My wife Pilar, volunteers at a church for ESL. She's Castellana (Alicante, Spain) and I'm Irish American. It blows everyone's minds when she first meets her students (young and mature) because she broke with tradition and took my name. I won't dox us but her syllabus will read: Mrs. Kennedy, Spanish/English Education and Interpretation. If she continued with family and Spanish regional tradition her name would be similar to Sra Pilar Maria Merced Alvarez Montoya de Kennedy. So when she immigrated she legally changed her name to Pilar Merced Kennedy. I think she likes surprising people with the Mrs Kennedy because she even uses it when we visit family in Spain. Either way she always has a list of people she's tutoring ESL. We're both bilingual. We're close to an El Salvadoran community.

Flor has got to be my favorite. I love how overly dramatic (passionate?) she is. I kind of relate 😆
@tejaswoman4 жыл бұрын
Jenny, you gonna love this... I actually _did_ end up teaching about _Dos Mujeres, Un Camino_ once in my high-school literature class! Back in the 1990s, I lived in the lower Río Grande Valley, just 16 miles from the border in a town called Edinburg. I left the sub with instructions to show the kids just one little scene from _Romeo and Juliet_ , representing Act IV, so they would be ready for me to come back and teach the big dramatic Act V. To my horror, when I came back, it turned out she had let them watch through the end of the movie, screwing up my lesson plans for a couple of days. Except she didn't. The kids started asking me, “Why is he kissing her and not realizing she's not dead?” When I started asking them questions, they mentioned about how they'd gotten confused by all the fast-forwarding and rewinding. It turns out the hapless sub had totally lost control and the kids had run the video back and forth so much they had seen the climactic final scene without having the slightest idea what was going on. Thus I still had my golden opportunity to explain what dramatic irony is: when the reader or audience has crucial knowledge that the characters lack. “Oh, just like _Dos Mujeres, Un Camino_ !” pipes up one of my freshman girls. They explain the premise of the legendary _novela_ to their bilingual but nonetheless gringa teacher from Dallas. "So the man has two women: his wife and his - Miss, how do you say _amante_ in English?" "Well, if it's a woman people usually say 'mistress', but you can also say -“ At this point, we finally, unexpectedly have the full attention of José Luis, who normally tunes out but at this point sits straight up and asks, " *How* do you say it?" I tell him again, and he repeats pensively, "mistress," and after nodding while making a mental note of it, promptly lays his head back down on the desk to resume his afternoon nap. It may be the only thing that kid learned from me all year, but by golly, if he ever has one, he'll know how to brag about her in English. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You really are brilliant, Jenny. Within the first few seconds, watching the video go back and forth between Michi and Flor, I can see that you pay attention to a lot of tiny details. When the same person has to play mother and daughter, some changes are obviously necessary and easy to notice (e.g. different hair, different makeup, jewelry, etc). Some other things are so tiny they may not be instantly obvious to the average viewer, but they make such an important impact. You've paid attention to subtle differences in facial expressions, body language, posture etc to drive home the differences between Flor and Michi. You really do succeed at making us forget that it's the same actor playing both these roles. Fantastic work.
