Great video, I'm glad those hope now in the Cybersecurity (ransomware side) realm of things! One comment about being vulnerable, just because there is a big company out there doesn't mean they are more or less protected than an individual. That company has to invest in cyber-defense. In the case of the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in the US, they did not have a full cybersecurity staff to put procedures in place and monitor threats. So part of the problem was on them.

I worked at a small company that had a ransomware attack back about 4 or 5 years ago maybe.. It just so happened I woke up in the middle of the night and was getting email alerts from a database server. Logged in to my work machine and was able to stop the program on some of the servers. It was a hassle, but our databases were safe and half of our backups were saved because I caught it in time. Pesky buggers. There's probably a decrypter available now, but I don't even remember what the attacking program was called. I just know it came from a Word document with a VB script.

If you play with vipers rather than avoiding them . . . . These videos have made me more diligent about keeping an external backup drive plugged in (but powered down) that I backup to with Acronis. But I don't have much that's extremely important that's not backed up a dozen times. But it would be inconvenient. . . . but how does ransomware know what to encrypt first? And how long does it take? If they disable the machine how will you be able to respond to their demands? I use to use Kaspersky but everyone was taking that it was not trustworthy when all the Russia bashing was going on. Now I use bitdefender and it quarantines rater than deletes which is what I prefer since I might have a crack program one here somewhere.

Saddly I got infected with .saba and it was the Online Key variant -_- I could restore some files however and it didn't get too deep into the files luckily. Also THE VERY FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO, WHEN YOU DISCOVER AN ATTACK: CUT YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION, reboot until windows offers pc repair options (Press Power button when windows boot logo appears and do this again when the pc boots back up). If you are lucky the malware will encrypt with offline keys, depending on the variant the decryption key has been known by the community for a while and you can easily decrypt. Cutting the Internet connection is also important because these Tools steal everything(!) and i mean ABSOLUTLY EVERYTHING(!) they can get, E-Mail Passwords, Steam Account, Origin, Epic Games, Facebook and so on. And if i hadn't checked my mails in this very moment i wouldn't have realized that. They plundered my Steam Wallet, they sold my stuff on community market and bought new stuff just to sell it immediatly, so all i had left was 0,01€... And steam guard even when activated didn't react. i got locked out from Origin and Epic as well but was able to at least recover Origin. Epic is on it. This shit software that hit me has been around since 2019 and got updated so it now encrypts with an online key, which is almost IMPOSSIBLE to decrypt... It uses 78 character encryption and you will take longer to decrypt than the univers exists... so much for that. but still keep your data backed up and maybe someday it will be encrypted. Also you have good chances that mp3 files, jpgs, mp4s can be decrypted because the Software only decrypts the first 150kb of the file. So the larger the file and the deeper the root directory the more chance is there that the data is not fully encrypted. So yeah in the last 8 hours i felt like i was having an exam on everything i ever learned since i got into computers. All that knowledge however is useless if you don't react fast. Change Passwords best is if you have a seperate device with 2way authentification or fingerprints, so you can practicly see live how they try to get control over your accounts. In a best case scenario you lose 10-15% data and have to reinstall a couple programs, worst case: They steal everything and hack you, your data and decrypt all of it... Be careful you guys. I don't even know how this happened. All i did during that was that i connected my new Microphone Shure SM7B via my usb interface/mixer from Behringer. And suddendly my pc started doing weird stuff... It rebooted, got back, after a minute it rebooted again. and then i got pop ups. SHIT! FUUUUCK! i disconnected the power sat down, googled what i could do, got into windows repair options, pc booted removed the virus. ok... so yeah then i thought just got lucky and away with it. Far from it... when i checked my files they were encrypted and that was when the real trouble began... So now I'm sitting here exhausted from 8 hours of fighting some fucking script kiddies from Russia/China or whatever and just am happy that i could restore and reacted fast enough...

Curious, this makes me think. How is it possible that you can decryp ransomware? I though encryption was almost decryp proof? It's like ransomware in general have bad encryption techniques, but good once is nothing new nor hard to create. Whats up with that?

It's very easy to make a mistake in the encryption that allows for easy decryption. An example would be using a bad random number generator, or not seeding it. In that case, there would only be a handful of possible keys, making it easy to guess. Another example was red petya, where they had an encrypted sector with known-plaintext that was used for checking the key, but with that sector it was easy to guess the key.
