Horses read animals emotions in most cases. In the case of equipment, horses feel engines or motors giving off vibration and frequency. In the case of most bicycles, they give off neither frequency or vibration, and horses do not like lifeless animals. They don't understand bicycles to the point of fearing them.

I usually stop, whistle, or call out to rider and ask if it's ok to pass. If they say yes, I get off my bicycle and walk by them slowly. Then I'll get back on and ride when I'm a good distance away from them. The rider seem appreciative when I don't spook their horse.

Also there's a slight downhill which means the cyclists may not have seen the horse until it was too late. The rider has a much better vantage point and one can argue more to lose. Like trying to get his horse back. The horse could've sustained life threatening injuries. The cyclist also of course.

A point I haven't seen mentioned yet is that it's much, much easier for equestrians to ride on the weeds than it is for the cyclists to do so. They don't need a smooth surface. The horses are fine walking off the road. It would have been so easy for that guy on horseback to have simply moved over maybe ten feet off the road on the other side, like the other equestrian at the very beginning. He wouldn't even need to stop. He could have kept riding, easily, at a safe distance from the pack of cyclists. There's also the point that he is just one person. The cyclists are a whole group. It makes more sense for one person to be slightly inconvenienced than for a whole group. It makes more sense for one person to yield than for a whole group to do so. Cyclists, especially road cyclists, need a reasonably smooth surface. They need the road surface or smooth track much more than the horses do.

This is why I hate group riders. I don't ride in a group. I ride alone, and I am constantly running into these groups. They love to take up both lanes because they are entitled. I don't care if you wait until I'm 50 yards away to tuck in - I'm not out there to play f***ing chicken. They ride fast and don't care about anyone else but them. As a solo rider I'm out there to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, and the occasional camaraderie of other solo riders when our paths cross. Please don't think all riders are like this.

Well, that will learn you. I hope the horse's rider is okay. Every trail I've been on gives right of way to horses and instructions to be cautious with horses because they might spook. Seems if you have the time to let your bike ride you down a hill, you could try dismounting as suggested by state/federal parks. Just a thought. Edit: Oops, my bad...it was actually the horse that rode him down the hill.

When I ride my mountain bike on the trail I always stop for Mr. Ed, until the person on top says go ahead. Then I always ride on the Cliffside in case the horse does spook - in that case The horse will run uphill, and not off the cliff. Common horse sense.

Equestrians always have the right of way. The way it goes on trails is; Equestrians, Hikers, then Bikers. Hikers yield to equestrians, bikers yield to everyone. The clip is so short it hard to tell but I can almost guarantee that the horse got spooked.

As a biker, I know better than to ride by a horse. You stop, dismount and wait for the horses to go by so they don't get spooked. This group are a bunch of ding dongs who needed to see what happens when you don't stop/ yield to horses on a trail. Smh. That being said, that horse rider put himself and his horse in harm's way by not going to the far right. Something has to give. Unfortunately, they both learned that horses will let you know when you've messed up.

There's more going on here than what meets the eye at first. I've replayed it several times. There is another cyclist down the hill, off the road. When the horse runs off, you can see the cyclist ahead of the horse. That cyclist must have had some kind of close call with the horse prior to the cyclist who fell. And it looks as if there are two other cyclists ahead of the main pack or peloton, who had already passed the horse. My guess is that the lady who fell was not a highly experienced rider, and got crowded by others, and forced into the horse. She tried to veer off around the horse, but didn't time it well.

I'm with you there, as if we didn't invest mountain biking to avoid accidents like these. I chose the dirt because there's no people or cars to worry about, but apparently we're still an asshole cyclist if we happen to encounter horses on a ride. I've ridden past groups of people riding horses like this on the Erie canal, never once in my life experienced something like that. The fact that so many are quick to blame the cyclists for a split second situation is mind boggling. Makes me glad I always wear a camera on my rides.

This is why I don't think horses should be on bike trails. Many of those horse owners don't cleanup the trail and it's dangerous for the horse because not all horses are comfortable around bikes and get spooked easily. Not fair to the horse or bikers.

I have 2 opinions on this: I have some experience with horses, so I’m aware of how skittish they can be. Almost as bad as deer, if not worse. On the same token, bicyclists are almost always the kind of people to assume other people will yield for them. Even if that person is another bicyclist.
