My soil temperature is 74 right now here in Kansas. Last week it was at 72 so I through some seed down in some bare spots in my lawn. Next week regardless of what the temperatures is I plan on doing my entire yard with overseeding.

Great advice in this video. I've had a few "hit or miss" years with over seeding. One big lesson I've learned is that if you have a lot of trees around it's best NOT to wait until mid to late October. The sweet spot in my lawn is around the second to third week in September.

I'll definitely be waiting another couple of weeks myself. Warming back up into the 90s and dropping down to mid-80s, but ZERO rain in the 10 day forecast. Deciding whether I'm going to aerate/dethatch myself or hire someone. A bit short on time these days with all these little kids running around.

I right with you here in SE KS. I got all the dead grass up with detaching (SunJoe) Works fine just have to keep the cooling air vent blown out after a few passes or the motor will over heat or burn up. I lowered my mower and bagged as much as I could then got my back pack blower out and cleaned the rest of it out. It looks like we are going to get up to 97 or so for the next few days! It's crazy! I knew my yard was bad but didn't really know how bad it was. I didn't do any over seeding last year so I didn't clean it out. We have been in a few years of drought he and this summer was the same but I have to over seed or just let the weeds take over. No to weeds they are of the devil! LOL Well really they are of the curse but Gal 3:13 thank you Jesus

The spreaders are a great investment. My only wish is that I bought maybe a 36" wide one. I do 15k+ of lawn and a bigger one would really cut down on time.

I was on the fence about getting a peat moss spreader, but your last video helped me talk myself into it, lol .. I looked all around Wake Forest last year trying to rent one but couldn't find anyone who does. Im actually going to try topdressing with compost this year. Less mess, cheaper, and it helps condition the soil from many accounts. It's the way I did it for years when i lived in Pittsburgh, and it worked great! Depends on where you get it, I guess. I've seen it priced at $25/yard at Capital Mulch in Raleigh, and it's "certified" which hopefully means the weeds are cooked out. Have you bought any good compost anywhere in the area previously? Mulch Masters on Durant rd is like $45/yard. Sorry about the ramble. Love your videos, thanks for doing them!

Another thing to consider with overseeding is you want to do it 4-6 weeks before the first frost in your area which can be a guessing game

Good video! But I was wondering what about POA? I am going to spray prodiamine. I don’t overseed in fall I do it in the spring so I can hopefully stop the POA from germinating. I might of missed a video explaining why you are overseeding in the fall and not spring. Anyway, I was just wondering. Have a good weekend
@MrFergusonLawn2 ай бұрын
@@TheMarialm66 Fall is the absolute prime time for fescue. It gives the grass roots way more time to dig deep. Spring seeding has much less time, and many lose their seed from planting in spring. Roots just dont have time before summer comes.

Got a Vevor compost spreader last year. I saw absolutely zero reason to spend more money on one than I had to. I'll probably overseed some thin/bare areas in mid September. In my area doing it this early is a high chance for failure.

You look just about ready- Question: last year was first year using a dethatcher/scarifier. I had it cut low. Any tips on how low I set tines for dethatch? I felt like too high and it would just grab existing grass. I had a lot of dead to pull up but it seemed like I definitely pulled up more green than the dramatic videos where they pull a pile of just brown out of the lawn. It probably doesn’t matter in the end - it all helps, but thought I’d see if you had a tip.
@MrFergusonLawn2 ай бұрын
I just eye ball it. Like you said, if you don't go low enough, you won't hit the ground, so you want to mow down pretty low but not "kill the fescue" low. I choose to just hit it with a rake in areas that are isolated, but yea, just do your best to remove it one way or another.
