A great movie starring Melanie Griffith, Sigourney Weaver and Harrison Ford is “Working Girl.” As for Billy Crystal, he was pretty popular in his day. A funny song you might want to react by him is the song, “You Look Marvellous” it was kind of a fadish song were it was popular for a couple of months. From what I remember, the video was quite funny. “You look marvellous, absolutely marvellous.” 😂

In the video, Billy played Grace Jones, Prince, Tina Turner, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Sting appeared briefly. Billy's daughters were seated with him at a nightclub table, rolling their eyes at what he was saying. He was speaking like Fernando Lamas. Of Madonna -- then fairly new on the scene -- he said, "Her belly button is absolutely mahvelous!" The whole thing started as a parody presented on Saturday Night Live in 1985. (Next year, SNL will have been on the air for 50 years. I was in my 20s at the time. My God.)

Hey Dasha! Super reaction to this one. The restaurant scene actually happened to me IRL! And this was BEFORE this movie came out. 😂 It was in Malibu, at Gladstones, and I always thought there must have been a Hollywood writer who overheard us. Let me tell you, she wasn’t faking her reaction to the food. Best lobster we ever had! And, we were just friends. Actually, this event happened on a double date, and she wasn’t my date. You are really sweet, Dasha. Thanks for this heartfelt reaction and reminding me of that REAL event, that happened so long ago!

Oh wow, I used to LOOOOVE Gladstones when I lived in LA. The last I heard it had been shut down. But for about 15 years I went there as often as I could. Best shrimp cocktail, best swordfish, best ocean waves while dining at the beach, best sawdust on the floor, haha! Everything. And you're undoubtedly correct that famed screenwriter Nora Ephron was probably sitting near enough to you to observe your double date and remember the incident for her her next movie since that's pretty much what happens. Cheers!

I'm so glad you are watching this movie. You have a great take on it before even watching! By the way Harry is an extreme cynic. Many of his opinions are extreme. This is my favorite Rom-Com movie as well. It is very much the story of my wife and I, although not necessarily in the same order. Sadly, we are in a very troubled part right now, BUT I have son who is 24 and he is everything to me. Oddly enough we all live together in a weird house which is two houses put together. She lives in one half and I and my son live in the other half. It's a very weird set-up, but the story goes on....

This flick is very accurate for the boomers. I've known lots of Harrys and Sallys in the 70s and 80s. Lots of stress and confusion. Everyone was playing around the edges of commitment and trying to protect themselves. I was lucky to find a woman who became my best friend and my wife. Good reaction. The guy and girl friend/sex thing is pretty accurate for guys. You just have to grow through it.

I had a best friend that was a girl. We hung out all the time for about 10 years. I think she wanted it to be more, but she never said so I can't be sure. She moved out if state, immediately found someone and was married within 6 months. She almost never contacts me. I assume her husband didn't want her chatting with me. I respected that and have kept messages to a couple times a year.

Dasha, I think Harry was mostly correct about men/women and men not wanting to be "just" friends if they find the woman attractive. However, I don't agree that most men who find a woman unattractive want to have sex with them also. On the good side, there are men who pay attention to women and appreciate them for the minute details. These men may not be numerous, but they exist. The fact this movie touched you like it did should provide you hope. There's a good person out there somewhere for you, Dasha. I hope your time for the right relationship is near. There's a great story told by the screenwriter, Nora Ephron. She was on a plane when they were playing this film on the screens. This was back before personal in flight entertainment was a thing, and the diner scene cut to the next scene before Sally fakes having an orgasm. And the entire cabin was enraged, with passengers groaning in disappointment and some even booing.

Like you, I don't like most rom-coms. It's not because they make me sad, but because most of them are formulaic. I like When Harry Met Sally because it's more creative than most of them. Director Rob Reiner originally wanted to use real couples telling their own stories for the interview scenes. They didn't come across well on screen, though, so he hired actors to re-create the scenes. Here are some other romantic movies you might like, that aren't the typical rom-coms: Roman Holiday (1953) Once (2007) Amélie (2001) Doctor Zhivago (1965)

Finding true love is probably the single hardest thing in the world to do. I think the whole "men and women can't be friends" thing, is kinda more of a young man thing. We usually grow out of it somewhere in our 30s. Feeling the need to get up leave as soon as you've done the deed, sadly, is basically true. Except when you're with someone you really feel something for, then there is nowhere else you'd rather be. Another great rom com to watch is "Singles". Also, someone else mentioned the movie "Swingers", you should definitely check that one out too, it's not as dirty as the title might suggest.

The funny thing about Romcoms is that they are so predictable. They have the 'meet cute' they are friends, they get close, they have sex, they fall in love where there is always a montage where they are happy and get in a photo booth and take pictures. then they have a big fight but in the end, someone starts running to the other to make up:)

I’ve been thinking about your questions. I certainly have women friends with whom I have ordinary “platonic” relationships. But I couldn’t honestly say that there are any about whom I’ve never had a sexual thought. But there’s a huge diversity between thoughts and actions. So Harry is wrong, with a proviso. As to the “3 minutes vs all night” thing, Harry is completely wrong. People who prioritize affection (regardless of gender) will want to stay all night & wake up together. It’s only people who are terrified of commitment, like Harry, who want to leave immediately.

I think some men and women can be just friends, but at some point, the thought of sex will cross one or both minds. It might just be that and that's all. You can't control what you think. But you can control how to react to what you think. A good person can have that thought cross their mind and leave it in the trash bin of thoughts. And then go about being friends. I don't think this is how most people are. I just say it's possible for a select few. Honestly, Harry was probably right if talking about most people in general. Most people are not very good about controlling their impulses.
