This might be controversial, but don’t you think the women are somewhat to blame? They agreed to go to these expensive restaurants with him and I guarantee they didn’t anticipate paying a dime towards the bill, even if he would’ve ordered a normal meal. My two cats came from a shelter about 6 years ago, they came into the shelter as a pair so the staff there wanted someone to take on both cats together. They were an odd couple, one tiny little girl cat who was all of 3.3kg, she was a tortoiseshell and white longhair, beautiful! However she was noted for being difficult and well a bit of a psycho! He was quite the opposite, very chilled, very easy to handle, very large, he was 9.5kg on arrival and very black! So in walks myself saying I'll take them both, this pleased everyone as they had been in foster care for a long time. They came to my house and did a check that it was suitable and then I picked them up... We are rural hermits, my cottage is part of a row set adjacent to a small single track road with just 8 houses with only one person in each. So I have only 7 neighbours, I'm in the middle so quite some distance via the common drive from the road. We are surrounded by fields and woods, however although the cats can go in and out as they please they don't really go further than around 30/40ft from the cottage which is still well within my gardens. Having access to a large lawn on arrival soon got the weight off my large gorgous boy and he was down to 8kg within a year which the vet said was OK, he calls him a gentle giant, with his yellow eyes and very large white teeth and very strong black claws he looks like a small panther, (I asked the vet to trim his claws as I was finding it difficult and he commented on the size and thickness of the claws, good job he is a nice cat!) I had a man come to do an asbestos survey last week as the place is 300+ years old, he went up stairs and then came down exclaiming "gosh your cat is absolutely enormous!" I think the cat was stretching out on my bed. Wereas he (the cat) arrived and parked his slippers by the fire and claimed a seat, it was not so easy with my little girl. She immediatly hid behind a sofa in my bedroom, however I've learnt that patience is the best course of action with fearful cats, I did not have a history and all I knew is that she did not like being groomed, she did not like being picked up, in fact I hardly saw her for several months, I just gave her room service by putting a bowel of food at the end of the sofa and some good dry kibble and water. One day she came out though and what a surprise she was, she was skittish but friendly and a bit if a socialite, everyone here likes cats so she made it her mission to visit everybody, sometimes just marching into their house if it was summer and doors were open, she has got better and better, the two cats get on extremely well and will now eat side by side. She still doesn't like being picked up but I've got her to a tolerable level that the vet is not a problem but otherwise I do as she wishes and I do not pick her up. She is independent but very mischievous, she is a great jumper and plays around my workshops and store sheds just next to my house, she jumps from roof to roof and sometimes onto my van and then slides down the front of the van on her belly forwards which is quite a steep incline. She just wants to have fun! I have a stack of paving slabs about shoulder height next to one shed and she jumps down onto that sometimes, it has become our cuddling tower, it is an easy height to put my arms on and have her curl up within them, she talks a lot and makes very interesting noises, I talk to her sometime repeating her tones, I feel though that she understands a lot more of what I say than I do of what she says. I think that is the same with all cats and dogs and other animals. They can learn their names, commands like come here, and food and a lot more, but we, highly intelligent humans, just don't get it! I'm 63 and I've had cats around me since I was 16, I've learnt a lot over the years and getting their trust and never breaking it is probably the most important thing. I deeply love my cats and during a long illness recently (not covid but one 74yr neighbour did get it but has now recovered) my old boy cat never left my side, (he's 15/16yrs but in good health appart from his back legs which are not what they were, so I have to make his life easier with less jumping to get to things). Little one also gave me frequent visits and talked to me a lot, I think I got extra cuddles as well as I couldn't get out to use the tower, (when the slabs are all used I will build a permanent structure for us, me and little cat, to have cuddles in roughly the same place, I probably will make it out of bricks and mortar with a slab on top. In the summer the slab gets nice and warm in the sun and she really likes that, toasty!!
