Thank you very much! I'm very glad I didn't rush out there to yank a cabbage in the dark. I'm so very hungry, and I can tell I really need some veggies. I wouldn't have been able to tell the details of protective head leaves in the dark, and I wish just twisted the head out, losing any chances if baby cabbage heads! Questions: can I get baby cabbage heads with red cabbage? Can red cabbage take more then 100 days to be perfectly ripe? Should i stop watering at a certain point for better flavor?

HA! THANK YOU! Full education and exactly what I needed to know. By some miracle I ended up on an 1883 remote homestead farm/cattle ranch unworked for decades. Powder River County, Montana. Did a modest late garden on arrival last year and wow! So trying what I can THIS year. Landlord gave me 4 bedding cabbage I thought were lettuce. I really have no clue; thought maybe cauliflower? Nope. Cabbage. WHATEVER it looks ready to go and now I can tell. Goal was pumpkins as nobody grows them around here and none around Halloween (too expensive to ship here). But made tactical error in seed planting too early methinks ... vines are taking over, plants exploding and think I'll have a load of pumpkins in mid August. Oops.

The best time to harvest is when the cabbage is firm. Usually 90 to 120 days after planting.

I have been using row cover. The first sign of those pesky cabbage moths flitting around . 👍

I use a pesticide called sevin. no more worm in the cabbage

Weird thing is we have this cabbage that has not balled at all. It's 1.5 years old and now it's forming a head. I didn't even know cabbage could live that long.
