hi..i would like to ask one question i cant find answer anywhere..when hedge fund bought shares through prime broker..is it registered under the hedge fund names or street names..retail traders like me using discount online broker like robinhood or interactive brokers bought shares that are registered under street names

Once the settlement process is complete, the custodial records reflect ownership by the hedge fund. If the hedge fund has more than $100mn in assets under management (AUM), then by law they must publicly disclose the ownership of shares that they own as of the last day of a quarter.

If a hedge fund like Carl Ican buys a large stake in a company then they can have material voting rights and even join the board (like he did with eBay, in order to unlock shareholder value).
