Back in those days I was trying to defeat this thing right in the tunnels but failed spectacularly due to the lack of cover. The concept of "strategic retreat" came to me later. But these things are not invincible, if you have enough grenades and explosives you can win the fight both in the original HL and in Black Mesa

@@Raudent I blew up the first gargantua in BM with grenades but it was already in a bad shape after a fight against marines. Couldn't destroy a single one of them in Xen, so they may be invincible when you aren't supposed to kill them by any means. Or it's just the limited ammo capacity, you can carry so little ammo and explosives in BM compared to the original HL.

@tarekcat1 Yes, when a Half-Life game is released him change the hole industry. Just compare the the titles of the franchise with others games of its time. The last example of this was Half-Life Alyx that change the VR industry for ever, and still even after years one of the bets if not the best VR game, the one I see that came to the same level is the Batman Arkhan VR game that released this year.

I wasn't an extreme gamer so I don't know if other games have done it before or after, but when it first came out, one of Half-Life's big thing was having almost no cutscenes. Everything played out from the player's/Gordon's POV and while the player had control.

In the original half life, the Gargantuan could actually be destroyed by conventional weapons, little problem is that you needed a LOT of explosives to take it down, like mines, grenades and bombs from the grenade launcher

I did that on the first playthrough. You had quite a lot of ammo if you are the kind of guy who spares "for the last battle" in those games. I did find the voltage thing AFTER I killed it and I felt a bit dumb.

This why I love Black Mesa. Half Life was cinematic during gameplay before it was truly a thing. Black Mesa never tried to out do that. It always paid respect towards the legacy it was remade for. Enhancing it in the best ways. Including Xen, though it drags on a bit long it is infinitely better than Half Life's Xen levels.

And this is why Black Mesa works as well as it does. They COMPLETELY understood setpeice instances like how Valve handles them. THIS is why Valve gave them the green light to make money on their mod. it's actually the last level of the "Surface Tension" chapter, apparently you have to deal with a Gargantua by blowing it up before you proceed to the next chapter "Forget about Freeman" (or just find a way to pass through the walls and door/gate while leaving the Gargantua alive)

@@TheClsofCasey i believe it works for both Half-life 1 and Black Mesa. the Mortar is only necessary for people who wants to go through the walls that are blocking your way to the next chapter. however, if you are experienced with how you can speedrun the game, you can probably skip the whole thing by go through it all. though i know that it's the case with HL1, but for Black Mesa...that i'm not sure, especially since i don't think i've seen anyone speedrunning the game without using the mortar on the Gargantua or even on the truck to make a path or whatever.

Doesn't help that we don't get a gigantic and heavy creature that is larger than an Antlion Guard/Guardian but is not as skinny as a Strider. Imagine if the Combine made their own Gargantua-sized Synth that can shoot Dark Energy-based flames, now that would be a true beast for Gordon to deal with

You are the one who only looks through graphic fidelity. This remake isn't just a graphic upgrade this enhanced the entire gameplay and physics which is better than the original. Due to many limitations the 98 version have many copy paste NPC with little interaction. This just made them better. When complaining something you have to look through the bright side too 😆.
