Ready to talk about top down burns? We are at the Chimney Safety Institute of America. Make sure that you've got your firewood ready, and that it's seasoned. Then follow the steps that veteran CSIA Instructor Bob Fish has. The type of fireplace doesn't matter. A top down approach, instead of log cabin style, should work very well.
The burn efficiency means less creosote in the chimney, long term. Make sure that before you use your fireplace or wood stove, that you know the shape it's in. That's where a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep can come in handy. You can find a professional in your zip code by using the search engine locator on our website, csia.org/search.

We use a top down method as well. You can tell that is some nice dry wood by the sound of it. Taking the time before lighting and getting things setup right such as nice fine dry kindling really makes a big difference. Well worth the effort. Thanks for sharing!

It does appear to be cleaner. If it is it should produce less CO as well.

1:33 That's the smokiest "so-called-effiecient" burn I've ever seen. Burn like that in my town and you will be inspected.

This is only realistic if your wood is super dry. Otherwise, prepare to spend 10 minutes refueling it with kindling from the bottom. The reality is, most people don't store their wood correctly even when they know it isn't stored correctly (myself included). I'm sure this works great in a school setting where you have 10 students doing all the work(cutting, stacking, covering) but at home, not so much. So, I prefer some smaller stuff on the bottom first. Perhaps I am missing the point though as it sounds like you are talking about long term affects on the inside of your chimney as well.

I think you’re right, when outdoors especially if wet, you need to capitalise on the the heat from the kindling to dry the bigger stuff

You are missing the point. No being rude, but the whole purpose of this is to burn off the creosote. When the wood heats up it releases creosote. ESPECIALLY if you are not storing your wood properly or burning green, high moisture wood. At very least you should bring your wood inside 24 hours before burning it. This will allow the wood to warm up, and steal less BTU’s from your fire, and you.

@@goodrabbi7176 keep a firewood ring inside near the fireplace or wood stove so the stove itself helps dry off the wood. also nice to be able to pick and choose when to go outside and get more wood rather than just having to do it because the fire is getting low
