Back in those days I was trying to defeat this thing right in the tunnels but failed spectacularly due to the lack of cover. The concept of "strategic retreat" came to me later. But these things are not invincible, if you have enough grenades and explosives you can win the fight both in the original HL and in Black Mesa

@@Raudent I blew up the first gargantua in BM with grenades but it was already in a bad shape after a fight against marines. Couldn't destroy a single one of them in Xen, so they may be invincible when you aren't supposed to kill them by any means. Or it's just the limited ammo capacity, you can carry so little ammo and explosives in BM compared to the original HL.

I wasn't an extreme gamer so I don't know if other games have done it before or after, but when it first came out, one of Half-Life's big thing was having almost no cutscenes. Everything played out from the player's/Gordon's POV and while the player had control.

it's actually the last level of the "Surface Tension" chapter, apparently you have to deal with a Gargantua by blowing it up before you proceed to the next chapter "Forget about Freeman" (or just find a way to pass through the walls and door/gate while leaving the Gargantua alive)

@@TheClsofCasey i believe it works for both Half-life 1 and Black Mesa. the Mortar is only necessary for people who wants to go through the walls that are blocking your way to the next chapter. however, if you are experienced with how you can speedrun the game, you can probably skip the whole thing by go through it all. though i know that it's the case with HL1, but for Black Mesa...that i'm not sure, especially since i don't think i've seen anyone speedrunning the game without using the mortar on the Gargantua or even on the truck to make a path or whatever.
