I was one of those young kids mesmerized by Top Gun when I saw it. I joined the Navy right out of college and became an EA6B Prowler ECMO (backseater of a different kind of jet) and did a tour working the flight deck of USS Enterprise. Dream do come true.

I sat through Mighty Wings watching this the other night too. Ya just can't beat a classic. This is in my top 5 all-time favourite films.

Some of my fondest memories were from growing up around a certain air force base. Definitely made living in a SC town A LOT more fun. The hot guys, uh yeh, there were quite a few. They also had the flightline right off of the highway going in & out of town and would do maneuver training overhead as people would dry by, trying not to swerve into each other as the they watched the craziness above them. In Colorado, I could basically watch maneuver training & shows from my back yard. I have been around military all of my life & have great respect for them.

Spot-on. I recently got in a discussion with friends about "movies you will not change the channel past regardless of what part of the movie is on/then watch until the end every time" Top Gun is that movie for me. I don't have a logical reason why, I just love it. It kinda "is" the mid-80s to me in a single film, and I love to revisit that.

I really hope you come out with more reviews of 80’s movies or perhaps a 90’s season of retrospective movies. But there are quite a few other 80’s gems I know would be fun having you review. Off the top of my head: Crocodile Dundee, Mannequin, The Secret of My Success, Midnight Run, Cocktail, Can’t Buy Me Love. I mean you did a fantastic job and we’d love more! I’ve listened to these reviews multiple times. There’s something about your dry wit while analyzing these films that I find simultaneously amusing and entertaining as well as calming. So here’s my plea: I’d love to have you do more.

My 3rd favorite film of all time. Can't remember the first time I saw it since I was only 2 when it came out. I've watched it probably close to 1000 times in my life. Still hoping someday Paramount pictures will allow Harold faltermeyer to release the entire film score with all the music during the flight scenes (which aren't on either of the official soundtrack releases).

There were A LOT of military/war films that came out of the '80's, but the two that always make me late for anything, are this one, and "The Hunt For Red October". (I know, it was released in 1990 - but it was filmed in the '80's!) A bit of useless knowledge: in "Top Gun", Maverick and Goose's accident scene/Goose's death, are based on an actual incident. The reason the RIO hit the canopy, was due to an error in the synchronization timing of the crew ejection process, and the engine flame-out was, in fact, due to turbulent air entering the engine intake (both of these were fixed on later versions of the F-14). Another great film, is a little not-well-known film called "Off Limits", which takes place in Saigon during the Vietnam War, but is about the investigation of a series of murders. And, of course, there's "Air America". :)

Good review. I've never heard the term "military entertainment complex" but that makes sense. So many of those awful Transformer films just seem like thinly veiled adverts for the military.

1987's Cocktail was a much better movie....amazing how Tom Cruise was such a heartthrob in the late 80s...when the movie came out, I did not even notice Meg Ryan...

"Top Gun" was a fun movie. It is a bit early for you, but you should check out "The Final Countdown" (1980) which has, despite the time travel aspect, a more realistic take on Navy operations.
