This type of insane engineering is why I love F1 as a whole. It’s such a shame that people are so toxic about “my driver is the best ever and your driver is an absolute moron not fit to be a taxi driver”. My favourite cheat was the 81 Brabham. F1 had introduced a minimum height check. Gordon Murray reasoned that this could only happen in the pits so he developed a suspension system that crushed down under aero load and stayed compressed until a slow down lap returning the car to the legal height. Then he stuck a box (maybe a flask) with wires coming out. All the teams wondered how he was getting pace and what the box was all about. A “cheat” and a distraction.

Mercedes found a miraculous 2019 Ferrari speed in the last 4 races of 2021, when engine development was banned for the entire year. Pulling away from RB at will wasn't from aero work. The way Lewis came back on Max on the last lap, on old tires, after being passed, showed incredible power disparity between the two. One of those two was working in the gray area and it wasn't Honda.

They exploited what I consider to be a loophole: They used new engine components for the last few races which allowed them to turn up the engine to a more powerful setting, but it would not last many races like that. They took an engine penalty for using the extra components. It was all within the rules. If you think the penalty was too lenient & the rules for new engine components need to be harsher, then I agree with you.

Deliberate crashes and car breakdowns probably happen far more often in F1 than anyone wants to admit, and it's usually impossible to prove. Nelson just broke the cardinal rule of ratting out the team because he got dumped. Their performance difference (Yes Valtteri's too, proving it's not just Lewis that started driving better) over the rest of the teams rose above the 1%, while Redbull's sank to 0.4% due to wear and tear. Mercedes were still faster as a whole the rest of the season but only edging out Redbull by a very small margin. Brazil's new engine was when that jump to >1% happened. So it was just FIA approved fuel without the filler. And the toxicity? Yes it it harmfull and poisonous, also causes sensation of 'high' when sniffed from glues or paint thinners... If get my meaning. The fact that it COULD be used as a rocket fuel, does not make it ONLY a rocket fuel. Or, did you know that women blond their hairs using 3% mix of currently used rocket fuel? I'm surprised to see the Benetton fuel rig issue in here. FIA (through one of it's officials) approved the removal of the filter , even giving instructions on how it should be removed. The particle that caused the fuel rig to jamb was much smaller that what would have been screened by the relatively coarse mesh in question. If I recall correctly other teams asked for and were given permission to remove this filter as well though I don't recall if they ended up removing it for the race. To me it seems that the FIA was looking for a scapegoat and the filter removal was an easy target when in reality it was likely unrelated.

I'm not sure the Ferrari engine fuel sensor should be classed as a cheat. It may not have complied with the spirit of the regs, but it did on paper comply with the fia's then ability to measure it. The documentary, gentleman lift your skirts, from the early 80's explained the situation really well just after sliding skirts and minimum ground clearance rules were introduced. The other half of what's allowed by the rules, is what can be measured, static measurements often don't match up with dynamic loadings, they only indicate what could happen. As an engineer I love interpreting the rules and playing with the properties of what can or can't be measured.

It's like saying it's legal for someone to drive their car at whatever speed they like, as long as they don't get caught by a speed camera. It's still illegal. Exceding the fuel flow limit was explicitely forbidden meaning the solution was illegal but they evaded the law so to speak. It's the engineering equivalent of organised crime. They knew what they were doing was illegal but they made sure they did it when the law wasn't looking. It was smart, but still illegal.

Ferrari got off so lucky with their 2019 exploits. what they did is akin to what Toyota did with the restrictor plate in WRC in the 90s. and the fact that they possibly developed the 2014 engines with this trick in mind means they were in jeopardy of loosing all previous race results from when that was implemented, thats such a gamble. but also its amazing how such a 'basic' exploit haddent been thought of much sooner, older fuel slow sensors must have had a far lower refresh rate.

@@Wildturkey10121 Its more complicated, after the tecnical regulations were issue at the 2019 US GP, Ferrari lost most of its edge, in Spa and Monza it was just ridiculous how fast they were. FIA actually had a problem, if Red Bull waited for a race and issued a complain, Ferrari car would be impounded, and an investigation would happen, but because Ferrari backed out after the directives, there was no way FIA could prove wrong doing, and saying you were faster was not enough, the only way to prove it was if Ferrari told them, and that is what happened, the deal was made secret to protect their brand, but also the FIA, because it is rumoured that there were penalties, that were the culprits of Ferrari awful 2020 season. Also the FIA got help from Ferrari in policing these engines in the future, the FIA needs the teams because Unfortunately these engines are far too complex, and the regulator cant just guess, they don't have the facilities teams have.

Schumacher had some dodgy incidents, definitely. Jerez in ‘97, the Monoco car park situation, but the ‘94 situations are definitely presented with a British perspective. Scott fails to mention here that the evidence showed that Benetton did not use traction control and thus they were not punished. Other teams that had traction control had the same software as the year before but the tc was not able to be used.Michael just out drove Hill in the superior Williams even with the significant horsepower deficit the Ford Z-tec-R V8 had to the incredible Renault V10. And the fuel filler incident was a modification approved by the manufacturer and that other teams were doing the same thing. I’m a little tired of people suggesting that Michael won in ‘94 by cheating when this year shows just how good Michael was at his best. Definitely a season worth watching again, even with the terrible events of the San Marino GP.

I'm baffled by these, were the people watching the timing boards not suspecting something when they saw Brambilla's time was set long before he crossed the finish line? Were there no spectators/stewards to notice that Schell cut a damn third of the track? Or that he suspiciously slowed down on the finish line? I understand that they didn't have PE sensors or other stuff, but how did nobody notice these extremely obvious cheats lol

I heard the story of stencils being used to identify the tyres for qualifying back in the '70's - they used the stencils for a while and one team created their own set so they could have an extra set of tyres for qualification. To be fair, i don't think it mention that this wasn't allowed in the rules.

"Fernando is faster than you, confirm that you understood that message" "Good lad, keep going" was the literal moment everything within me hates team orders to an UNreasonable amount. There is nothing "Teamly" about asking a professional Athlete to compromise his performance on purpose. Things like Bottas letting Ham through in Brazil would also have happened without an team order. That's team work, Bottas didn't even though about holding him up. But randomly asking someone to compromise his race is insanely disrespectful and should be outlawed. I know the reasoning for allowing it was "We can't detect every method teams try to circumvent the rule, so we allow it". But I personally think even when you only catch 1 of 10 people, they need to be punished. Multi21 was a huge dckmove by Sebastian. I had also nothing screaming "Teamwork" about it. But I love that he didn't care about the Order. He knew he was the faster guy, so he got himself that win. I'll still wait for the answer "When X is faster than me. He should have no problem overtaking me."

Multi 21, what people forget is the fact Webber had previously ignored team orders at the British Grand Prix because (in his words) he wanted to win. As for "well your faster than me, so you'll overtake me easily" the problem is that defending can cost more time than letting someone go. Case example was Bernoldi and Coulthard at Monaco. When Coulthard pulled up to the back of the Arrows, Bernoldi was literally right behind teammate Verstappen. After 40 laps or so of solid defence, he'd managed to lose an ENTIRE LAP to his teammate. Had he simply moved out of the way, he wouldn't have lost nearly as much time. Basically you pick and chose your battles, and sometimes letting one go is a better scenario than fighting to the death andf losing overall.

Flavio getting black flagged for life was to much. 5 years would have been perfect just to have him on Brindle's grid walk again.
