If you are interested in hearing a grand, heroic voice performing Baroque repertoire, I highly recommend checking out Franco Bonisolli's rendition of King Doraspe’s aria, “Al valor di questa spada", from the opera “Tigrane” by Alessandro Scarlatti. This operatic gem made its grand debut at the Teatro San Bartolomeo in Naples in 1715.🎶
Contrary to common belief, this repertoire, like any other, requires a full and sustained body of voice. To clarify my point, I would like to share some interesting quotes by great maestros of the past.💡
Giambattista Mancini, a soprano castrato and voice teacher, stated: "...those voices, thin and weak in the entire register, which in my opinion are of almost no value because any voice must have a GOOD VOLUME (as much as possible)."
In 1610, Claudio Monteverdi said: “I heard a fine voice, powerful and sustained, and when he sings on the choir-steps he can make himself heard in every corner very well, and without strain.”
Considering the quotes I have provided, it is clear that both Monteverdi and Mancini, influential figures in the Baroque period, emphasized the importance of having a strong, well-developed voice for opera. However, it seems that today, some believe that this repertoire should be performed only by weak, small, undeveloped voices, which is clearly a misconception.
