculars and decided she could do it. I should mention we had perfect conditions both times in mid September. No snow at all. Of course there are KZbin videos about Sentinel Trail that should give you some idea about difficulty.

@@realchinese2012 I should add that the Sentinel pass trail has some amazing scenery so even if you don't do the final switchback portion, you will still be rewarded with great views of the surrounding mountains.

@@mako88sb Thanks for your answer. I didn't do Ink Pots, I just hike Upper Falls and Lower Falls which were easy. I am almost 70 years old, I better train myself before I do some moderate hiking. Play it safe.

@@realchinese2012 Np. The Ink Pots would definitely be a good start to the hiking season. Not sure if you’re familiar with the Ptarmigan Cirque trail in Kananaskis? That would also be a good one. A bit steep at the beginning but it’s relatively short and has beautiful views. Another one I highly recommend is the Plains of the Six Glaciers that starts at Lake Louise. A bit longer than Sentinel Pass but not as much elevation gain and you get a fantastic view of Lake Louise and the Chateau. I was in my early 60’s when I did Sentinel Pass so I know what you mean. I’m still good slogging upwards but it’s the downhill portions that seem to do a number on my lower legs.

I climbed temple in mid September 2001. From the morraine lake parking lot up to larch valley, then on to sentinel pass tha t you see in this video at 13:10. From there, its straight up through some choppy rock to the summit range. Once you've gained the ridge, it's a straightforward slog to the top. Failed on first attempt due to howling winds on the summit ridge. On second attempt the following week, it was 6 hours up and 2 hours down. No need of ropes, just a big slog.

I enjoyed listening to this. Never saw a mountain in my whole life so never knew that avalances are more common in summer. But those wilderness areas are not Disneyland. Those places need to be taken seriously. And dont try to take selfies with the bison at Yellowstone. But my point is, wether its climbing some mountain like in this story or going to visit a place like Yellowstone people have to understand these places are DANGEROUS! unfortunately too many do not understand that.

@@davethom8330 youre right this isnt America but this is also in 1955. Based on the sources I used, when this event happened it was prohibited to climb Mt Temple due to high risk of an avalanche. On the top left i would put Mt temple if its actually it and dont put any if its not.
