Big Jim Hamilton is a great communicator, either interviewing folk in the rugby fraternity, or summarising, or just giving opinions on the sport. Appreciated!

We’ve had some great 10’s at Racing, Finn included, but Mehrtens’s boot back in 08/09 during the club’s promotion to the top flight and consolidating its position there was pivotal to where Racing are today.

It still hacks me off that the SRU allow our best players to play abroad and still get picked for the national team. None of the good other teams do it (not counting SA), total lack of ambition.
@MrArronMc3 жыл бұрын
With only two professional teams in Scotland, how do you expect our players to develop if not to move abroad?
@tattyheid72793 жыл бұрын
@@MrArronMc Maybe they should have more than just two teams? If the postponed France match was to be played next week instead we would have lost 10 players who don't play for those two teams. Also - during those down weeks when players leave the international squad to go and play for their 'foreign' teams what happens if they get injured (just like Finn did when playing for Racing - and missed the Sco-Fra match the next week). If Ireland and Wales can manage then we should be able to as well.
@MrArronMc3 жыл бұрын
@@tattyheid7279 The SRU initially started with four professional clubs, there was not enough fan support, and money was disappearing fast. Thesefourfour teams had to be merged into 2 Glasgow and Edinburgh. In 2002 the SRU attempted to bring in a third team again, and again ran out of money and had to disband the 3rd team in 2007. In 2017 SRU were favourites to buy Worcester Warriors, which didn't work out due to the personal feelings of the board of WW. The SRU know they need more professional teams but simply put, the evidence is there is not enough support at the club level. Until there is I'd much rater see our players go and play in better leagues with better coaching teams and access to, well better everything. Take Finn (since you used him in your example) at R92, R92 effectively have unlimited money, they have the best training campuses, best medical care etc, I'd much rather see Finn there than in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

@@chrisr3553 You wanting a critical paragraph?
@jlm44554 жыл бұрын
@@PS3bioboosterguyver it is wrong though and completely ignores context. Owen Farrell has sat behind big packs that give him front foot ball almost like clockwork. On rare occasions he doesn't have that huge advantage? He is downright rubbish. Russell by contrast especially at test match level has rarely been behind a pack giving him front foot ball, yet despite that? Has still kept Scotland in with a chance to win in just about every game recently he has played in. Where was Farrell's creativity when things got tough in WC final or v France in 6N? Yet again by contrast in a game Scottish forwards were being destroyed, down 31- to nothing? Russell orchestrated the greatest comeback in 6N history. He did it with Nick Grigg and Byron McGuigan in his backline. I've seen Sexton, Biggar and Farrell fall to pieces when their pack is going backwards. I cannot remember last time I saw that happen to Russell. Even when he makes a mistake? He has the guts and skill to still create. When was the last time Owen Farrell broke a line and offloaded, slipped through a brilliant grubber, made a gob smacking pass to open up a defense or made an angled kick that landed right in attackers' hands for an easy try? Russell does that in pretty much every game he plays. When you endlessly kick and ship the ball sideways then rush to call it "good game management" because he is a decent goalkicker? You miss the fact the total lack of creativity is a direct detriment to skill player like Watson, Slade, Nowell, Manu & others. Not to mention a rash tackling technique that finally caught up to him last season. Boks are big and physical. The 2009 Lions team didn't make that series competitive until they got out of the phonebooth. A phonebooth that was basically kick tennis to the designated are where forwards could beat the crap out of each other. Lions had success and nearly won that series by getting outside Boks' front 5. Making them run a whole bunch. That wore Boks down and opened up gap all over the field. Having a static 10 who kicks all the time? Is not going to accomplish that. Plus when you play to win by keeping it tight? It only takes one moment to ruin everything. Lions can play great physical rugby for 78 minutes be winning 15 to 9 and ....Cheslin Kolbe gets ball in space and ruins the plan. Also opinions are indeed frequent, as are arseholes who cling to dogmatic narratives. Last two times Russell and Farrell have met? Farrell tossed two intercept tries and a blocked kick for another try.
