Check out an extended highlights of this match. England only got to face 45 overs not because of rain but because S.Africa bowled their overs slowly. So England were punished by having their last 5 overs cut off with little warning. The whole game was a farce but it was fair that England won in the end, at the time I felt sorry for South Africa.

I'm a 3hr drive from the matches in Melbourne but in this 1992 World Cup I was able to drive only 45 minutes to Lavington to watch Zimbabwe play England. My mate decided the best place to sit was with the English fans who had just formed a group called the "Balmy Army". Zimbabwe was bowled out for 134 and the match looked very one sided. At least I got to have a chat with the Zimbabwe keeper, Andy Flower, who was hanging around with the crowd. An announcement declared that because Pakistan had just defeated New Zealand that Australia would miss a spot in the finals. Although the majority of the crowd sighed, the Balmy Army started chanting "We're all going to the World Cup, you're not, you're not!". This had the effect of turning the majority of the rural Australian crowd into Zimbabwe fans which may have contributed to their stunning nine run victory, the first time Zimbabwe had ever beaten England in cricket. The presentation was in the middle with the English team being heckled. The look on "Beefy" Botham's face when someone yelled out "How do you expect to win the final if you just lost to the worst team in the tournament?". Botham looked like he wanted to hurt someone. I'm sure this presentation didn't get aired on TV. A week later Pakistan beat England in the 1992 World Cup final.

The old rules were worse. It was based on run rate solely. There was a game that had Australia bat first, kept getting taken off for rain, and the innings was reduced to 38 overs. More rain, and finally West Indies we’re given the task of 108 runs off 18 overs before their innings commenced. Even in 1989, this was a complete doddle. www.espncricinfo.com/series/benson-hedges-world-series-1988-89-60890/australia-vs-west-indies-3rd-final-65450/full-scorecard

Hey Guys, There is a rule called 'Over Rate' Captain has to ensure that they have to bowl certain no. Of overs in an hour. Slow rate gets captained fined and even match banned. So the broadcaster argument is bit exaggerated. Teams cannot take their own time to bowl out their overs. Even today duckworth lewis is applied to end the game on time. Sure there is a buffer time extension for rain delays which was also provided in this game but beyond a certain time, Overs start getting reduced. The problem in this game was not broadcaster but the 'Rain Rule' which negates good bowling in first Innings

The first of many hilarious exits from world cups for South Africa..... After this they were knocked out by Lara in 1996 after Windies had just lost to Kenya (who don’t even make the World Cup these days), the infamous tie against aus in 99, the tie against SL in 2003 because they didn’t know what score they needed, got bowled out for 150 against aus in the 2007 semi final on an absolute road, knocked out by NZ in 2011 who weren’t even that good back then, then again by NZ in a game they should have easily won in 2015, to the last World Cup where they were just terrible throughout and one of the worst teams. A World Cup history to be proud of lol

I remember this vividly. I was just a kid watching this live in Australia. It was really confusing. We couldn't understand why they just didn't play the original over and just play a bit longer. It was the semi final of the world cup. Most of the public weren't aware of this bs was because of the broadcaster had made the rules. We were confused and heartbroken for the South Africans. Finding what actually happened like you guys, I was so angry and ashamed to be Australian. It was the Australian broadcaster channel 9, a free to air channel. It wasn't a pay tv channel. The time was around 9.30 to 10pm when this match finished. It wasn't like they had any prime time type tv on after this match. The whole of the world was watching. This was a dark day for humanity. Thankfully, they changed the law to the Duckworth Lewis system which is a lot better but still to this day, I haven't figured it out but compared to this 22 of 1 ball bullshit. Yes, I think if the public knew what the actual deal was, there would've been a riot

The theory of Channel 9 cruelly crushing the dreams of South Africa and cricket fans world-wide makes for a great story, and Cricket Raaz does a great job of producing an entertaining video on that basis. The only problem is he has no evidence for this theory whatsoever. Don't forget, Kerry Packer, the creator of World Series Cricket and essentially the godfather of modern ODI cricket, still owned Channel 9 in 1992, and still had enough influence to call station management on the phone and demand programming changes.

Agreed, people are forgetting there is a rule called slow over rate where captain gets fined and even banned for not completing their quota of overs in the alloted time. Its easy to say broadcasters should have extended the game but what about the legal issues they could face for not broadcasting shows that they were supposed to broadcast post game. Remember it wasn't the era of hour long pre-game/ post-match discussions While the rain rule was clearly ridiculous, this broadcaster blame is so exaggerated

One of the reasons why this never happens nowadays in the US is because of the Heidi Game: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi_Game This was an AFL game between the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets, which the Raiders won 43-32 by scoring 2 touchdowns in the final minute. However, in order to broadcast the film Heidi, the broadcasters stopped broadcasting the game on the East Coast when the Jets were in the lead, leading to a lot of upset fans who found out the final score of the game! Its not like they stopped the game - just how it was broadcast.

I'm not 100% certain that he is correct on all details. Channel 9 certainly was a powerful influence in the game at the time. In fact it could be argued that no one did as much to move cricket into the modern era as Channel 9. However, I can't verify from memory the call. I know that overrates and teams going slow had been a big issue and still is. You will often hear a call for radical rules to deal with the issue and I don't know that this was not part of the issue. It was the wrong call, but I am not convinced the only factor was the voice of channel 9. However, the rain rule was utterly ridiculous. They tried many different variations and it is what led to the Duckford Lewis method which is impossible to work out for anyone person but it is an attempt to balance out all of the factors that are impacted by rain in a game.

One should factor in that SA players ,during isolation, were mainly part time players working full time jobs.Yet the players always kept the flame alive that international cricket would return. Strangely Rugby Union was still played at international level until 1981 when the Springboks toured New Zealand. In the early 1970s ,two South African provincial cricket teams staged a walk off at Newlands and released a statement that cricket should be inclusive of all racial groups. At the time it was an incredibly brave action given the high handed apartheid government attitudes. Cricket did become more open, nominally, but it was the entrenched apartheid system that was the limiting factor to an international acceptance. The players at the time pleaded a double standard whereby international countries would import and export with SA ,yet cricketers weren't allowed to do their job. Later on post apartheid older players acknowledged that it was unfair to have expected re inclusion to international cricket given the apartheid situation. So that's a little background to that post Basil D'Olievera spurned isolation period.

They weren’t part time at all. Ever heard of the Rebel Tours ? They were very well paid as were their opponents, and the reality was that during the middle 80’s up until de-isolation, South Africa had arguably the highest average crowds and most profitable cricket tours in the world.

I’m so disappointed that this video keeps getting discussed around the place. It has so many glaring inaccuracies and omissions that it makes it unwatchable. 1. There is no way known that Channel 9 (the host broadcaster) were responsible for the calculations that led to the infamous 22 runs off 1 ball. 2. Channel 9 did not make the rules regarding the timing of the innings - the ICC did. Channel 9 may have suggested them, but the acceptance, implementation and enforcing of them was done by the ICC. 3. The video does not explain, at all, how Channel 9 benefitted financially from having the timing rules in place, let alone how greed played a part in those decisions being made. 4. It is very obvious from the video, that the supposed guilty party Channel 9, had no idea themselves what the new equation was. They were informed by the South African management what the equation was (22 off 7) and they only realised it was 22 off 1 when it was shown on the video screen at the ground. 5. There has never been anyone, anywhere, that can corroborate the story that Channel 9 “forced” the game to be completed that night and the reserve day not to be used. 6. The decision to ensure the game finished according to the rules would’ve been made by the umpires and the match referee, likewise a decision to use a reserve day. Not a broadcaster. 7. Despite repeated claims in the video, not once is it ever made clear how the host broadcaster financially benefitted from the decisions made regarding the revised target, or the non-use of a reserve day. 8. Despite repeated claims in the video about how unfair the whole process was, not once, ever, has there been an investigation by the ICC about anything untoward happening at all. 9. There has never been, not once, any complaint at all from either South Africa, England or the ICC about the undue influence and control Channel 9 had over proceedings, let alone their motives for doing so. 10. The rules regarding innings ending were set out and strictly enforced throughout the entire World Cup. In previous games, both England and South Africa had been benefitted from these rules, particularly South Africa who had a game against Pakistan basically handed to them after rain intervened. 11. The rain rule at the time of the 1992 World Cup heavily favoured teams batting first. South Africa had the choice after winning the toss. They bowled first despite the risks in doing so. 12. Not a single mention was made during the video of South Africa’s tactics in ensuring England didn’t face a full 50 overs when they bowled first. England only faced 45, losing 5 overs of productive batting at the death. 13. Not a single mention how South Africa then had the advantage of pacing their innings correctly knowing from the outset they were only getting 45 overs, not 50. 14. Not a single mention was made during the video of how the umpires stayed on the field long after it was fair for England to continue in the rain, knowing what was likely to occur, and did in fact occur. 15. It is yet another video, in a long long line, that has very thinly veiled racism, hatred and vitriol unfairly targeted at Australia, Australian culture and Australian cricket by Indian favoured parties.

Lmao. You guys hosted the world cup for the first time and mucked it up for that sweet moolah. Except it and move on. I mean it did happen over 30 years ago.

@@eightyseven3113 ..I may be wrong but I'm sure this system had been used prior to the 1992 series....It obviously has faults..as do they all, but I have never seen anywhere that states it was invented by TV corporations...I thought the system had been first used in 1989 in a tri series in Australia and simply superseded the Average run rate system

I searched in Google and found evidence that Channel Nine did intentionally prevent the game from going past 10.10 pm.

@@PavanKumar-fy6fq fair enough Pavan...I can't honestly find anything....but I recall in Englands group games in the tournament..england played SA and I believe Englands innings was curtailed by 9 overs...and South Africas score was only cut by 11...SA had scored 236 in 50 overs....England had to get 226 in 41 Overs....luckily I think it was Fairbrother who stepped up with a quick 50 or 60..So yea whatever the rule was not fit for purpose

@@Shourav101 Who paid who and how ? Explain exactly how “Greed” and financial gain was the determining factor. Explain how Channel 9 insisted the game end the way it did, and the time it did, otherwise they lose money.

The narrator is describing the whole thing in a tone like story-telling to school children. The first thing he says while describing apartheid, "they COULDN'T marry white people" ... the author of the video saying like it is the first essential thing for non-whites.
